After the last build I thought I'd try something a little easier, hmmmm...... This is the 1976 Novo boxing of the original 1963 Frog issue. 41 parts in grey plastic plus a one piece clear canopy. The overall shape is correct apart from the tail and moving surfaces being a bit thick plus in front of the canopy being slightly low. Due to it's age there are lots of ejector pin holes and flash and strangely the seats are of differing shapes. There is no cockpit detail apart from the two floors and seats, so onwards and upwards......

Control panels, partition and rear bulk head made from plastic card, joysticks from fuse wire and seat belts from tape. Not 100% accurate but they help fill the huge gap.

Cockpit glazing fitted and masked. The wings are a really good fit considering the age of the kit with just a couple of swipes with a sanding block required to get the one piece lower wing to fit then the upper parts go on with the gap looking like a panel line.
As yellow is a notoriously difficult colour to paint during online research I came across a tip of using PINK as an undercoat so I thought I'd give it a go. The first photo shows the pink and an initial coat of yellow with the second photo showing the result after building the thin layers up. Not quite there yet but looking promising. Perhaps next time I wont use the 30 year old Airfix dayglo pink!!!

I generally use white as an undercoat for yellow.

On returning to the build after letting the paint dry it had turned a lovely shade of orange a la Japanese trainer a/c. So if you're wanting to paint your Yokosuka K5Y1/2 Willow etc. but don't have the colour then I suggest using Humbrol Matt Dayglo Pink 5058 followed by Vallejo ModelAir 71.002 Medium Yellow!!! To rectify the above I resprayed with Citadel Base Averland Sunset followed by the above ModelAir which looks ok to me. We live and learn but that's the joy(?) of modelling.

Hi Chris,
Looking good. I think the 'Dayglo Pink' might have been the cause of the orange hue. I have seen pink used elsewhere and it appears to work.
However I do have a 'Willow' to do in the stash, now I know how to get the correct finish, Ta!

Upper surfaces finished in Humbrol Dark Earth and Tamiya RAF Dark Green and a step sourced from spares. As anticipated the vintage 'transfers' shattered in the water so I had to turn to the spares box but unfortunately I don't have any Type B roundels of the correct size so I'll have to get a sheet. I looked at various photos before deciding to base the a/c on White 43, W8825, from 5 (P) AFU [Pilot Advance Flying Unit], based at RAF Tern Hill, having a good photo of this in my copy of Owen Thetford's 1962 edition of 'Aircraft of the Royal Air Force since 1918'.
Despite it's age this kit can be turned into a good looking model with a little TLC.
