Title: N/S Savannah
Post by: MSea on August 22, 2016, 01:03:42 PM
She was the first nulcear powered cargo/passenger ship and was launched in 1959, taken into service in 1962 and taken out of service in 1972.
First - thank you Haddock for the model - but it came with the proviso that he expected me to do something different/strange with it.
So lots of racking what is left of my brain and some ideas came to mind but not good enough I think to satisfy Haddock. Then it hit me ( no,not she who must be obeyed) but how was the ship greeted when she was launched and how would she be greeted now.
So she will be placed just leaving a long jetty with people on the left dressed in 1960 style with pleasure boats and greeting placards saying such things as "Go Savannah Go" and "Nuclear power is good and the future". The people on the right will be dressed in 2100 style with greenpease demonstration boats around her, and anti-nuclear posters. The sea will also change from bright blue and smooth on the left to darker and choppy on the right.
AND BEFORE SOME OF YOU COMPLAIN THAT THE MODEL IS POLITICALLY AND ENVIROMENTALLY BIASED - ITS JUST AN IDEA TO SHOW THE CHANGING ATTITUDES OF SOME PEOPLE OVER THE INTERVIENING YEARS. AND AS I ALWAYS SAY ITS JUST A MODEL AND ITS FOR FUN.

Didn't say you HAD to do something strange, just thought you might!! Since when does anyone take any notice of me?
Haddock.
Nice idea though but I think we need a vote on this.

Haddock you know that I hang on every word you utter.
YOU can sort out a vote if you like !!!!!!!!!

Looking at the instructions - a lot of work to make the nuclear reactor and then you put it into a solid plastic container and then you put that into the inside of the ship and cover it over - what a waste of time.
So will look to find a clear ring and put the nulear reactor inside this and then display that on the middle of the jetty, between the 2 sets of people. Yes I know it would NEVER be placed in that position - its only a model for FUN.

Don't forget to paint the reactor green - remember THE HULK.

Sorry Zak the instructions say its Silver / Orange / Red / Grey and you know I always do what I am told -- HoHoHo !!!!!!!!

Post by: zak on August 23, 2016, 10:42:47 AM
I almost got a job a Calder Hall/ Windscale as it was then.
Paint it fluorescent green - go on you know it makes sense.
Title: Re: N/S Savannah
Post by: MSea on August 23, 2016, 11:55:43 AM
Sorry Zak but after 20 years with Shell green is NOT my most favorite colour.
They employed a psychiatrist to come up with a calming colour and it was "Eau de nil green" so it seemed everything was painted in this colour - after 20 years with everything painted with this - it drived me mad, so much for psychatrists.

Post by: MSea on August 27, 2016, 10:00:41 AM
Looking at the parts the weld detail on the hull is excellent, the moulded on  rails will have to be removed and replaced with etch and a few sink holes to be filled.
BUT the aft and ford deck have been cast different ways up and the ford deck has 10 ejector pin marks to remove and the aft deck only five -- so WHY  did they not cast this section the other way round to reduce the amount of clean up ???????
Title: Re: N/S Savannah

Could it be added modelling pleasure...........................?

Go on, fill those sink marks, ...................................oh, and smile.

The sink marks and the smile can wait - oh go on then thats a smile - its a shame you can't see it.

A base ring and base made for the reactor - a clear ring also cut from an orange bottle ( thats the drink, not the colour of the plastic before somebody asks ) The reactor is almost finished and will be displayed inside the clear ring.

Post by: zak on September 06, 2016, 02:56:24 PM
Surely not Martin, not a clear ring, what about the lead shielding?
Where are the control rods?
Who designed this reactor?
Title: Re: N/S Savannah
Post by: MSea on September 06, 2016, 03:14:55 PM
I shall bring it to the next meeting - so if you are worried bring your lead apron - or is that in use for the "bake off " programme ???????

Hull primed and the railings removed - sink marks still to be filled.
Several decks painted green ( not flourescent -- sorry Zak )

OK Haddock it will be finished as a ship not sci-fi. I know my place in the universe.
More bits added - will have to go back and work on the join between the front and sides of the ship

Don't over react (or).
Title: Re: N/S Savannah

Why would I over react - its got a good solid bit of clear plastic stopping the radiation leaking out, since I threw out that old lead shielding.
Now who shall I make the figures standing next to it on the jetty look like ???????????

Boat davits cleaned up - lots of ejector pin marks removed and the flash scraped off.
The last 3 photos show - boat davits added - rails fitted between davits - and the boats in place.

Three mast units made and fitted -
If you look at any photos of the ship they have walkways with rails on top of the mast units, but this is not in the kit. This has been made and will be fitted when they have been painted.

Work on the mast to replace the plastic ones so they will not bend when the rigging is added.
Some of the mast detail ( lights , radar etc ) has been glued to the replacement  brass mast.

Sea with basic blue coat - then start with changing the colour from light and flat at the stern ( pro nuclear people ) towards darker and rough at the front ( anti nuclear people. )
Wait for it to dry and then a coat of gel.
