V2 launch site
« on: September 17, 2020, 05:25:12 PM »
Whilst visiting recently a friend of mine heard me mention that I had the EMW A9 rocket and was going to build the meillerwagen for it to sit on and kindly he bought me one!!! This is the Revell 1/72 re-boxing of the CMK kit which includes the Hanomag SS-100 Gigant tractor, meillerwagen transport and launch trailer, plus the launch pad and it's trailer. There are 243 parts, including one sprue of clear parts and a 36 page instruction book(let). So whilst I was waiting for the filler to set on the A9 I made a start on the meillerwagen.
I had already bought this kit so will be able to use the other Gigant and meillerwagen, along with a V2 and launch platform, in a diorama which won't be as big as Zak's but hopefully as interesting. There were lots of ejector pinholes to fill and pins to remove,  plus the cabinet towards the front of the trailer doesn't have a back so I had to make one. I've started painting using Tamiya Desert Yellow to give a variance to the large amount of Dunklegelb I'll be using.

Yes Chris there are lots of small parts!!! Alongside the Abschussplattform and trailer seen in the EMW A9 post I continued with the Meillerwagen painting the main body Model Air 71.017 RLM 80 Olivgrun (Russian Green). The launch tower/bed is just laid in place at the moment as I will have to make adjustments to the travel clamps to enable the A9 to sit on it.
In between all this the parts for the SS-100 were painted mostly in Model Air 71.056 Dunkelgrau, which is labelled as Panzer Dark Grey and does look to me as a more darker shade than usual. But hey this is 1946!!!

Abschussplattform finished and fitted to the trailer. Hanomag started and there are lots of little parts with very small attachment points so it's been a long haul. I think I now know how Haddock feels when making his ships!!! I deviated from the instructions when fitting the drive shaft and rear axle to get an easier fit only to find later in the instructions that you have to thread the exhaust and silencer around the axle. So next time that's going in first! The windows were a challenging fit and I used Glue and Glaze but that didn't hold one of the rear ones in place so I had to take the roof roof off and re-glue. I have a feeling that weathering is going to hide a multitude of sins with this!

Gigant finished and weathered, I left the rear view mirrors and headlights off until after the weathering. Today it was modelling on the patio cutting, sanding and fitting the rungs to the side of the Meillerwagen and used superglue as they're so fine. The locating holes weren't very deep so I drilled them out a little bit. Not up to Haddock's standard but I'm working on it.

The launch support was fiddly even on the 1/35 ones, so yours will be even worse to do.
