Title: 1/35 Cereal Packet/ Cardboard Modelling
Post by: zak on October 13, 2021, 08:04:34 AM
I decided that the next part of my railway inspired modelling needed a larger building.
This is the front of what will hopefully become an engine house.
This will hold a large beam engine for pumping large volumes of water.

The basic shell is foam board covered with individual bricks laid in an English bond.
This has yet to have windows and other detail added.

The second picture shows the start of the beam engine.

Flywheel and beam, all from card.

I coat/soak the card in French Polish, it can then be sanded.

Thanks for the info about French polish - another skill to learn and put into action. It looks good at the moment will follow with interest

The original idea was to use the Airfix Beam engine, but I couldn't find one anywhere online.
I don't suppose anyone has one going cheap!

I there no end to your talents?

I think beam engines go "puff puff" slowly, not cheap.

A bit like you in your smoking days?
Adding the mortar wash accentuates the brickwork.

All I got out of cereal packets was those little plastic gifts.

I did find the Airfix Beam Engine on line and bought it for £20.00 including postage - from Triang Man. He also had lots of stuff from my youth for sale, I wasn't too tempted but the memories of Triang railways and Minic Motorways flooded back.

I sorted through my paints, looking for grey/ slate grey - here are all the greys that I found - i have not included the Tamiya here.
37 I think.
I bet Haddock has more shade of grey, maybe Chris too,

Just had a count up, I make it 28 but I haven't counted Lifecolour or AK Interactive naval colours. Some look more like light blue, some of the blues are really grey and some greens could be grey.
I've now ignore the name on the bottle and just look at my paint chips and their numbers.
Don't get me going about Naval colours, it's a minefield.
Haddock.

I have 27 just in the Mr Hobby paints. Like Haddock there are some blus and greens that are close. I have not gone through the Humbrol enamels.

Many beam engines had a walkway around the beam to allow for oiling and maintenance.
This is from card, straws and wire, a bit of tweaking is still needed. It will have to be removeable so I can get to the working parts.

I am not sure how much will be visible with the building on top?

Hi Zak,
Very nice work. Where was the Bridlington Waterworks?
Bigkev
As far as I can tell, it was up Mill Lane and the older maps suggest that there were two, They appear to have has reservoirs attached, but details are hard to find I may need to visit the library to see what i can unearth.
I was only going to represent the outside of the building.
The only picture I could find was here https://www.flickr.com/photos/erarchives/28662774101

I am going to use it to house a pumping engine. this will be a steam marine engine of the double oscillating type.
