Me P.1107/II
« on: April 01, 2021, 02:30:54 PM »
This is the 1/72nd scale RS Models kit of the Me P.1107 high speed, long range bomber. Whilst the box only says Me P. 1107 it is in fact of the P.1107/II (2). There are two sprues of softish bluey/grey plastic, one clear sprue and a decal sheet with four options, a further release will give four more.
In January 1945 a specification was issued for a fast jet bomber with a crew of our capable of carrying a 4000kg bomb load and a range of 7000km. Messerschmitt proposed the P.1107/1 which had the fuselage from the Me 264, swept wooden wings, four BMW or Heinkel turbojets slung under the wings and a T form tail. The design was later modified to the /II, subject of the kit, which would be of all metal construction and had the engines relocated to the wing roots and a V tail fitted. The prototype of this design was in the early stages of construction when the war ended.
From the instructions you'll see that detail in the cockpit is sparse so I busied it up with etch seat belts and various items from the spares box, with the bomb aiming sight being scratch built.

Now that looks good!
You've got to hand it to them, they weren't short on imagination!
It wouldn't be beyond belief today!

It only got as far as a partially constructed prototype but you can bet the Americans or Russians used some if not all of the technology, Project Paperclip etc.

Cockpit tub fitted and hopefully enough weight fitted to stop tail-sitting using a combination of Blue Tack, pellets, superglue and PVA glue. The clear part rear hatch with it's perspex panels was also fitted at this time. Having been left overnight to set the two fuselage halves were mated up with some sanding then PPP applied. The wing halves were joined with the starboard side going together comparitivly well but the port side need work on the jet exhausts to get a reasonable fit. These were then fitted to the fuselage with PPP helping the joint as were the cockpit canopy and nose glazing.

There were two more designs in the P.1107 series and one was a delta so almost a flying wing Chris.

The gap at the rear of the wing where it joins the fuselage was filled with a combination of PPP and superglue, with PPP being applied to other areas where needed. After masking the cockpit, nose and undertail hatch it was time to fit the undercarriage. And here was the problem that slowed me down. Now whether this was of my own making I'm not sure. If you look at the first photo you'll see that item 5b has the only ribs on the piece going downwards which means that when you get to Section 12, second photo, to fit the legs they're upside down even though the panel lines are showing coming from the top!!! This meant the gap between the axle and the wing was nowhere near big enough for the huge main wheels. Much MSea procrastination later I worked out the only to get the legs to fit was to open up the wheel bays and superglue the legs to the roof. Once set it was out with the Halfords primer to check for and remedy any problems then into the spray booth. The underside and fuselage sides were painted Xtracrylic RLM 76 followed by Lifecolor RLM 81 then Xtracrylic RLM 82. The turret housings, u/c doors and wheel bays were handpainted Humbrol RLM02.

Instructions, instructions. I've had them where part numbers were incorrect and having to guess that 15 meant 25; I'd already used part 15 and it was different.

Yes Chris I think the parts were numbered up wrong, should have known to check everything twice as RS models have caught me out before.
Another mistake I made with their kits was not thinning down the axles before fitting to the plane, which again caused fun but I got there in the end. The kit gives a choice of decals for KG30, KG51, KG54 and KG66, stated as 1946, I suppose it's to fit in with the Luft46 theme but as the plane wasn't due to enter service 'til 1948 I used some for an a/c from 3/KG27 'Boelcke' from the Xtradecal sheet X72248 for the Heinkel He 111 H-5, H-5y and H-6 which I have in my stash as this was one of the bomber units which wasn't converted to fighters late '44 early'45. The kit gives decals for fuel, oil, 'No step' and 'No lift/jack' but no indication of where to put them so it was a combination of logic and artistic license. A spray of Games Workshop Satin was followed by a Flory Wash of Grime.
Overall I'm pleased with the result but I think you'd need some experience with short run kits before attempting this kit.
