Title: 1/700 Sailing Ships
Post by: zak on March 17, 2021, 01:36:01 PM
Meanwhile, while I try to model serious stuff, this was a bit of light relief.

They look good. How big are they?
The frigate is about 8cm long.
They are smaller than the Serapis and Bonne Homme Richard.
They are by Warlord Games and come under the heading of Black Seas.
The ships are a small plastic kit, hull(2 halves) deck masts, figurehead, stern, anchors, boats and so on.
They have to be rigged,
The ratlines are printed on clear plastic and it doesn't show if the light is right.

Hi Zak,
Thanks for the update.
They look great, and until you said about the ratlines, it took a further much deeper longer look to see how they are represented.
Are you now 'Nelson' for the time being....?
I'll turn a blind eye if you are, Oooops sorry! 'Nelson'

Great!
Did you ever do the Airfix 2/- ones from years (decades) ago?
I did them all when I was a kid, Cutty Sark, Victory, Golden Hind etc.
I think they brought them out again recently!
I used to mainly do Sailing ships when I started out modelling, rigging with cotton
pulled through candle wax, then watch the masts bend as it shrank at different rates at each side!
No Albion Alloys in those days, Tony.
I did the Revell Cutty Sark, the big one, when I was about 16, that was a long time ago now.
(Cut out the remmannicsingcing and get on with something useful you old s*d0

Hi Howard,
You made more than me, but I did have a great sense of enjoyment from those I did.
Was it a quick simple build, that looked like the real thing in a smaller scale, yet very quickly.
Very enjoyable nonetheless.

I did them too, I recently did some on the East Yorkshire theme.
Great memories, but maybe not the models, they didn't half attract the dust though,

Yes the rigging ended up twice as thick with the dust after about a couple of weeks - the "good old days"  -- :o :o :o -

A very nice harbour indeed. It does set the models off well.

Post by: zak on March 21, 2021, 03:35:45 PM
Replacing the clear plastic ratlines with home made ones -rather time consuming.
No shine when you look at them.
I have also added furled sails to some of the models, these were made from card.
I wanted some of the fleet to be at anchor.

Post by: zak on March 21, 2021, 03:55:51 PM
More of the same, this brig and frigate have home made ratlines.
The lighthouse and Martello tower are from Warlord Games, Black Seas, they just needed painting.
The harbours were scratch built.
Nothing is fixed in place,

I like the effect of the diorama. It certainly adds a lot.
Title: Re: 1/700 Sailing Ships
Post by: zak on March 23, 2021, 02:21:37 PM
Sorry I forgot to explain fully what the kits contain.
These are proper little kits, many are plastic and come in the usual fashion attached to a sprue/runners.
This is the merchant ship, you get two one large and one smaller, they are very similar.
These have resin hulls and white metal fittings, you get clear plastic ratlines, flags, boats, figure head(s), card sails and so on,
I will replace the ratlines with home made ones.
You also get some thread for rigging, I used some finer stuff.

In the original set there were 3 frigates and six brigs.
I decided to make some of the brigs larger and smaller - a cut and shut exercise.
One of the brigs as a pirate ship.
The first picture shows, an original and a larger and smaller one.

Post by: zak on March 30, 2021, 01:04:48 PM
These are two Schooners. They are white metal kits, approximately 4cm long. the second picture compares them with a frigate and a brig.
More work is needed on the sails.
Ratlines are home made.
Rigging is fine thread.

The frigates were used for quick delivery of messages, these are of the 10 gun variety, such as HMS Adonis.
Perhaps the most famous schooner was HMS Pickle.
Go on then tell me why.

As a beginner 'Admiral' Zak is in charge of his fleet.
At this build rate, Britain and Zak's navy is due to have the most number of ships in any nations navy, by the end of 2021.
Not sure if the technology of the period relates to those of nowadays, but numbers count!
