He's going to really annoy us now by showing us these re-engineered bits complete and in place without telling us what or why!  I too am intrigued!

Keep doing a bit whilst stuff is drying on "Big Lizzy". The detail on this thing is amazing but some of the fits are a bit "iffy", nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of brute force and ignorance.
If left to it's own devices, the mast would be considerably out of plumb.
        Not water-lined yet.
Haddock.

It's good, proper modellers that can make a badly fitting kit fit good.  I'm still in the discipline of making good fitting kits fit badly!  It'll be a long while before I'm ready to tackle etched brass on the scale you do but I'm taking it all in so when the time comes I'll know what to do!

I think that is why I scratch build.
I get really frustrated when kits don't fit and you have to do lots of work.
Why are we paying good money for a kit where the bits don't fit.
Do they ever test build them?

Now there is a question, perhaps our ex airfix members can answer that. If they do test build them are we to believe that they are satisfied with such (poor) quality?

The thing is, back in the Airfix heyday, we were more than happy with what we got - bad fit, 6" rivets an' all.  We're so used to complaining at a high level now that we're very difficult to please.  Most of the magazine reviews are focussed around what DOESN'T work in a kit and what the builder had to do to rectify it.  That's one reason I don't want to enter any competitions with my models.  I do them for my own enjoyment and begrudge spending 5-10 times the value of the model on after market corrections.

That said, looking at the Dornier, Blenheim and BP Defiant Bill brought to the meeting, Airfix have at last upped their game and look like a force to be reckoned with again.  Pity they have such a poor attitude to the likes of supporting make and takes - cos who's going to buy their excellent kits when we're all gone if they don't try to attract new blood!

Anyway, back to the Tsesarevich if you would please Haddock...

Well just to carry on a bit, since Hornby took over the actual standard of the kits is excellent.
One problem I have is they present an old kit in a new box, so they are still bashing out some of their earlier kits and when you open the box its still a bit of a disappointment.
As far as accuracy goes, I find that with WW1 you can claim that they don't know any better than you. even some of the stuff presented in museums is not accurate. Bovington claimed they had a Mk 1 but it wasn't, so there we go.

Yes, agreed there with the old kit thing.  It's very difficult to spot the new toolings.  And keeping up with all the releases is no mean feat either.  I will be wanting one of them Dorniers though.

Water-lined. Hopefully now you can see the reasoning behind the re-engineering. It should help to maintain the shape of the hull and resist the effects of my rough handling.

Just bits and bobs whilst waiting for Big Lizzie's water to dry. Not much glued, just dry fitting and formulating a plan of attack. The fun starts when adding the etched brass and painting the sub-assy's starts. Then of course, there's brass top-masts to make and rigging to plan.I can't find any decent images for the rigging so I'll have to use artistic licence.
