Title: Romans
Post by: MSea on May 28, 2021, 03:50:14 PM
Had a day out yesterday to York - first time in about 16months.
Popped into Monk Bar and decided to get the "Call to Arms" set of figures of Roman infantry ( thought its only a small sale but hope it helps because of the shops being shut for so long)
The first few will be made as "Romans Nil - Barbarians One" -- looking at the figures they need a little work to remove some excess plastic joining arms and shield - but heyho it was only £5.50 for 16 figures

Hi Msea,
Lots of detail painting to keep you quiet with these.
What type of plastic are they moulded in? Hard or Polythene type?
I think the Walkington Legions will be making their presence felt.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Hi Kevin - they are a hard plastic, with good detail. Only problem is the way they have been made the shoulder and the shield has a large amount of extra plastic - but it will soon be removed  along with the seam lines.
The set contains 4 sets of 4 different soldiers so could make them into 2 or 3 different dioramas - you know I like my history, so we will see what comes of this. If nothing else its another sale for Monk Bar Models and more for the shelf of shame in Walkington - hohohoho

I don't believe you have a shelf of shame Martin.
I'm sure you'll come up with a masterpiece.

Thanks Chris but I DO HAVE A SHELF OF SHAME - but every model I have made has given me some fun and enjoyment.
Its the making not the finished article for me - but if you ask Zak he will say I am strange at the best of times - hohohohho

Yes I agree Martin. I get the most enjoyment from the making of the model. It's icing on the cake if it looks good.

I thought they were all of a polythene like material, soft plastic surely, thermosoftening, thought you taught technology.

There is hard plastic, soft plastic and very soft plastic - hohoho - its how it cuts and sands not what they say is in it or how it was made  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I once tried removing seam lines on soft plastic with a heated pin as suggested. NEVER AGAIN!!!!
Being Grammar School educated, don't you know?, we had to study Latin for the first two years. The school motto was 'Labor ipse voluptas'. I'll leave that one with you. A clue. it wasn't most of the time!!!

Have tried them both ways Andy - looking inwards it just looks like 4 soldiers about to beat each other up - so its outward facing for the finished model.

Two templates made to get the eagle wings and unicorn horn on the shield design.
Next job is to paint them and hope they are symmetrical and look OK and pass the Zak test without bad comments

Two different gold colours added to the shied, next job is the copper edge on the shield and then the black or red markings to add to the gold sections after a coat of varnish.

While waiting for Zaks ditty, some ideas for the shields.
Top row the disc cut from thin aluminium, and a hole cut in some paper/card. Middle row paper fastened to disc and bottom row paper cut at the edges of the disc.
Works OK but will have to make a lot to be able to choose the best, and will also try and think of another way to do it. Might try and fasten a bit of solder around the disc edge and see how that goes - suppose I could just paint a ring on the risc edge but would be best if it has a slightly 3D effect
