Started the hull last year and she was going to be full hull displayed on plinth ( I liked the icebreaker bow shape. ) Now going to change her to waterline and diplayed on Kronstadt harbour scene showing the seamans cathederal in the background and the statue of Admiral Makarov on the dockside -- thats the plan at the moment.

The base made and the basic shape constructed for the jetty. Next a layer of plaster of paris on the jetty so I can carve out the lines between the building blocks.

well, at least you know all that stuff is there! I'm as interested to see the construction of the base as much as the ship - it's a real learning experience for me.

First layer of plaster of paris on the jetty.
All casement guns have had a replacement brass barrel - she had 16 x 4.7inch, as well as her main armament of 12 x 12inch.
The deck has been painted and yes she did have metal sections running across her decks - it just looks different/wrong take your pick.

Yes, I'm definitely inspired. I'll be having a look at one of them Haddock made me buy off him shortly I think - it'll be straight from the box though for now. None of that brass malarkey just yet, not until I've had a good chat with you both.

This is rather speedy.

As I said on the first page - this was started last year and some parts like the deck and main guns finished -- so just bashing them together at the moment.
The jetty is new, but will take longer to do, as I have run out of plaster of paris (I bet Haddock starts with his PPP and PPP and he can PPP )

Dry run with some of the parts loose fitted.
The fit on this Zvezda model is excellent - you have to make sure ALL paint and glue is removed from joints or they dont fit together - causes problem sometimes with making unit blocks and adding them to the main model.
BET HADDOCK COULD DO IT EASILY !!!!

`tis a bit quick, init!

A couple of jigs made to hold blades so they are able to get the plaster of paris flat and to shape.
The first has the bar holding the blades so it is able to be set at different hights and then dragged across the top of the jetty. The second is just a blade fastened so it can be dragged allong the front edge at 90 degrees and clean that up.
The jetty is now roughly to shape so will have a final thin coat of plaster of paris and than cleanned up and the block work marked into the plaster.

Of course, you just know that Zak will be there with his set squares and spirit levels to try and disprove you jigs' effectiveness. Again, impressive stuff - for them that have the time to be impressive.

I have decided NOT to be a Mini-Haddock --- after another session of %**&>< and other such expletives when making the ships masts. I will now make the masts and yardarms for the next ships from solid brass bar, and solder them together ( for strength, ) then use Haddocks chain method to fasten the rigging onto them.

Hadock help - have you any idea if the ships boats on the russian battleship Sevastopol ( Gangut class ) faced ford or aft ? The instructions show them facing aft but it looks wrong to me. All my books show close ups of other parts of the ship or indistinct ones of the ships boat stowage. The only one I have found on the internet show them facing ford.
You know what its like somebody does something one way and a second person copies them then a third person -- then IT MUST BE TRUE because 3 different people have done it that way -- I like research from photos because they tend not to mislead you as much.

Start on the statue of Stepan Osipovich Makarov (1849-1904) who was lost when his ship the Petropavlosk was lost outside Port Arthur. The figure is from the Airfix WW2 Luftwaffe Personnel set - and has had another outing as a figure on the "Abandon D.U.C.K. River Thames London September 2013" model.

Figure converted to a long coat and naval hat. The figure of Makarov is on top of a red rock placed on a concrete step with anchors and chain surrounding it. It also has what seems to be a dragon or sea monster climbing up the red rock (we shall see how that goes !!!)

Just to confuse things, I've got Revell's Gangut kit in my "pile to do", it depicts the after group of boats facing aft. However, I think it is probably a re-boxing of someone else's kit, we could have the same kit in a different box. The box measures 500mm by 360mm roughly to fit in the biggest sprue.
I wouldn't mind betting that they've re-boxed the Zvezda kit and copied the instructions.

Yet again I think you are correct ( about the Revell kit, ) just looked on line and the sprues look the same layout as on the Zvezda kit.
The figure for Stepan Makarov has lost half his milliput beard - so more hair growing before painting the figure bronze. The red rock has had a base coat of red paint before drybrushing with several different reds. Then on with the sea monster ( no not Kevin )
The back board has been made and will be fastened to the base, then 3-D trees and shrubs made to cover the join and the different section of photo on the back - any bits left in sight should be covered by the small buildings and the statue. That is the plan at he moment !!!

Hi Kiteman - the idea is from my head -- and as the others will tell you --that is full of very strange things !!!
How about this for MAD - when I get the WW2 battleship Marat -- I shall place her in front of the Odessa steps from Sergei Eisensteins film "The Battleship Potemkin" with figures painted grey acting out that section of the film on the steps in the background.
Ho Ho Ho Ha Ha Ha and other maniacal sounds !!!!!

Well Makarov has grown his beard and has had a coat of bronze.
Sorry to tell you all NO KEVIN on the statue - it looked like a sea monster to me in the images but reading up on it, they say "Makarov is standing on top of a wave gesturing towards the future" well it still looked like a sea monster to me - or is that my head again ?????

A start made on the tree - "she who must be obayed" nicked a section of tree wire and has made me a figure to go with the model - not sure about the scale??
Next job is to add filler to the tree trunk ad branches then some foliage.

Your comment about "branching out" got me thinking.
I am doing more trunk work -- the elephants trunk from the last model -- the tree trunks from this model -- and finally some rich peoples travelling trunks when I do the Titanic model for Joe.
That should give you a whole new topic to make jokes about !!!!!

Well small foam blocks placed to check for size and look.
Other 4 photos show the tree with base coat and first coat of paint then with rubberised horse hair for branches and finally with dryed green tea leaves added for leaves.

Well Kiteman I dont know about my "natural side" but the buildings are now well on the way.
The sides have thin strips of plastic and the roof has glasspaper tiles. Individual planks are picked out with different colours and when they are dry -- a coat of pledge and then some washes to blend in the colours and tone them down a little.

Doors will be placed slightly open so the area behing them is painted black.
The doors are single sections of plastic scored to show planks and then sections added to give strength.

Anchors made to go round the staue of Admiral Makarov.
Brass bar bent and solder together and a brass loop made for the top. Good job I got some black chain at Telford last year -- now Haddock can start with his chain jokes again !!!!!

At Telford I got etched brass 1/350 scale bike from L'Arsenal to go with the group of sailors having a small revolution on the dock next to the Sevastopol and the statue of Makarov. Brass rails are bad enough but this has been a pain ---- and to cap it all when the bike was finished, the carpet monster got it ( a lot of naughty natical language ensured ) it has now been retrived but is a bit bent but never mind ( I bet you most of our group can't even see it on the dock - but I know its there. )

I have got myself an offcut of lino from our floor covering shop which I've cut to fit and laid it under my bench. No losing bits in the carpet for me!

Well building now have doors and are fitted to the dock. The white words on the walls is not just a lot of russian looking letters but reads "Freedom,Equality,Fraternity" and the other is " All power to the soviets" --- see a bit of research pays off in the end.
Now to make the buildings look part of the landscape not hovering above the floor, a bit of dirt and muck should do the job !!!

NO Kev -- the base is nearing completion but the ship has lots and lots and lots to do to try and get it up to anything like 20% Haddock Standard, and the sea is not even started.
That is my new modeling goal when I can get to 50% HS my life will be complete.

Start on adding the rails. The model is by Zvezda and is excellent. The fit is so neat you can't have a coat of paint on the bits if you want a good fit
Photo 6 shows the way they have made the ships sides and deck so that a groove is left, to fit the rails into - makes life easy.
Photo 7 before you all complain that I have NOT made the rails follow the shape of the ships sides - I found a close up photo of this section on the ship itself and the rails DONT follow the sides but cut across like I have done - research is everything.

Flags started

Was just thinking about the good old days BH ( thats Before Haddock if you are not sure ) when I was happy to just fasten a bit of thin thread round a metal post and stick the flag onto this. Now its fasten a thin thread onto the first of 2 chain links and then fasten this round the post and pass the flag rope through the second chain link and fasten them down.
All I can say is, thanks Haddock, it takes longer and the language is a bit more nautical but the end result is much improved.
