Title: Revell Type VIID Submarine 1/350
Post by: Bigkev on November 24, 2018, 03:10:23 PM
Hi All,
Currently on with a Type VIID Minelaying submarine in 1/350.
This basically the VIIC that I built a while back, but on this one I am using etched brass to replace the railings and grab rails etc.
As you can see I am now at the painting stage, the etch brass causing me a few headaches along the way, especially the railing around the upper gun deck.
Taking advice from Haddock, I used an old drill bit to roll the railing into a curve but could not get the radius I wanted, so resorted to a small section of brass rod of narrower section and tried again, after several attempts got something like.
Have attached some photo's of my progress so far.
Cheers,
Bigkev

The joys and delights of etched brass, it takes a lot of patience I find.
Looking good so far.

Hi Chaps,
Thanks for your comments. Yes, tried my patience a bit, but glad I got there in the end.
I can now see where a small bit of brass can eat up hours of modelling time.
But I must admit, on reflection I enjoyed the challenge, and I learnt a lot as I went.
Painting is the next step, and I feel a little more relaxed at that prospect.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Etch brass  - I use "naughty nautical language" -- but that only helps me to keep sane, the brass does what it wants.
Whatever you are doing keep on doing it Kevin, it is looking good at the moment. Glad you have turned to the dark side.

Thanks Msea,

It is only another passing phase to the 'Dark Side',  my next project is another aeroplane.....

Suppose, I'd better go and wash my mouth out now...……..

Gargling as I go...

Hi Kev,

just trawling through here (no pun intended) to see what I missed and imagine this, I'm building one of these too!  I picked mine up at Northern Model Show for £3 just because I liked the picture on the box and I started it yesterday at the open day!

I shall be having my first attempts at etched brass here after Haddock's little workshop so I'll see how it goes.  I'll also be borrowing from your article to hopefully avoid any pitfalls.  Typically, I don;t like to make things too easy so I've got a madcap plan in mind for displaying mine!  I shall start up a thread shortly!

Hi Wizzel,
Thanks for giving me a little kick up the proverbial.
I've returned to the VIIID and started to apply camouflage. At the moment I'm not totally happy with the paint job, but it gives you and idea of what I'm trying to achieve.
I have added camouflage striping to the hull, more concentrated around the centre and conning tower, but with a little disruptive camouflage to the bow and stern area.
Next job will be tidy up the paint job, to make it more consistent overall, and will also add some washes and filters later on in the build to make it more realistic.
The hull below waterline will be painted Rubber Black, and the deck RLM 74 Grungrau, then washed and weathered.
Anyway a few pictures after tonight's return to the spray booth follow...

Cheers,
Bigkev  ;)

Hi All,
Managed to get the deck masked and painted in RLM74 Grungrau. There will be a little touching up here and there but nothing major. Next job painting the hull bottom.
I'll post again when done, for now pictures of model thus far.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Hi All,
Looking at this lying on the shelf of shame (unfinished projects) I decided to have a go and finish it off at last.
I have now sprayed the hull very Dark Grey and then added a few Black highlights over the moulded seams. I then gave an overall Dark grey misted coat to reduce the starkness.
I then have removed the masking and given a couple of coats of 'Kleer' ready to add the oil paint washes and detailing. A selection of different colours will be employed to add interest.
Some pictures follow.
Cheers,
Bigkev

It's looking good Kevin. Taken you a while to do this one. You have some catching up to do to keep up with Dave.

The shelf of shame - I like the concept, maybe it could be a new theme on the website or even at club nights, if and when they ever happen.

That's a shame Msea.

There should be another shelf for you and you models, the 'Shelf of Weird and Wonderful' , but they are always thoroughly entertaining and inspiring.

Hi All,
Well I have now managed to add a wash of Burnt Umber Oil Paint to the upper surfaces and upper hull parts.
This was added in a couple of coats, using Oil Paint, and Turpentine.
The wash flows into the recesses, if you add too much, a damp turpentined brush lifts outs the excess so you can start again.
I will let this to dry overnight, and then in my next attendance at the 'bench' I will add some 'spots' of Oil Colour to represent, stains, rust, wear..
Some pictures of after the initial Oil Wash follow.
Cheers,
Bigkev

I think we keep motivating each other with this one Kev.  It's one of the side projects I am working on, though at a much slower pace than yours.  I too have the etched brass but have not yet got to the stage of applying any - but I'll be following your lead at a discrete distance!  You're making a much better job of this than I will, I'm sure.

Hi All,
Today I have been able to add the highlights to the hull and conning tower.
I do this by adding small spots of Oil Paint in selected points on the hull.
Then using a dry brush, I draw the paint in the direction of flow, gradually the paint thins out to a streak of colour of choice.
If you go wrong then a quick wipe with a turpentined damp brush quickly removes the paint, and you can start again.
I have now finished the highlights, and can look toward having the final details adding in the next few days.
Some pictures of my progress so far, sorry pictures are not as in focus as I would have of liked.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Great looking job Kev, well done. Have you seen that AMG are doing kits of seaplanes in 1/350 so they can cross-over with ship kits? You get a Bv238 to go with the U-Boot for a diorama.
I don't have a shelf of shame, it's a box at the back of the wardrobe but I do have a shelf of 'I must get round to finishing that off!!!'

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the update on AMG, something worth considering perhaps?
I have not found the BV238, but I came across a 1/350 Bv138 Flying Boat on L'Arsenal website, though I won't be getting one at 54 Euro's......Eeeek!

Anyway this project is nearing completion, I have now got all the main assembly and painting done, added the etch brass deck railings.
Some pictures follow,
Bigkev

Next time I hope to show the final finished item once decals and the aerial wires fore and aft, and final varnish.

Hi Kev, last night I watched Episode 2, Season 2 of Das Boot and one of the the U-boots crossing the Atlantic is camouflaged just like yours. All you need to model now is the grey north Atlantic storm swell!!!

Hi All,
Thanks for all your comments.
Model now finished.
And Chris, I've now got a 1/350 Sunderland so maybe the next sub build might be a diorama.
Some pictures of the finished item follow.

Fantastic paintwork and weathering Kev, well done. U822 in Das Boot has it's tiger stripes hand painted so they have a hard edge, I don't know if it's artistic license or not, plus at one point it's attacked by a Sunderland so there's an idea for your diorama.

Right then.  As I mentioned earlier, I have one of these which I started on one of our Sunday play days and it is now on my bench waiting to be continued.

Kev, I have a question about the etched brass railings around the conning tower gun deck (if that's the correct terminology?).  Did you put them on as 2 separate halves or  did you join them together first, roll them and then fix in place?

How would you do it Haddock?

Best ask Kevin. All I can say is don't be too ambitious.

Hi Wizzel,
Thanks for the enquiry.
For me, I made up each halve of the Conning Tower Railings, and made them fit with test fitting numerous minor adjustments.
I think joining before the two halves before attempting bending might be a bit too ambitious.
Like Haddock says, don't try to be too ambitious.
It's better to have a good result, and then learn from the good result, to have an even better result next time.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Well Wizzel,
That is one house point to you.
I tend to lose something when working with Brass!!
Persevere my friend, it will all come good with a little practice and patience.
Keep us posted.
As a hint, I did remember drilling some fine pilot holes for the railing stanchions to locate into better.
Keep going, you will get there.
