Title: Andy's Long Dock
Post by: MSea on May 13, 2023, 09:22:51 AM
Sorting out what to do at the next playday and decided to do this model.
First many many thanks Andy for the Italeri dock, when you gave me it I thought it would be great with the MiniArt set of Soviet Naval Troops that I had in the stash, and a ship alongside - then the trouble started  :-\ :-\  The dock is toooooo wide for my display case, when it has the  ship and dock fitted, so first thing will be to split it length ways and that makes 2 models, then the size is so large think I will have to sort out a lot more figures to go on the dockside. Then it really started what ship to do alongside at 1/35 scale - yes it is going to have to be scratch built, so out with the books and finding one about the correct size.
It could be a G-5 class motor torpedo boat or either a BKA 1124 or BKA 1125 (but have made one of them in the past see web site) - THEN I found that in 1916 the Tsarist government had 9 armoured river gunboats built at Boecker & Co in Reval and some still active at the battle of Stalingrad during the Great Patriotic War as the Russian call it. Now as you all know - hohohho - Russian ships are renamed a lot of times and also rebuilt to modernize them over a very long life - so at the moment am trying to follow the time line for the boats and find good building plans.   Before anybody asks the second section of dock with the rail lines is being used for a scratch built American "Zippo" brown water monitor during the Vietnam War - well that the plan at the moment

That's EVERY brick painted - next the ironwork and then 50 shades of grey for the stone blocks - then washes to tone it down and tie it all together

All the stone blocks picked out in assorted shades of grey from very dark to light and some blue ones as well.  Looked a mess untill 3 coats of very thinned down medium grey painted over them to tone down and bring them together.

First - Francis wins the prize - for spotting that some fool has put the last couple of photos of this model in the Grafskaya string  :'( :'( :'( :-\ :-\ :-\
So the wooden rubbing posts are now painted and dry brushed and fitted to the model.  Before somebody tells me there should be a green line at the waterline of the dock and posts - they will be added when all bits are fitted and the line will be one line not several different levels if I did them before assembly

First of many sections of plastic skin added to the wooden frame, when dry and solid will add the second section of the deck and then trim to size. Then its the fun of adding the ships sides to the ship shape  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Both sections of the deck added and end sections of the ships side in place.  The wood block on the center of the deck is the start of the midships house - now your question what is the hermesetas tube doing in this photo  8) 8) 8) 8)

Title: Re: Andy's Long Dock

A start made on the wheelhouse - sides made in card to check size and then cut from 0.7 plastic and the door marked and cut out on the first side.
Will make and fasten sides and top to the wood block , then add any detail inside the wheelhouse before adding the front section -  that's the plan  ;) ;) ;)

Tea has taken longer than "she who must be obeyed" thought it would so have been able to fasten both sides onto the wood block and also finf the steering wheel - amazing what you find in craft shops   ::)

Filler added to the stern of the ship, will smooth off when dry. Also the wheelhouse has now had its front and armoured window made - MUST remember to add all the bits and bobs inside the wheelhouse BEFORE fastening the front section into place permanently  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Thanks Kev G-J for the bits from the magazine how to build the Bismark.  The scale is 1/200 so will show the boats upside down on the 1/35 scale dock so they fit in,  will also drill out the props and rust them up and make a pile with the anchors.

A trip out to York yesterday and picked up the set of MiniArt rail wheels - asked about cost of and truck last time and decided that being a good Yorkshireman would get the wheels and make my own, never go down the easy route - hohhohoho.
Now its looking on line for size and types of trucks and wagons - have wheels to make 6 wagons, all for ?10 and you get the springs as well, just the body, buffers and hooks to make  :( :( :-\ :-\ :-\
Title: Re: Andy's Long Dock
Post by: MSea on June 30, 2023, 01:12:44 PM
Wheels sorted out I think - thanks Zak for the info.
Change of plan for the ships on this second section of Andy's long dock - it was going to be a 1960 American zippo gunboat but have decided to change it to 1946/7/8 French gunboats - they used  anything they could get there hands on for boats and weapons so this will give me more lee way and the rivet counters can't say "its wrong" it should have 7 bolt holes not 6  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Springs fitted to the truck base and wheels placed into the axil box - all they need now is a cover on the bottom of the axil box to stop the wheels falling out - but doing this without gluing the axils to the axil box so they still turn and the truck runs on the rails OR its glue it all solid and don't have the truck being movable  :-\ :-\ :-\

Wheels painted and also the frame - wheels fitted into the AXLE box and bottom cover fasten into place ( needs trimming and painting before somebody reminds me ) and YES the wheels still go round
So we can all sing "the wheels on the truck go round and round" next playday - hohohho
Or 4 wheels on my wagon?

You can sing either one Chris - but let us all get inside Cass Hall before you make it rain - hohhoho
Postman has just been and delivered some Hornet Heads from Historex, have some British WW2 tank riders on order, so will change the heads to make them fit in with the 1947/8/9 ship dock in Vietnam.
Now who will keep Howard looking the other way so he doesn't see how bad I will end up painting the faces  :o :o :-\ :-\ :o :o

Looking at images of landing craft that could be converted into gunboats on the web. Made a card mock up to get size and tried in place next to the dock. Before the rivet counters get out the old slide rule and tell me its the wrong size  I KNOW - but its a conversion done in Vietnam so they could have changed anything, also I don't care, it a model for FUN not an accurate museum piece  >:( >:( >:( >:(
Will now have to remove a section of the wood so that it sits down in the water because you can see the base of the boat and it does not want to be at sea level - now how deep shall I cut the hole  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

The 2 figures have now been primed and the hole enlarged to take the hornet heads. So now to decide what colour to do the working uniforms, I don't have to worry about the "kepis blanc" as that will be white with a black visor

Those vents will certainly add to your model. Nice to have a good friend (Chris) who can produce them in 3D printing.
Coming along nicely,
Kevin

Yes all part of being in a good model club Kevin.
Holes drilled in the deck alongside the hull for the stanchions of the ships rails.  Now to find the small beads to glue on the top for passing the top rail through.

Post by: MSea on October 15, 2023, 10:55:19 AM
First bead glued to the top of the stanchion - now let it go solid before adding the other 25 and threading the top rail through them all WITHOUT  any off the beads falling off -  :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :'( :'( :'( :'(

No Zak you know me flutter here flutter there - when I stop enjoying doing a model, just move on and then come back to it when the mood takes me  :P :P :P :P :P
Remember its for FUN not to have lots of finished models that you don't know what to do with. So make diaramas as they take a lot more time to do compaired to just making a plane or tank or ship  ::) ::) ::)

Post by: MSea on February 28, 2024, 09:31:50 AM
Have put some green oil paint along the waterline and was about to mark the position of the 2 boats and add some Gel between the boats and dock ( the area I would not be able to get after boats fitted) THEN  LOOKED and thought what a clown.
Have not put any form of protection against the dock wall - so looked for old tyres but had none, so have decided to do what I have seen in some small ports in the north of the USA - wood beams hung from the top of the dock by rope.
Title: Re: Andy's Long Dock
Post by: MSea on February 28, 2024, 10:27:07 AM
Four wood sections under construction - top just cut wood, next down gouges and cuts in the wood, next down wire brushed and last one with some wood stain
Title: Re: Andy's Long Dock
Post by: MSea on February 28, 2024, 03:46:15 PM
Gel added to the back section of the water and the wooden protection blocks added to the dock side.

Two boats fastened in place when dry and solid will add some more paste to the waterline , to make the boats sit in the water not sit on top of it.

Rust is the best think to do - nobody can say its wrong - rust comes in all types, shapes and shades - hohohho - rivet counters.  ;D ;D ;D ;D
3 photos ship sitting on top of the water, next waterline started to be filled in and last the whole lot done - now would/will anybody have noticed - YES Haddock

Coat of gel now added top the water ( gives it depth and a bit of gloss ) its still wet near the boats waterline , thats why its white, will go clear as it dries.
