General Discussion / Re: JUST KITS - MY EXPERIENCE
« on: March 19, 2013, 10:56:17 PM »
Thanks for the info Kev.  1/144 is starting to interest me, particularly for the bigger aircraft.  After seeing the SIG at our show, I was very impressed with what can be made of them.

I will dabble a little more in them soon - and I will get to Croppers soon too.

I shall look up Sweet to check out their range.

I wouldn't say I'm "into" them (yet) Andy - this is for a specific project - but that said, I was quite taken by the display the SIG put up at our show.  I may well venture a little further into this field yet...

Modelling Projects / Re: In my shed

By the gracious will of DCOS (see the April newsletter - out soon), I have been allowed a small corner of what was the spare bedroom and is now the "hobbies" room.  In that corner, I have crammed my Marshall JCM800 bass amplifier and 4 x 12 cabinet, 3 guitars which are hung on the wall, an offcut of kitchen worktop, a ply backboard and some shelves on which sit my modelling tools, paints etc.  I have also been permitted partial space on the craft book shelf unit for my little music system.

I am a big radio fan so more often than not, when I sit down to model, I turn Radio 4 on and let whatever is playing just wash over me.  I tend to find that when I am in "model mode" I am concentrating on it fairly intently so that all background noise is just out of range.  Radio 4 often fits that bill as there can be some very dry subjects on there so while it's comforting to have some voices in the background, it's nice not to have to actively listen and respond to them.

If I put music on, it can be a mixture of anything from Mozart to Motorhead, but never anything I am learning the bass line to, or I start bopping away and the frames on my canopy become a little inaccurate!  I have found the best combination of talking and music is Desert Island Discs, so with over 500 episodes of that on my ipod, that can also fill in some of those long hours trying not to sniff glue.

General Discussion / JUST KITS - MY EXPERIENCE
« on: March 19, 2013, 09:30:46 AM »
I am currently after a particular aircraft in a specific scale (a 1/144 scale Hawker Hurricane) for my latest madcap project and, as I like to support the high street, thought I would go 'physical' shopping.  Modelzone and Hobbycraft (who previously did stock these) in Hull were not able to provide, so yesterday, I rang Just Kits on Hessle Road.

After asking if he had such a kit in stock, I was told he hadn't and, almost disdainfully, he said that such things probably didn't exist as it was a most unusual scale.  I explained about the 1/144 SIG and the Revell Micro Wings range and he checked his catalogue as he is a big stockist of Revell, confirmed that such things were available but it was most unlikely that he would be able/willing to get one in as a one off.  More likely it would have to be a rackful, which I got the impression he didn't fancy being stuck with.

The conversation ended with me feeling that rather than being a potential customer, I had been a bit of a nuisance by wanting a bit of an obscure, yet readily available kit which only cost a few quid; this by the tone of voice in which the conversation was delivered and the almost offhand way I was dismissed.  That, I though, is the end of that!

Ten minutes later, the telephone rang and a voice on the other end asked if I was "the bloke who had just called about the 1/144 scale Hurricane?"  To his credit, he had followed my enquiry up with his supplier who did indeed have this range in stock and could put 1 x 04913 on the next order, due to him in a few days and he would hold it for me to collect on Saturday.

Well done Just Kits.  It just goes to show that whilst an improvement on texts and letters, phone conversations can also be misread without the animated facial expressions that go with them.  I wonder what sort of face he will pull when I collect the kit on Saturday and ask him if he would consider giving us at the club a discount - don't think I'll be so cruel as to ask for it on the Hurricane though.  That might be pushing me PULHHEEMS a bit!!!

Good Luck?  That sounds a bit ominous!  But thanks anyway, laugh out loud.

Matthew,

The BV 222.  I'll have it!  I've nothing to swap it for from your list so it'll have to be cold hard cash I'm afraid if that's agreeable?

We can discuss this further if you wish - unclewizzel@hotmail.com

General Discussion / Re: old style model shop
« on: March 05, 2013, 06:35:33 PM »
It's another "yearning for yesteryear" moment I'm afraid.  I think back to all the dusty old places I used to visit - both local and newly discovered gems when on holiday - and choke back a tear.  Not just models either and it's sad to say that as well as the displays and stock, the service has also declined.  As you pointed out, the staff are there to generate sales and sell you stuff, not necessarily to provide advice on the best product for the job.

Anybody remember Colin Stevenson's bike shop on Grovehill Road in Beverley?  We had a wool shop on the corner of Grovehill Road and Cherry Tree Lane 200 yards away.  The entire right hand wall of that place was covered with peg board and had row upon row of models hung there, the shelves behind the counter were jammed as was his stockroom.  On my 13th Birthday, I was sent there to pick up a model my Mum and Dad had ordered for my present and you could not measure my dissapointment when, instead of a Frog Vultee Vengeance, I came away with a brand new British Eagle 10 speed racer :'(  Parents can be so cruel!!!

haha, thanks for your kind words, there's nowt I like better than getting stuck in and helping things come together.  I shall certainly get modelling and will be bringing something to the table for the Twin theme in November - maybe also a little WIP for October too.

Thanks again for the encouragement.

Thanks Kev,

I've got no online facility at home so am having to abuse the work computer at the moment.

Looking forward to picking up some good information and advice on here from you all.

General Discussion / Re: our show
« on: September 06, 2012, 08:15:01 AM »
Morning all,
I have finally got myself logged on at work as laptop at home is US (that's "unserviceable" and not "running on 110 volts with everything spelt incorrectly"!) so thought I had better make a post to say HELLO formally on here.

Thanks to all for making the show - our first and my first too - such a memorable event!  My camera is also US, so I would love to see ALL the pictures that were taken as there was a lot of inspiring stuff out there.

The opportunity to judge was a big surprise and I felt very flattered to be (t)asked.  It was the one of the hardest things I have done so for the standard of the models not being at competition level - I've all of a sudden got scared of building again  :D

Thanks again and I'm looking forward to our next one very much.
