Title: Bronyekater thats Russian Armoured Motor Gunboat to you lot
Post by: MSea on March 09, 2018, 01:49:32 PM
Getting in on this missile lark, decided to make a WW2 Russian BKA 1124 with tank turret at the front and katushka launcher at the stern. Because its a gunboat Haddock can't shout at me for NOT DOING SHIPS.
If anybody is interested I can supply more information about the 1124 and 1125 range and if you are really sad I could always produce a powerpoint for the meeting --HoHoHo
The first photo shows a mock up to get sizes and position of bits and bobs.
Next photos show the rails for the rocket launcher being made and the final photo is the end of the rocket being cut to take the fins -- you know how clumsy I am, so if I just glue the fins on 10 to 1 will knock them off.
One cut another 7 to make. Forgot to say the scale is 1/72 so I can use some of the figures left over from a coupes of projects.

Three sections of MDF cut and fastened together for the hull.
The strange blue bit of plastic will be the main deck to go on top of the MDF.

Some cross bracing rods added to the frame -- don't need the frame to twist when I fire my missiles  hohoho -- now who shall I fire them at ?????
Last photo is the rails just placed on top of the frame -- next job is to fully clean up the frame then paint --  I am now asking myself why didn't I paint each individual  rail before I fastened them together, would have been so much easier  ??????

Anyway back to models - some parts made for the wheelhouse - now to glue them all together at right angles and in the correct position or Zak will scold me.

Well all sides fastened together -- not up to Zak or Haddock standard but OK for me.
Will let it go solid and then see if it needs any internal bracing, then clean up and a little filler on a couple of joins.

Boat hull cut to shape and some work done on the aft end. Wheelhouse and Katushka just placed in position.
Next jobs are to finish the missiles and cut the boat bow to shape , then make a T34 tank turret for the front of the boat - was going to get a 1/72 Zvezda model next time in York or Brid but decided that as the rest is scratch built might as well go "the whole hog" and try to make the tank turret as well.

Work started on the bow - and before you ask YES i did have the extractor fan running and a full face mask ( yes I do look better with the mask on than off) but remember that MDF is carcinogenic so if you are machining it, do take all precautions.

Holes drilled for the stanchions -- brass rod placed into the holes and cut to length  -- when they are all in place 2 rows of wire will be added for the rails.

All stanchions fitted -- now to make 2 bits of chain in small tubes to be fastened into holes in front of the ford stanchion -- to fasten the rails to the deck.
BH (Before Haddock) I would have just drilled a large hole in the deck and tried to glue the rails into this.

Thank you Bridlufc -- glad to be of help.
Started to fasten the top rail in place - slow job this one having to do one stanchion at a time.
Being a good Yorkshire man -- using cheap "knitting-in elastic" from Boyes. When all fastened in place will give another coat of primer, so did not need to run the knitting-in elastic on a black felt tip.

The exhaust made with brackets -- next to clean up and add nuts ( a blob of metal or plastic ) on the brackets.
The last photo is the end drilled out -- decided it would be easier to bend a solid bar rather than tube.

Brass bar filed to make a winch for the ford deck for the anchor and rope handling.
When ford deck is dry will drill hole in the deck, fasten the anchor to the other side of the deck and place chain between them - that's the plan at the moment.

As wise Haddock keeps telling me - before starting on any part of a model you MUST :-
Think - think again - then think some more - then plan - then think about your plan - make any changes - then think again about your new plan - only then do some work with tools and plastic.
So I did all the above before making the exhaust pipe for the boat. Drilled out the end of the brass before bending it to shape, made and fitted the brackets to the pipe in the correct place, making sure they all touched the deck and drilled out the hole in the deck so it would be strong. Glued the pipe onto the hole in the deck and glued the 3 brackets to the deck - sat back with a big smile and thought job well done.
Then I realized I had painted the pipe and brackets  deck grey but forgotten to make the pipe rust coloured. So now have had to paint the pipe in place with all the problems that has caused instead of BEFORE it was fitted to the boat. What will Haddock say next meeting ??????

Thanks Zak - but you see every problem with your own model, especially in photos. The rail stanchions are a bit thick - tank turret needed to be larger and wider - faces not up to Howard standard - but hey ho its only a model an supposedly for fun.
Will get on with shading on the sea and then a coat of gloss gel.
