SMS SZENT ISTVAN (ST STEPHEN) IN 1:350 BY TRUMPETER.
« on: December 24, 2021, 01:02:01 PM »
Started this a couple of weeks ago although it was waterlined at the same time as SMS Viribus Unitis.
First a bit about the ship. She was built in Fiume unlike the first three in the clas that were built in Trieste, this was for political reasons.
Probably because of the different ship-yard, the were visible differences between her and the other ships in the class.
No torpedoe nets were ever fitted.
A large searchlight plat form was fitted that extended from the wheelhous roof to the middle of the after funnel.
                     The bridge wings were omitted.
                      The funnels were noticeably taller.
There was a large ventilator trunk fitted aft in place of the smaller one fitted to the other ships in the class.

        And now to the kit.
Trumpeter have provided etche brass torpedoe net shelves which are replicated in the Eduard aftermarket set. All the bumps and
holes neede to fit the net booms are there which will have to be removed.
The searchlight platform is in the kit in plastic, there is an etched brass support structure in etched brass.
                       No bridge wings.
The funnels are too short. I've include a couple of computer generated pictures created from original plans to show the
differences. The first one is SMS Viribus Unitis, the second, SMS Szent Istvan.
                       The velntilator is included.
The pictures probably speak for themselves.
Haddock.

So you have a few modifications to do to the model then Mr Haddock. We can check the differences when you display the models together.

And so to the build.
The bridge structure and the funnel casing are moulded seperately, I'm hoping to build this part of the superstructure
as one assembly so I've joined 'em together.
The funnels have been lenghtened. Comparing the two computer generated pictures, 5mm seems about right,
in 1:350, 5mm =1.75m. (Thanks for the Balsa Zak.) 'Addock 'oles" added for the funnel stays.
As usual, some of Trumpeter's brass is too long, I'm expecting it now so I check early in the build to avoid some
very strong nautical language. You can see the bits of micro-strip needed to accomodate the extra length.
There's a latice frame work that represents support for the searchlight platform, Trumpy would have you twist
the gussets by 90 degrees then bend up to meet the framework, most of 'em just fell off so I removed 'em all and fixed
them seperately.
Dry itting shows that the various platforms need fettling to look level when assembled, the lower part of the mast is
too long so needs one of the locating spigots removed,  shortened by a suitable amount, then the spigot replaced, shims added where needed.
A dry fit shows, hopefully, when all is glued together it should look passable, it looks a bit wonkey on the picture, time will tell.
As usual, the pictures should speak for themselves.
Haddock.

Just a few bits and bobs to add to the bridge and funnel are then it should be safe to fix the assembly in position.

Bridge and funnels now in position, few more bits and bobs added.

I'm trying to sus out a rigging plan, I thought it would be easy after doing
it's sister ship but I seem to be making heavy weather of it. There are at
least twenty pieces of standing rigging fitted to the deck, biggest problem
is all the signal haliyards, making sure they don't collide with the other stuff
is proving to be a bit problematic.
                           Haddock.
