1/350 Ships

I moved on from the 1/700 models of the Graf Spee to one a bit larger.
It is almost complete.
Anyway here are a few pictures.

I changed the title as I will be building at least a couple more in this scale.
I bought the ICM SMS Markgraf at Southwell show, the kit and the White Ensign fret were only £17.
I also picked up the HMS Lord Nelson for £38.
I will not post any of the build as I shall be following Tony's build of the Nelson closely.

I have not been very happy with my deck colour and so here are my experimentation so far.
The colour is bleached bone with different washes applied.

I think in general the colours used are too brown.

Tricky, and the small scale will not warrant a very strong colour I guess.

Hi Zak,
I know how difficult and subjective the subject of colour is.
I know you will find that 'colour' with a bit of trial and error.

Just remember Zak -- YOU ARE CORRECT WHATEVER COLOUR YOU CHOOSE (within bounds) -- and the rivet counters are NOT.
Its all subjective and colour at sea changes so much with lots of different things.

My colour usually ends up a little green around the gills.

             Wood decks can drive you nuts. The Navy used to scrub the decks with  mix of bleach and pumice,
so the wood was very light. Teak weathers out to a light grey with a touch of brown/tan to it but turns quite dark when wet.
             The best results I've had are a mix of Tamiya deck tan and Sky grey, then a sludge wash of any dark colour, Flory washes work quite well.
             It depends how nicely the planks are moulded so you need to persevere with the wash to leave just the seams picked out.
             I'm never satisfied but Seydlitz is the nearest I've got to the effect I'm after.

Sorry haddock, I can't help the speed with which I model.
Here is the SMS Markgraf, a WW1 battleship.
Not sure about the rolled up anti-torpedo/submarine net, it is some thin string, painted and so on.

For the net I got some very fine tutu netting from Boyes, its OK, not as good as using etch brass but OK with me.

I've seen round shoelaces used painted a dark metallic colour, looks quite effective.
