Title: ICM. British Grenadier Queens Guard 916001) 1:16 scale
Post by: zak on September 05, 2016, 01:15:09 PM
I bought this from Veteranus Models in Ripon.
I also bought the Swiss Guard at our show.
Here are pictures of the instructions, artwork and parts.
The kit contains 28 parts that seem to be nicely moulded on first inspection.

Well the parts are quite nice but some gentle persuasion was required to get the legs to meet.

I am making NO comment about getting legs apart or together!!!!!!!!!

The more effort required to get a decent end result in a kit, the more pleasure I take from it.  I'd be glad to read as much detail as you'd like to regarding the painting of this as it's the area I struggle with now that I've got the hang of joining parts together.

Was it a personal visit to the shop and if so, is it worth a trip out?  I've wondered about a day out to that area so if it's recommended, I'll build that into the timetable.

Yes, its worth a visit, well stocked with proper modelling stuff, tools, books and unusual models.
There is also Newby Hall close by with a miniature railway. Ripon itself is also quite nice.
The shop owners are helpful and know what they are about.

I am not the greatest figure painter but will do my best.
I think Howard is more of an expert - oils and so on.

After assembly some filling was required around the arm joints and here and there.
This was then given an undercoat of grey.

In the meantime, scale raised its head.

This is 1/16 and so is the MiniArt French Grenadier.
So which is correct?
1/16 scale is 19.05 mm to the foot.
Using this for a basis then the ICM figure is 128mm to the top of his bearskin, so he is 6.7 ft, allowing a bit of leeway for the height of the bearskin this seems about right. I imagine a Guard to be 6 feet tall or thereabouts.
The MiniArt figure is 145mm to the top of his bearskin - 7.6 ft. tall - not to scale. Even if his head is hardly in the bearskin this cannot be correct. I think French Grenadiers were quite tall, so he may be 6 ft. as well?
Judge for yourself by the photographs.

I feel that whatever I say will be inappropriate and taken out of context.

Back to modelling, painting.
I undercoated the jacket and face white. (The jacket will be red and I usually find it is brighter with a white undercoat).
The face had a basic flesh tone applied.
Darker areas have had a dilute wash applied, once dry I will dry brush with other flesh tones, this will hopefully tone it down a bit.

Some dry brushing with lighter colours.
One coat of red on the tunic - brush painted.

Having served with the guards I can tell you that this is very authentic indeed, nice Attention to Detail, well done that man....you won`t "lose your name" for this one!

A grand job indeed.  I wouldn't make him smirk if I were you in case you end up in bother - after all they've already banned smacking and smoking!

Not really, there were only 28 bits, just lots of painting and watching it dry.

More of the same, well its a figure from the same source.
This is a Vatican Swiss Guard, again in 1/16 scale.
Some painting still to do.

His face looks like we look when we come out of Wetherspoons!...........................

Is this co-incidental or deliberate?

But as Haddock says, a very colourful figure.

How about the uniform as the new club outfit for SMW - I think it would match Neil's eyes ?????
