Title: German WWII Projected Atomic Bombs
Post by: cph64 on August 10, 2021, 01:37:10 PM
I bought this set of weapons some time ago with the intention of building them as the occaission arose, the small Uranium bomb will go with the recent Me. P 1100 build. Made by Antares it consists of four resin bomb bodies plus some smaller pieces for fuses, plastic card fins which have to be cut out and a length of wire.
A little background to them as per the insert. By the end of WWII Germany had reached some success in developing nuclear weapons but due to various factors ranging from wrong decisions by it's leaders, inside quarrelling and sabotage the weapons were never used in anger. Four main types were to be develpoed: A small Uranium bomb 'Kleiner Behalter', with and without parachute, SA 4000 isotopic radioactive load with conventional explosives or 'other' substances, the 4 tonne Uranium 'Grosser Behalter and the 4.5 tonne 'Innsbruch' Uranium bomb.
Kora released resin kits of the 4 and 4.5 tonne bombs complete with trailers in the past and these will be used as reference for building my own trailers.

Bombs away Chris - will it be in a diorama ?????

Knowing Chris,

His latest build will be used in conjunction with this, to tell a 'PROBABLE' different history.

Fins cut out and fitted to two of the bombs with the fuse also fitted to the 4.5 tonne. All primed and painting started. Inbetween I've started building the trailers. The wheels were made some 30 plus years ago whilst I had some 'spare time' on the night shift during my first attempts at making and using moulds. I've started to clean them up and drill holes for the axles in the rear. Compared to our experts in the Club this is Sunday League Football but I've enjoyed working things out.

I like the scratch work and casting your own wheels.

Hi Chris,
Very interesting.
Will we have a an aircraft for the delivery of the said weapons?
Cheers,

The recent Me P.1100 will deliver the smallest then possibles for the larger are the He 111 Zwilling, JU 290A-7 or a Blohm und Voss 'What If' that I'm making up from spares. At the moment I don't have shelf/cabinet space to make my larger kits!!!

The completed trailer for the small Uranium bomb. The chassis is the oleo legs from an old kit, the lifting arm is a Matchbox Arado 234 C-2 spare, the small wheels and bogie are BV 40 spares and the big wheels I think are ex Spitfire. The braces and towing bar are fuse wire with everything painted Tamiya German Grey.

Slowly but surely I've managed to get a bit further. The wheels have been cleaned up as best as, drilled and then painted, two of the cradles for the large bombs were made from Evergreen angle with that for the large round 'Innsbruck' being made from the spare rear cockpit combing from the Matchbox Heinkel He 70 plus struts from Evergreen strip.

Finally managed to get this finished after our trip to bonnie Scotia. The small Uranium bomb is being readied to load into the Me P.1100. Just before we went away I cut and fittted the fins for the 4 tonne Uranium bomb and used a point brush handle and tape to form the ring. I thought I'd give it plenty of time to set whilst away but on returning it had set out of shape. Perhaps the Plasic Weld had pulled it out of shape? Anyway it was no good so I reduced the height of the fins and found a suitable ring in the Ar 234 spares (what would I do without these lately?). The supplied wire was cut to size and fitted and decals were sourced from spares as were those for the trailers. Towing arms again made from 15amp fuse wire. After a coat of satin varnish it was out with the Flory washes, dirt and grey, then it was job complete.
