General Discussion / YoHoHo Pirates Day 2021
« on: September 19, 2021, 11:04:07 AM »
19th Sept 2021 and its "Pirates Day" - no work on models as back is giving me trouble again, so its drink rum and watch the banana grow.
Before you ask YES the photos are taken today - the banana doesn't know its nearly winter in Yorkshire and is growing well and producing fruit.
I lied Zak when I said I DO NOT grow anything in my garden you can eat - well even if it grows larger fruit they are not edible, full of small black seeds from what I have been told.  So enjoy today whatever you are doing YoHoHo

Picked these up at Monks Bar in York, 4 sets of 4 figures.
Decided to change some of the swords to axes and maces ( not the spray can of mace before somebody tells me they did not have this in 1066), will change the shields on half the figures to make them English and leave the others with the kite type shields.

In Latin just for the ones who complained about my rules for the Roman camp.
Now what will my strange and different mind make of the pile of plastic shapes in the photo - will give you some time to make up your mind - hohoho

Modelling Projects / Romans
« on: May 28, 2021, 03:50:14 PM »
Had a day out yesterday to York - first time in about 16months.
Popped into Monk Bar and decided to get the "Call to Arms" set of figures of Roman infantry ( thought its only a small sale but hope it helps because of the shops being shut for so long)
The first few will be made as "Romans Nil - Barbarians One" -- looking at the figures they need a little work to remove some excess plastic joining arms and shield - but heyho it was only £5.50 for 16 figures

Modelling Projects / Mig 19 Farmer into a MC36 Frenzy
« on: May 04, 2021, 09:14:06 AM »
Happy Star Wars day to you all - hohoho
Its raining in Walkington so can't get out into the garden to finish off the bits I was doing - so some time for models.
Got this a couple of years ago at Telford  for the box price of  £2 - think I paid £1 - yes Zak I never change do I.
Its a 1/72 scale Mig 19 from KP models - now will it be done as a Mig19 - its me so some changes will make it into a MC36. The NATO name for the original was Farmer so this will be a "Frenzy" - hohohoh- now what will it end up looking like ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
Before any of you start thinking it will become a Star Wars thing don't bother -- my idea at the moment is worse - hohohho.
Bits primed and now off to do some more painting on the Alchemist of Bempton  and then the Varyag - sorry Zak

Modelling Projects / Soviet 180mm Triple turrets from the Kirov
« on: April 17, 2021, 09:08:17 AM »
Next research project now under way.
Reading in the new Fine Scale Modeler magazine and saw the Takom 1/72 scale model of the turret from the Japanese battleship Yamato.
Now that got me thinking (yes Zak its a BAD habit I have)  - when I was in Leningrad/St Petersburg a few year ago saw this from the coach and was able to get a quick snap as we passed it.  Next job is to find size, shape, what is the building in the background and what is the Russian lettering on the building and above the door.
Just for Haddock - she was a heavy cruiser called Kirov  8,800tons with 9 x 180mm guns in 3 triple turrets built 1935-9 with help from the Italian firm Ansaldo - now off for a coffee all this thinking has got my brain in a twist - hohoho

Modelling Projects / The Alchemist of Bempton
« on: February 28, 2021, 06:51:42 PM »
Doing some planning for the next model. It will be a middle ages octagonal tower (well 4 sides, floor and part roof), and a lower floor area for the cauldron to be sat in.
The wizard (that's Zak to you and me) will be reading from a large magic book placed on a lectern and surrounded by large and small bookcases and a wood chest, lots and lots of books and scrolls around the room.

Modelling Projects / New Russian Town
« on: January 13, 2021, 01:37:29 PM »
Reading a magazine article in the new Fantasy Figures International magazine about the "Lost Children of Pripyat" and decided that I would like to try and make a town sign like in the article.
So first thing was to change the name and then use the internet to translate into Russian lettering, then print off and stick onto some MDF. First letter cut out using my piercing saw - only another 5 to go.
Looked in the stash and found this set of Zvezda Russian Spetsnaz, decide they would look OK looking round the sign, might use all 4 or use only 2 and use the other 2 on a different Town sign.

General Discussion / Merry Christmas 2020 to all our readers
« on: December 24, 2020, 09:00:23 AM »
Well this has been a very very strange year and we have not had many club meetings, lets hope everything gets back to normal next year ( well as normal as our club meetings ever get) and we can meet up again and chat, laugh and enjoy life.
So to all club members and others who look at the web site - Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
The photo was a plain red car ornament with just bits of the side windows painted - its now been converted into a red mini with a black top for my friend who has just got one this year - so model making skills can be used for other purposes - hohoho

General Discussion / new scam on the e-mails
« on: December 06, 2020, 10:08:21 AM »
I know non of you are daft enough to fall for this but just passing information on.
Got an e-mail last night from a Mrs Natalie Wright with the heading "read and reply" - so have updated all my security and then had a quick look this morning.   It starts with Im Mrs Natalie  ( a big give away to begin with as they have not said Im Mrs Wright )  and they then go on to say about they have important information for me  about an investment partnership and to reply on an e-mail..
How anybody falls for this obvious scam I don't know but just letting you all know to be on the look out and just dump it if you get one.

Modelling Projects / Eat your heart out Zak - new world speed record
« on: November 07, 2020, 02:29:07 PM »
Just to show that others can make models as fast as Zak.
This is a Klingon Bird of Prey with the cloaking device operated, the more observant  may notice the ship is powering upwards as shown by the different heights of the holding rods.
Time started 15.07 time finished model 15.11  --- hohohoho  --- I know another clip round the ear when you see me

Its not my fault - blame Chris.  He mentioned about the Roman army using pigs in battle, so that got me looking and finding out about the use/possible use of this ( will not go into details as I know some of the group are a little bit squeamish - hoho )
Now how does this get me onto the next model I can hear some of you say - well when I was young, one of the poems my dad used to tell me was about Horatius the Roman soldier, on the bridge fighting the Etrustcan army, and you know Chris always asks if any zombies in my new projects.
So when reading an article in the new Fantasy Figures International magazine I liked the post apocalypse era  one showing a person in a gas mask with 2 children in masks and sussing out a shopping centre. Decided to blend the poem and the article and use figures I already have - so it will be a shopping centre with the steps filled with rubbish and 3 people guarding them, to stop zombies ( so Chris will be happy ) from gaining access to the upper level. So upper level reasonable clean and tidy with the lower level trashed, also I can start making the things for the lower level and blockading object on the stairs as I am working on the other models I have going at the moment.  Things to scratch build broken into and empty vending machines, step ladders, supermarket trolleys, crash barriers, sack barrows and anything else that comes to mind - suggestions always welcome. Also Horatius was nicknamed Cyclops because he had lost an eye in battle so must remember to give one of the figures an eye patch.

Modelling Projects / Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik
« on: August 22, 2020, 02:18:42 PM »
As my back is bad at the moment and not getting a lot of modelling done, decided to do the planning for the next model.
Get the smelling salts out for Kevin - its a plane, but don't get your hopes up.
It will be done well after the war and in either a Russian scrap yard or outdoor storage area at a museum.  John will be happy, lots of RUST on the central armoured section and faded paint on the aluminium wings and body, engine bay empty and pilots area damaged and full of rust - thats the plan at the moment.  If it ends up in a scrap yard will remove part of the wings so will have to sort out what the internal wing construction would look like - that should keep me happy and quiet for a few hours.

Modelling Projects / Respect for the fallen - KV2 after WW2
« on: August 04, 2020, 09:49:13 AM »
Looking in the loft for the next parts I need to work on the Varyag ( don't shout at me Haddock, it is being worked on ) and found this Tamiya KV2 tank.
John will be happy, it is going to be placed in a ditch and very very well rusted. Some of the parts like tow cable, machine gun etc will be removed and then on with the rusting. A couple of figures from the MiniArt Soviet villagers will be placed in the diorama alongside an old grave from when the tank was destroyed, hence the title "Respect for the Fallen"
