Title: 1/35 mine with narrow gauge railway.
Post by: zak on June 06, 2021, 08:56:55 AM
1/35 mine with narrow gauge railway.

The ore will be delivered from the working face using a narrow gauge railway.
1/35 scale equates to 8.709 mm = 1 ft.

I will use track with a gauge of 16.5 mm and so this will be just about 2 ft gauge.

I purchased some V skip trucks to carry the ore.

These are resin with some metal parts.

As you can see they are not very complicated and go together well, I have three to build.
I hope to have some sort of mechanism whereby they are discharged into the truck.

Heavy Metal probably.
I have a liking for Tungsten, I can then use Wolfram somewhere, but things may change.

I did think about uranium as well.

It will be undercoated, given a coat of rust coloured paint and the weathered and more rust added.

Meanwhile on the 3' x 2' baseboard the track has been laid and wired up.

Yes, he will stood by the skip. The mechanism is so it can be operated "no hands" so to speak, from the rear of the layout.

Corrugated shed built as per Nissen huts in Battle of Britain thread.
It disguises the mechanism for righting the skips.
It will be painted and rusted.

Yes, you can produce an endless variety of terrain styles by mixing lengths and colours.  I didn't buy any aerosol layering spray but use a spray bottle with diluted matt mod podge instead.  I do have a spray can of Halfords lacquer though so I may try that and see what happens.  A lot of people airbrush the grass too as well as mixing colours as I found out from watching videos on the you tube.

Yes, a lot of good stuff on the net.
As I get more adventurous I may try other techniques.
At the moment I am struggling to model, after a weeks visit from the mother in law.
I need to get my brain back in focus.

The sequence will be something like this.
Loaded trucks arrive
One is uncoupled
Truck is taken up the incline
The ore is tipped into the truck
Truck is righted
Empty (ish) truck is left in siding
Loco returns down the incline to pick up another
Once three are up the top they return to the bottom for more ore.

I have been looking into this, I cannot find anything at a price I like - cheap, yes.
Also most sound modules are for mainline locos not this small narrow gauge stuff, the sound would be all wrong for a small petrol/ diesel engine.

The building takes shape on the lower level.
The interior has been pinched from an earlier model.

I know the feeling - I either break something by hand or if I drop something and it is heavy, it goes right in the middle of a model.
We know you will fix it and make it even better than it was before - did you use " naughty nautical language" - hohohohhoho

Excellent Dave cheered me up watching this in action -  only 2 small problems.
First you did not sit in the background going chuff chuff chuff.
Second the "time and motion" people will be chasing you up, the truck did not empty all its content so this will be costing the company lots of money every time you empty a truck - hohohoho
Guess its another clip round the ear for me  when I see you  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I first went to Beamish in the mid 1960's, the excavator was in bits then, with an old bloke with a wire brush sitting among it all.
In those days there wasn't much and it was much lower key, but still enjoyable.

As board 1 nears completion, I am trying to create a series of mini dioramas within the whole.
Bulldozer being refuelled.
Workshop with vehicles being worked on - motorcycle, tractor awaiting a tyre.
Fully equipped workshop.
Brick shelter under construction, still to add tools and so on.
Rubbish dump.
Unloading/ refuelling area.
Workman's hut.
Working point levers.

Hi Zak,
I like the idea of 'Diorama's within a bigger diorama'
Is the tractor to be considered an ex-USAAF impressed into another role?
I do like the idea of implementing of previous builds, you must be honorary 'Yorkshire' now, you are displaying real 'Frugal' characteristics.

Small brick coal bunker and the puddle/pool under construction.
The owner is obviously well ahead of health and safety measures.
The old workings have flooded and may be a danger to non-swimmers!

Testing the excavator, it works after a fashion, I now need to construct a loading hopper so that the ore(vermiculite) always goes in the v truck!
I had to add lead weight to the jib, I now need to disguise this as well.

At present it is in my modelling room.
I guess it will stay there until I get fed up of it in the way.
Or I get permission to put it elsewhere - I'm not holding my breath on that one.

I was wondering about a small 15in railway like many seaside places have, but then again maybe not.
Before you say it Scarborough was 20 in gauge.

Fantastic work. Perhaps your next project should be building somewhere in the back garden to house all this?
