Modelling Projects / Messerschmitt Me262 in 1/144th
« on: June 17, 2019, 12:36:03 PM »
Hi All,

This is the Trumpeter Messerschmitt Me262 A-1 in 1/144 scale.

Wanted something that I hope could be a quickish project to get back into modelling, now I've re arranged the modelling bench back to a more usual ergonomic layout.

As you can see the parts are nicely moulded, with a good decal sheet, and two marking options.
The kit also has a Kettenkrad tractor to pose towing the finished article and is quite sweet and detailed in this small scale.
I've removed the fuselage, lower fuselage/wings, and gun bay doors (open and closed) and done a test fit, and it looks a good fit. Also I determined where I could put any ballast as there isn't a lot of room in the fuselage, so it looks like the engine cowlings might get filled with lead. The cockpit tub is a single piece and will only need some seat harnesses making from paper.

Anyway some pictures follow:-

Hi Everyone,

Whether you are a member of the club, or just one of our many 'guests', I would just like to wish each and everyone of you a Very Happy New Year, and all the Best for 2019!!

I hope that in 2019, we all move forward in our modelling experiences and learn from each other, and by the end of the year are better modellers, and more confident in the techniques and practices used, and for the really brave willing to post your 'latest' project here.

God Bless to All,

Cheers,

General Discussion / When its time to admit defeat......
« on: November 28, 2018, 08:06:46 AM »
Hi All,

I wonder how many of you have got to the point with a kit where you just have to admit defeat.
I retrieved from the loft an Italeri An-2 Colt in 1/72 which I started a while back but got side tracked .
I had great hopes of making this in Polish markings initially. Now I had retrieved it I thought well it needs a bit of work but, but I'm sure re-energized after Telford I could finish it, how wrong I was.

The canopy assembly was awful, even though I had carefully dipped the canopy in 'Kleer' and got a brilliant clear canopy, when it came to fixing the under canopy panels it became apparent all was not well, nothing fitted as it should, no matter how much trimming, adjusting I did. I looked for an after market replacement and found nothing. Still not deterred I assembled the rest of the airframe components where I could, again found that the joins, and mouldings were so poor when a dry run was attempted, the model would end up being more filler than kit. Eventually after quite a few hours of modelling time expended but getting nowhere I wanted to be, I decided to admit defeat, and chuck the model. It was so poor, that any further time to achieve any sort of result would be pointless, as it would not have given me the satisfaction as a finished article knowing there were so many flaws in it.
The only consolation is that the spares box now has a few more bits to be used and a set of decals as well.

Has anybody else had a similar experience...??

Modelling Projects / Revell Type VIID Submarine 1/350
« on: November 24, 2018, 03:10:23 PM »
Hi All,
Currently on with a Type VIID Minelaying submarine in 1/350.
This basically the VIIC that I built a while back, but on this one I am using etched brass to replace the railings and grab rails etc.
As you can see I am now at the painting stage, the etch brass causing me a few headaches along the way, especially the railing around the upper gun deck.
Taking advice from Haddock, I used an old drill bit to roll the railing into a curve but could not get the radius I wanted, so resorted to a small section of brass rod of narrower section and tried again, after several attempts got something like.
Have attached some photo's of my progress so far.

General Discussion / Masking Models
« on: June 09, 2018, 07:06:02 PM »
Hi All,
Just like to start this thread with the way I now use to mask large area's of a model before spraying.
It involves using food bags, the type you use to put your sandwiches in.
The area around the nacelle in this example has been masked with thin strips of Tamiya tape, then additional thicker strips are added until about 10mm around the area is covered and masked.
Now I use the food bags. They are very thin and easy to manipulate into position. They cover 90% of the airframe and you only need to tack down the openings of the bag to make an effective seal from paint spray.
Before I used to use paper and masking tape to cover the airframe, this way it is easier and quicker to do.
The same process can be used for tanks, ships, large figures, etc.
A few pictures of my model using this method follow.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Modelling Projects / Zvezda 'Topol' SS-25 Sickle ICBM
« on: March 22, 2018, 07:52:46 AM »
Hi All,
Well this is my first foray into the Missile SIG build.
I have chosen the 'Topol' Zvezda SS-25 Sickle ICBM in 1/72 as it always looked powerful and menacing on those Russian victory day parade pictures.
Still unsure whether to build it in transport mode, or launch position.
Some pictures of the build will follow, but for now here are a few pictures of the box art and instructions.
Cheers,

Modelling Projects / English Electric Lightning 1/72
« on: March 21, 2018, 07:53:54 PM »
Hi All,
Not posted for a while, but have been keeping my hand in behind the scenes as it were.
I have just embarked upon building some models of the EE Lightning. My aim is to cover at least all of the production marks of the Lightning.
My first model is a an Lightning F.2A from Airfix. The model is built from the box, with the exception of the ejector seat which is a Barracuda Resin example. Model is finished as an aircraft of 92 Squadron, based at Gutersloh, Germany.
No build pictures this time, just the finished article, which I hope you like.
Cheers,

Hi All,

Well whilst I was on with the Mirage Type IXc Submarine, I also began in the background this model.
Pen Pusher kindly gave me this model to build, as it had a bit more etch to practice on compared to the Mirage offering.
The model generally is well moulded in pale grey plastic of a short run nature and some detail is a little soft, however the etch is really good and fine and includes a full deck as well as railings, ariel's, cable cutters, antenna's.
On this build I have placed some plasticine and lead weights inside the hull to give a sense of weight to the model. Also I created a base from some of the parts provided, and some scratchbuilt supports.
Anyway a few pictures follow of the model so far from start to finish.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Hi All,
Well, now I've put my toe in the water (pardon, the pun) with a submarine, I'm now starting my next project. Yes, it's another submarine but a later model and this time by Mirage Hobby. However this one has a some etched brass to improve the detail, and a learning curve for me.
The model is moulded on two sprue's in a softest mid grey plastic, one small etched brass sheet, and a small decal sheet.
So far I have completed the stand, which will assist in handling. The main hull and deck sections.  I Also but not shown the conning tower.
Generally, the fit is good, but there are some sink marks and alignment issues at the stern and bow. For now I have used a mix of tube and Tamiya Extra Thin cement to glue it together. I also used some Berna clamps and some Tamiya Tape to hold everything in place whilst it dries.
With the stand, although it locates into the hull okay, it is not a firm positive hold, so I will drill some holes in the stand parts to add some brass, which can then be located into appropriate holes in the hull bottom.
Some pictures of the model and progress as noted follow.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Modelling Projects / Revell VIIc U-Boat 1/350
« on: January 22, 2017, 06:07:00 PM »
Hi All,

Well I've taken a turn to the 'Dark Side' in having a go at building this Revell VIIc U-Boat in 1/350th.

The kit is quite simple, but is very well detailed in respects of the hull and deck areas. However, due to moulding limitations the railings on the deck and around the gun emplacement on the 'sail' are a trifle heavy. whether I attempt to replace these later in the build I'll have to see. My main aim is to put a toe into the water with a ship/submarine of this scale without etched brass, construct it, paint it,  to gain confidence in this genre'.
I do have another kit with a small amount of etch as my next ship project, if all goes well with this one.

I have made a start on the hull, the deck is not glued in place yet. I still need to fill in a few small sprue attachment areas that need attention (with Green Stuff).

Some pictures follow of the kit contents and work done so far.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Modelling Projects / DHC-1 Chipmunk 1/48th Aeroclub
« on: November 14, 2016, 11:03:39 AM »
Hi All,
Well I've not posted anything for a while.
However, have been doing a little and this is just finished. It is a DHC-1 Chipmunk in 1/48th.
Kit is a short run kit by John Adams of Aeroclub. Had this model a while half finished so had to be done.
Happy with result, straight from box except replacement roundels/fin flashes, and some lead foil seat belts.
Some pictures follow:-
