Title: The Alchemist of Bempton
Post by: MSea on February 28, 2021, 06:51:42 PM
Doing some planning for the next model. It will be a middle ages octagonal tower (well 4 sides, floor and part roof), and a lower floor area for the cauldron to be sat in.
The wizard (that's Zak to you and me) will be reading from a large magic book placed on a lectern and surrounded by large and small bookcases and a wood chest, lots and lots of books and scrolls around the room.

Some progress made on Zaks magic books to be placed on the lectern and chest/table.
All they are are bits of post it notes, card cover with wine bottle foil tops wrapped round it and the center pages from the internet.

Some posters to act as scrolls that will be placed in a bin and some on the bookcase as well.
The photos show the front and back of the posters - because they will be rolled up I have used some water soluble pencils on the back to take away the very white colour from the paper.

Martin will have to shrink a bit. I think the bookcase was only a few inches tall!

Yes Chris only 3 inches tall - so I would be only about 2 inches but still causing problems.
Some different colours on the flagstones and some bricks have colour on them  - next a coat of varnish and then some washes.

No by post Chris - they are from Nathan at Mighty Lancer - but am waiting to see if he can get me an after the apocalypse figure in 70mm - so will get them all set when/if he gets them.
I have enough to do at the moment with floors, walls, roof, book etc before I get started on the figure.

Thanks for the comments - table and chair will have to wait until I get the wizard - can then sort out position and size and decide what else is needed - Zak needs a lot of space to wave his hands about to get the bottles to pour into the cauldron on their own  :-* :-* :-* :-* ;D ;D ;D ;D ::) ::) ::) ::)

Its got to be two other committee members.  ;D
But who  ::) ::) ::) ::)
Next job remedial work on the walls.  When I started I decided to make the floor and 4 walls as separate bits of MDF and add the plaster to each, so I could work on them flat. When they had been  painted  have fastened them together but am not happy ( you can find the other 6 dwarfs) - the stones don't match up and it has small gaps at the corners.  Have decided that as I am making balsa roof beams covered with tiles I will make some balsa support beams to go from the floor to the roof  between the walls this is to  hold the roof beams up - that's my excuse anyway.
If/when I do another castle/middle ages room like this think I will make all the walls and fasten them to the floor section before plastering and painting - more difficult to work on but think it will give a better finish - so now into the loft for the balsa box :) :) :)

Card roof section made and the internal beams shaped and added to the card.
The 3rd photo is a card basket that had an Easter egg in it for "she who must be obeyed" and she has given it to me  - so will cut out sections to go between the beams and hope it looks like wattle to hold the tiles on top of the roof.

Title: Re: The Alchemist of Bempton
Post by: MSea on March 14, 2021, 12:38:39 PM
Have used round brass bar to bend them round but decided they needed a flat section on each side to help glue them down. So bent round bar and then used flat pliers to turn each side up a bit then re-bent round bar.
First row of tiles added - and yes it did my head in - now only another 6,864 tiles to go then the ridge tiles - who's idea was this, oh yes it was mine  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Some colour on the diver and before you say it the mask is filled with gloss varnish that has not set yet that is why it's a funny colour.  The gunmetal blue at the bottom of the figure is what will be in the cauldron with the figure emerging from the surface.

The underside of the roof finished with sections cut from "she who must be obeyed's"  Easter egg box.
First shot is showing the sections in place on the under side of the roof and the second shot is from inside the building with the roof the correct way round this time.

Hence my asking about the rain.

Its a WIP - the beams between the wall sections have to be lowered a little and then the roof section glued down onto the top of the walls.
I have to finish all the stuff on the walls first - like the lights/torches, pictures of Zak, broom ( how else will he travel), stand for hat and cloak and a clock so he can tell the time - easier to add them before fitting the roof in place.
Just at the moment spending a lot of time in the garden so not going at Zak speed only warp 6, but will try and speed up to keep you all happy - if that's the word I am looking for hohohohoho

I have a friend who is into carnivorous plants, he once took me up the NYM to see some sundews, I was a little underwhelmed, they were tiny.

Thanks for the comments.
Zak has now landed in Walkington - hohoho - now the hair will be ginger but shall the cloak be Royal Blue or Purple ::) ::) ::) ::)
The cauldron is 3D printed and am just deciding if I place it on the fire as is or remove the hanging rings and replace them with brass rings and chain and put it hanging on 3 metal bars - decisions decisions decisions ??? ??? ??? ???. Might have to clean up the outside of the cauldron as you can see the lines left from the printing process - but for £4 I am very impressed with it. Thanks Nathan.

More work done on the cauldron and fire.
The model of the diving suit coming out of the cauldron has small beads glued on and when the PVA has dried will touch up with the gunmetal blue paint to harmonize them all into one, then add the 2 pots of ingredients (eye of newt) pouring themselves into the pot
