Title: Korean War Photo Recce Mustang
Post by: meremodeller on June 21, 2022, 02:23:24 PM
I have started the Eduard RF-51K Korean War Mustang.
There are lots of pieces of etched brass in the cockpit, making up most of the radio sets etc.
Closing the fuselage will be interesting!

1/48th or larger?

I think it might be 1/48th.
Whatever it is, it looks good.

It's I/48 scale and I have manage to close the fuselage halves together.
More photos to follow, including the wings and wing to fuselage which are all very tight!

These photos show the fuselage together and the lower wing with the u/c bay in position.

I found that the shape marked with the arrows 'A' just fits into the position marked on the view looking up into the cockpit. It will then fit almost perfectly!

Hi Meremodeller,
Nice work. Looks like Eduard thought a lot in the planning of this kit to make it easy to all line up properly.

Wings on and detail of the wheel well, looking good straight out of the box.

Painting the wings. Trying to replicate the upper surfaces and lower surfaces back to the main spar which were filled and polished smooth before being coated with Aluminium Lacquer.

Hi Meremodeller,

That is looking nice. Nice to see you paying attention to the varying surfaces of 'Silver', most would think that they were all natural metal.
Will look great when finished I am sure.

Hello Big Kev, the fuselage is made up of a patchwork of natural metal panels so there is going to be lots of masking during the application of Alclad. I'm thinking of priming the fuselage with different Alclad primers initially, hoping that the subtle changes will show through.

Work done now includes the various Alclad finished panels. Looking closely at Korean War Mustangs none appear to have really highly polished or new natural metal presumably because they had been either in storage or with the second line units stateside until the war started, therefore no Polished Aluminium Alclad paint has been used.

No doubt this looks even better in reality. I think it's great when panels are painted different shades of aluminium/silver as all one shade makes models look like toys. Well done Bill.

And now on to the Decalling.

Almost a DISASTER!!!

Having a applied MicroSet to the port fuselage to apply the Star/Bar and Code, the ALCLAD finish just dissolved and turned into a metallic grey mush! Fortunately I was able to clean it up and then alply a coat of varnish. This worked but of course it meant that the 'raw natural aluminium look' was lost.

The rest of the decals went on with no trouble although there are an awful lot of maintenance stencils which are not in any logical order on the decal sheet.

Now adding the details, care needed within the undercarriage as it is quite flimsy,

Now complete although it will eventually be mounted on a base with unit badge and details of its history.
Learnt quite a lot from this build. 1. Eduard give far too much etch brass in their 'pro' kits. 2. Alclad and Microset do not mix. 3. Although the square tipped prop looks to be cropped it's not. Only 1 inch smaller in diameter than the earlier version.
