Rorke's Drift - Zulu War 1879
« on: September 08, 2018, 01:30:05 PM »
After the samurai figures decided to do some Zulu War figures at Rorke's Drift, yet again a couple of boxes of reduced figures from Monksbar in York.
They are 1/32 scale before you ask Zak - and you get 16 in each box ( now is the time that Zak says "I think I have them in the loft and before I get any done he has them finished - but heyho its only for FUN ) so lots to play around with and change the positions.
The second photo is the card test model of the building in the background when I am happy with the size will make it in MDF and coat with filler. the last photo is a start made on changing some of the soldiers who are standing upright with Martini Henry  slung on the back into dead figures.

Some of the figures have FULL backpacks on so removed this on the figure on the left other still to have his removed.
Also cleaned up the zulu shields and primed ,-- next job to look at the shield colours for the warriors at Rorkes Drift - I think most had red marks on the shields due to them being younger unmarried warriors

A start made on blocking in colour on jacket and trousers for the troops and basic skin colour for the zulus.
Having carved off the backpack on the 2 troopers will have to replace belts etc with  thin metal.  The shields have also had some colour put on them.

Quick work, no I do not have any from the Zulu Wars.
How do you cope with paint adhering to polythene?

Talking about hardships, just finished painting the strengthening strips of hide in the shields.

Sorry Zak - was going to say but slipped my mind ( or what is left of it )  Just washed in soapy water and a primer "autotek" from Boyes. Paint seems OK at the moment.

Many years ago I had a large collection of white metal zulu war figures - a bit bigger than 1/72 from my recollection - which I set up on my own Rourkes Drift diorama.  I then proceeded to recreate the battle playing the part of the hill snipers with my air rifle.

The Zulu War by David Clammer is a good source of reference.  Low on pictures but has a very good section on the impis, shield colours, names and hierarchy.

I like the "ZULU -Isandlwana & Rorkes Drift" by Ian Knight with colour plates by Michael Chappell and Angus McBride, and the osprey books are always good.
Some work done on the front and sides of the building, next job is to fasten them down in the slots cut into the base and then cover with plaster of paris.

You mean like a Piccaso picture of a face it doesn't look like a face ??? hohoho or am I getting a bit deep with this ??????
Forgot to put this photo with the other 2 - it shows for Wizzel how the base has been cut to give more strength to the building. Before he asks it was done with a plough plane and cleaned up with a small very very sharp chisel.

All parts of the building glued and pinned into place. The second photo shows the first coat of plaster on the walls.

A start made on the biscuit crates. Produced on the comp and then wrapped round a bit of foam -- as you can see from the top row 5 from the left it is coming apart so needs some more glue or time to dry ( must stop rushing projects)
