Italeri 1/35U-Boot Biber
« on: April 14, 2013, 09:19:22 AM »
Having attended the Sword and Lance Model Show and having the model on display, here are the build details.

I decided that if I was to enter something into the maritime competition I had better try to build something.
The Biber was a one man submarime and was developed during the final stages of the second World War.
It was produced after the capture of Welman W-46 in Norway. The first prototype was developed in just 6 weeks. The sub was not very successful and suffered from many problems.

The first photograph shows the kit contents.

The parts look crisp and well moulded. The whole box and kit is nicely presented.

Channel 4 did a program called Salvage Squad and in one of the programmes they did renovate a Biber from the Submarine Museum, this was designated 105 and it is this particular sub that I will be building. 105 was recoverd with a dead operator on board – Carbon monoxide poisoning being the cause.
I can see from the kit instructions that the interior is only partially detailed; I will add one or two extra details, but will only include items that can be seen with the hatch open. A seat and basic dashboard are provided, this has an etched brass front, I will add switches and valves for blowing the tanks. I also added an extra gauge or two.

The ejector pin marks on the inside of the conning tower were removed and the area filled and sanded. The interior was painted white.
The panel was sprayed black and the controls and dials added and painted.
Construction went much as the instructions stated.

Part 2
No, even I cannot build this quickly it is a retrospective article.
A great deal of time was taken removing seam lines!!!!!!!
Then a weld seam appeared when painted as if by magic, see Tony B for details here.
The Hull comes in three sections as per the real thing.
Construction was straight forward.
two figures are also included with the kit.

I did construct a base from DAS modelling clay, balsa wood and other bits and pieces.
These pictures show the finished model.

Hi Zak, your build looks mighty impressive, it certainly 'ups the odds' in the maritime competition stakes!

Hi Dave,

I saw yours and thought " oh well another kit for Ebay, I know I won't be able to match yours"

It looked REALLY GOOD close up, nicely presented, and well made.

'Good on yer'

Bigkev
I hope my next is always better
