Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik
« on: August 22, 2020, 02:18:42 PM »
As my back is bad at the moment and not getting a lot of modelling done, decided to do the planning for the next model.
Get the smelling salts out for Kevin - its a plane, but don't get your hopes up.
It will be done well after the war and in either a Russian scrap yard or outdoor storage area at a museum.  John will be happy, lots of RUST on the central armoured section and faded paint on the aluminium wings and body, engine bay empty and pilots area damaged and full of rust - thats the plan at the moment.  If it ends up in a scrap yard will remove part of the wings so will have to sort out what the internal wing construction would look like - that should keep me happy and quiet for a few hours.

Ee tha does like trashing some great kits, lol!!! Looking forward to seeing the end result. Don't forget to drill out the pilot's console to make it look like the clocks have been salvage. A nice touch that

On the list alongside engine removal, port wing to be bent up, props to be bent backwards. most plexiglass removed and the 37mm gun and reward facing machine gun removed as well, was thinking about removing the pilots seat but think it would look better all rusted and messed about.

Cool project.
Don't forget the birds nest in the engine intakes...

Pilots seat ground out and the pilots console has been drilled out ( showing that Chris has been around nicking things ) second photo is the engine compartment  bulkhead and the last photo is some of the bits painted gloss black and overcoated with aluminium.

Thanks Chris - my philosophy is "why just make it out of the box when you can make lots and lots  of extra work for yourself"-- the other thing is that you can always tell one of my models from the rest on the table.

Yes, indeed, always make extra work.

It's funny how we modellers always seem to make extra work for ourselves. The number of times we say 'I'll build this OOB', then..........

Body, pilots area and prop fastened together.  Dark rust on the armoured tub and some aluminium on the rest of the body.

Bits of wire and bits and bobs out of the scrap box to add some interest to the empty engine bay - when dry will rust them all up.
