Modelling Projects / Golden Oldie
« on: September 08, 2022, 02:24:21 PM »
Thought whilst away in Devon i would take a slight 'change of tack' and go for a Golden Oldie build.

It's the Airfix 1/144 HP42 Heracles which dates back to 1965. It will be built straight from the box with no interior detail.

So this is the progress so far. The surface detail on the components is quite good but the fit is not precise and certainly not up to what we would expect from Airfix these days.

Interestingly Airfix, on their website, last week were asking which kits that modellers might like to see reissued. All I can say is be careful what you wish for! Some kits that seemed excellent years ago don't hold up well now.

Modelling Projects / Korean War Photo Recce Mustang
« on: June 21, 2022, 02:23:24 PM »
I have started the Eduard RF-51K Korean War Mustang.
There are lots of pieces of etched brass in the cockpit, making up most of the radio sets etc.
Closing the fuselage will be interesting!

Modelling Projects / Airfix 1/72 Mosquito BXVI

At the meeting on Wednesday 8th it was mentioned that the fairing behind the bomb bay was incorrect if built from the box. I am posting photos to show the correction which is really simple. Also the detail on the bomb bay doors needs sanding off until they are flush all over.

Modelling Projects / ARMA Hobby Hurricane I
« on: March 03, 2022, 02:38:50 PM »
Time for a new project from me.
I have been singing the praises of 'Arma Hobby' kits based entirely on the fine detailing and completeness of the kits in the box. Now this is the first of their kits I have actually started to build.
Step One. The undercarriage bay and cockpit. After a discussion with a knowledgable neighbour about interior colours of early Hurricanes I decided to make it up!
It's very apparent that like many new CAD designed kits the fit is very tight it is important to follow the instructions and essential to clean up each component of the parting lines and double check the fit as a dry run.
More to follow!

Modelling Projects / Next build in the BoB set
« on: December 04, 2021, 09:19:56 AM »
As you will all know I am slowly working my way through the BoB aircraft types. Building up to date kits from various manufacturers to display along side the best available back in 1968.

I have now just completed the Messerschmit Bf 110 build from the Eduard kit. Very straightforward apart from the overdone etch components which made some areas rather too complex and overscale.

Modelling Projects / Building the new Airfix Heinkel 111P-2
« on: September 02, 2021, 02:50:21 PM »
This build of the He111 is a replacement for the original Airfix He111 that I built back in 1969 for a display at the local cinema. Of course the original Airfix kit required quite a few modifications whereas this build is OOB.
As with all the new Airfix kits it's important to carefully follow the instructions and ensure all mating surfaces are clean any mould seam lines or paint. Once this is done the fit is excellent and it goes together very neatly.
The only modification so far is to fill the gap with plastic card where the wing mouldings can be seen from the cockpit, just visible in the underside view.

Modelling Projects / Airfix Beaufort
« on: July 25, 2021, 11:53:21 AM »
Whilst working on the Ju88A-1, I started the Airfix 1/72 Beaufort. Just a few impressions of the kit first.
1.It appears to be accurate and certainly is well detailed.
2.Typical of the new Airfix kits it requires care in assembly to ensure all the components fit together with no gaps etc. I slipped up a bit on the transparencies and had to do a little filling but looking at my second kit I really should have taken more care.
3.It is also very important to follow the instructions, especially regarding the assembly of the engines so mark them with the component number as you remove them from the runners.
I decided to hand paint this model but the lack of anything like matching colours in the Humbrol Dropper range decided me to use Xtracrylics. They do require a primer/undercoat and for this I used 'Ultimate Primer-grey' and the photos shows the model primed with just two areas painted with dark Slate Grey and Dark Sea Grey. Covering well and decal ready.

Modelling Projects / Revell Ju88A-1
« on: July 17, 2021, 01:17:52 PM »
For those of you who might be interested in my 1/72nd model of the Ju88A-1 in the most recent MoVT this is a bit of an explanation.
It's the new Revell kit, which is based in part on their earlier Ju88A-4 there are many new parts to produce an accurate A-1 and I have attached a photo of the specific nose section build OOB.
It has been built to replace my conversion of the Airfix Ju88A-4 kit built in 1969. There will be more to come on this set of models plus some thoughts on the new Humbrol Dropper Paints.

Modelling Projects / Kinetic Harrier
« on: April 06, 2021, 08:38:44 AM »
A few days ago I started my next project. The Kinetic 1/48th Harrier GR1-GR3 kit.
In the box there are a very large number of parts, many of which are not required for the GR1, as this is the latest kit in the series which includes the Sea Harrier and two seat trainer versions.
I found it quite important to follow the instructions as there are several instrument panels, seats, wings, fins etc.
I'm building mine as a very early 1 Sqn machine with red white and blue roundels, these were based at Wittering in the early 1970's
So far so good. Cockpit detail is adequate and the fit of the fuselage components is good but care has to be taken with the main u/c bay / air brake insert to ensure that it lines up flush with the underside of the main components. I used a small piece of plastic card to hold it in position at the rear.

Modelling Projects / A lockdown project
« on: January 20, 2021, 02:58:20 PM »
I have been asked if I could produce 4 model RF-51 Mustangs for a friend whose father in law flew them out in Korea. Not too difficult given that they would be built on a production line basis, mounted on a stand in a flying pose.
Once I had got hold of 4 Airfix 1/72nd kits then project started. They needed pilots, wearing Polka Dot scarves and this required a bit of surgery to create a pose with them looking out to poet. The Camera windows were copied from the 1/48th Eduard kit, then it was plain sailing.
This shows the project so far, I'm trying to create the effect of the spinner, spinning and it is covered in polka dots, not there yet. Also I have to print the decals for all the Codes and serials once the paper arrives from the Big H.
Ultimately there will also be a 1/48th scale kit to go with them which will be fully detailed and on an informative base.

Modelling Projects / ARMA Hurricane IIb
« on: November 12, 2020, 10:45:52 AM »
Here is my latest project, the ARMA Hobby 1/72 Hurricane IIb. Gem of kit and excellent detail, fit and overall surface treatment.
As an experiment I'm going to use the new Humbrol Acrylic Dropper Paints. Not a large range at the moment but a bit of careful mixing should do the trick.
I'll follow up soon to report on how it went.

Modelling Projects / Looking at a change subject
« on: October 22, 2020, 05:31:43 PM »
Looking out at the Queen Mary II which is parked up in Bridlington Bay right in full view I have begun to wonder about a model would make an interesting change. Revell do one, any thoughts on this kit?
