I have been painting some 8th Army soldiers as well.
The ruler is to give you an idea of the size - 28mm believe it or not!

The sculpting on that Bren gunner is excellent, he really looks like he's pilling it tight into his shoulder.

How many parts do each figure have?

The figures are white metal for the machine gun and mortar crew, they are one piece, the plastic ones have 5 or 6 pieces. The machine gun is two parts white metal and so is the mortar.

Here are the next two additions to the 8th Army.
25pdr Light Artillery gun with 3 crew.
6pdr Antitank gun and 3 crew.
