Next research project now under way.
Reading in the new Fine Scale Modeler magazine and saw the Takom 1/72 scale model of the turret from the Japanese battleship Yamato.
Now that got me thinking (yes Zak its a BAD habit I have) - when I was in Leningrad/St Petersburg a few year ago saw this from the coach and was able to get a quick snap as we passed it. Next job is to find size, shape, what is the building in the background and what is the Russian lettering on the building and above the door.
Just for Haddock - she was a heavy cruiser called Kirov 8,800tons with 9 x 180mm guns in 3 triple turrets built 1935-9 with help from the Italian firm Ansaldo - now off for a coffee all this thinking has got my brain in a twist - hohoho
-
This should be an interesting project.
-
Looks interesting.
Wonder if they are still useable?
-
If the people who put it together are like most of the Russian engineers I have met - then I think it will be in full working order Zak -- shall we go and test it ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Thought this was a photo of Mr Haddocks house. BIGA BOOMA!!

You may be correct with that Chris but it will all be scratch build so "no models will be harmed in the making of this one" - hohhohoho
Have found some good images on the internet and also found a scale drawing of the turret in one of my books " Soviet Warship Development" by Siegfried Breyer - so at the moment am getting the size of all parts of the turret in 1/72 scale sorted.
-
Another unique Msea 'Project'.
Will it be set in a diorama??

Yes Kevin will try to replicate the buildings behind the turrets and the wall/floor area - did you notice the ammunition in the slots in the wall ???
Now I need help (yes Zak you have said that on many occasions) the turret will be about 130 x 97 x 49 mm in size - should I make a top and bottom plate with a box between them and fill in the outer area with filler OR should I make the turret from individual layers of 2mm acrylic and shape them down to size - decisions decisions decisions.
For your information Chris the building behind the turrets is not the "MCIOOP" its the "College of Shipbuilding and Applied Technology". If I do the figures playing about in the space, will put one clown sitting on the barrel of the gun and pretending he is :o :o :o :o :o now who will I make that one look like ::) ::) ::) ::)
-
Decided that 1/72 scale will be too large so will it be 1/144 or 1/200 scale.
The base size of the turret would then be (66 x 45 x 24) or (47 x 32 x 17) at the moment think 1/144 scale will be best to make the building and area around the turrets. Before you ask Haddock decided that 1/350 scale would be too small.
-
Like me, smaller the scale the more the challenge.
1/144th will give a great representation of this project.
Well done!
Cheers,
Bigkev

Top , bottom and center plate made the height will be 21mm at the front of the turret sloping up to 25mm at the back. then making the sides slope from 35mm at the top down to 45 at the bottom - think this will need lots of coffee and naughty nautical language to get it correct
-
Yes, but you have made a start.
-
Yes, but you have made a start.
Is that on the model, the coffee or the naughty nautical language ???????

I put money on the last two!
-
You are correct Chris - hohohoho
-
All 8 levels now fastened together - yes the shaping on the sides has been started but not the change of level on the top, before you ask.
-
Turret and barrels now made - a little work still to do on the blast bags then all to fasten together.
After making the turret I have decided to make this just a stand alone model without the 2nd turret and building - have other things that I would enjoy working on more than making this into a large model with building.
-
Barrels fitted to the turret
-
Looking very good. There's a fair bit of work gone into this.
-
Thanks Chris - more to do. Seeing as it will be a stand alone turret not the 2 on display, will have to add all the little things like ladders etc that had been removed.
-
Looking good.

Another inspirational build to help we kit makers!!!

Looking good Msea,
Was this trip to see these, an operational update with the KGB???
Looks like you'll need that 'Mac' today.

Proper modelling Msea. looking good.
-
Yes Kevin you have to touch base at sometimes and report in - hohohohho
-
Still more amazing stuff!
