Title: HK Lancaster 1/32
Post by: councilman on November 14, 2020, 03:37:21 PM
Well, I'm not building much at the moment. Busy at work and all that.
I hope to start this Lancaster nearer Christmas when work dies down. I bought it from John H (he had 2). I had been playing with the idea of getting one for some time.
I also sent off for some after market bits from Hannants (gun barrels, instrument panels, and engine rocker covers. Lots of money but lots of fun.
Now, do I go the whole hog and get the running engines and sound???
Will keep you all posted..
Andy.

Thanks all,
I have the modeling datafile on the Lancaster and there is lots of stuff on the internet.
I have just ordered the sound, lights and working props set for it. Biggest investment in a kit I have ever made. Scary!!
Andy.

You 'Little Devil You!'
No pressure on this build then.
I am sure you will keep us entertained and informed with this build.
Right, go off and have a sit down and a big Whiskey to calm the nerves.
Cheers,

Yes, if you look at the picture of the parts, there is a circuit board that controls the motors lights and sound. The hardest part is going to be getting the propellers to run true. There are 4 3D printed bushes to attach the motors to the prop bosses but they're not 100% true. I may look for a brass replacement for them.
Now, I wish I was a model engineer...  ::)

Bit of turret action. The paint tin is for scale.  8)
The fuselage and wings will contain the wiring and I need to make myself a build plan for this. That's why I'm building the 'peripheral' parts first.
Don't know if that makes sense but I always need a plan even if its a bad one...
Title: Re: HK Lancaster 1/32
Post by: councilman on December 06, 2020, 03:37:45 PM
Now for some Tail action.... That doesn't sound right.  :o
Anyway, there is a problem with the horizontal tail planes. If you build them as per instruction, you end up with a top with a top and a bottom with a bottom. So I simply cut off the locator pins and to two large pins on the stub and carefully stuck them together. Nothing too hard and it doesn't seem to effect the dihedral.
Thanks go to 'Nigel's modeling bench' youtube channel for the heads up on the tail fault.

Latest SLOW progress.
I'm waiting for the Eduard instrument set from Hannants, then I can crack on with the flight deck.
The gun turrets went together without a hitch with the fit of parts being very good. Care should be taken when installing the machine guns so that they line up correctly with the separate barrels.
The scope for super detailing this kit is huge. I'm just trying to keep things simple. Just like me...  ;D
Thanks all.

Yes Chris, I used the Eduard detail set. They look a bit too clean but with a small amount of weathering they should look good through the glass.

Zak- No I don't know what I'm going to do with it when its finished. I think I have my head planted in the sand on this one.
Chris- I don't think you will be able to see much through the windows with my skills that may bee a good thing. The kit comes with a full alternative CLEAR fuselage. I don't plan to use it but at this time 'all bets are off'.

Here's the latest progress, I think we are nearly done building the crew compartment. The next step is to start putting in the lights and electronics. Wish me luck... :o

Here's the first of the LED's going in. Progress is even slower now (back at work).
Making the lights work is the easy part, constructing a model around them is the tricky bit.
The wings are designed to detach for transportation which complicates the wiring further.

It is a good job, that they are.
Andy is planning to partially 'fly' his latest creation on completion by adding them to the upper of the car.
I remember a certain trip to Huddersfield with a 'Concorde Casket' balanced on the laps of those in the back.
This is much bigger, so the wings need to be able to be removed.

I've made some more progress on the lighting...Although you cant tell.
I have found that getting the fuselage halves to fit together whilst juggling with the wires will be no mean feat. Learning on the job.
The control board will live in the bomb bay so I can get to it for any future fault finding. Of course this means no bombs or detail but I don't want to bury every thing away so I cant get at it.
Thanks all.

Well the size of the thing has given me a few problems. The most tricky thing was getting all the bulk heads to sit in the right place, without trapping anything.
No offence to Hong Kong Modell's but this is no shake and bake even without the wiring.
All good fun.
Title: Re: HK Lancaster 1/32
Post by: councilman on February 02, 2021, 07:04:24 PM
Next job is to tidy up the wiring in the bomb bay. The wires have a tendency to wrap themselves around anything and everything.
The LED wires are only one strand thick so I've been careful not to bend them too much incase they break, I must have tested them a dozen times already.
I'm soldering the wires, with heat shrink sleeves to make sure they're insulated well.
Thanks all.

Thanks for the tip Chris, I used a hot glue gun. In hind sight I should have installed the wiring before construction started then I could have cut channels into the plastic without other kit parts getting in the way.
I got there in the end.

Keep up the good work Andy. You'll have it finished for the competition in December (I'm sure we'll be having meetings then).

Well, I got all the wiring in, in the end.
I'm at a point now where I'm happy with the electronics. The fuselage joints are filled to a reasonable standard, so I can take a short break from the kit. I fancy doing something a bit simpler before I tackle the wings and motorized props.
By the way, I think I have solved the wobbly prop problem. I will share it with you all in the next post.
Bye for now. ;D

Pleased to hear that you have solved the wobbly props, nothing looked worse on some of the excellent models out there.

Last one today.
I bought this tool from the US in an effort to avoid the 'Wobbly Prop' situation.
Its maid of aluminum and looks to be really well engineered. One for Mr Haddock to look at.
More information to follow when I've had a chance to use it.
Thanks all.

Progress made on the undercarriage, although the paint work needs tidying up a bit.
Looking forward to the engines and motors next. Make or break time. 8)

I got a bit of a shock when I put the wings on. Its going to be even bigger when I fit the wingtips and tail.
People keep asking me where I'm going to put it when its finished and I cant answer them... .. Exciting stuff though.
I know, I'm very sad.  :o

Excellent work, on a sure footing with this one (pardon the pun!)
Never mind biking to work, get those four props turning and you could fly there in style.
Nice, very nice.

This is my effort to try and avoid the 'wabbly prop syndrome'.
The picture shows the white 3D printed shaft you get to link the motor to the prop, however the shaft dose not run true.
What to do..
Title: Re: HK Lancaster 1/32
Post by: councilman on June 09, 2021, 06:53:55 PM
So here's the fix... I hope. ;D
I bought some brass watch bushes. Now, they don't quite fit the prop bosses but after adding some heat shrink wire insulation and trimming to length they fit quit nicely without any glue.
I then mounted the motors directly behind the props witch takes out some more of the 'wobble'.
The kit spinners don't spin totally true but I think I'm getting there. Time will tell.
The wings are almost built now. more pics tomorrow.
Thanks all.

Keep at it, the MK1 eyeball is a very precise piece of kit.

Title: Re: HK Lancaster 1/32
Post by: councilman on June 10, 2021, 07:00:19 PM
I could do with your MK1 eyeballs for this one Mr Haddock.
Wings!! BIG WINGS...Here they are... I can just fit both in the spray booth. Its going to cost me a fortune in paint.
You can see the motor directly behind the prop.  You get 4 Merlin's in the kit but I have just built one into my offering. This means I have 3 Merlin's going spare. ::)
For my own sanity I have chosen to concentrate my efforts on the functionality of this kit more than super detail.  Good move... Bad move?? We will see.
Thanks all for now.

Disaster :(
I dropped the bloody thing while I was having a move around, it fell 6ft from a shelf.
BUT... We can rebuilt it.
Title: Re: HK Lancaster 1/32
Post by: councilman on August 23, 2021, 06:04:25 PM
On the mend. It was touch and go for a while.  ;)

The electronics survived but the fuselage was split in three places. I had to put a metal staple in to stop it splitting again. The size and weight of the model has thrown up a few problems, but we're getting there.
More pics to come.

Hi Andy,
That's a corker of a model.
Love the finish, especially as some of it is through a rattle can, rather than an airbrush.
Are you sure, you're not 'Banksy of Driffield'.....??
Cannot wait for you to cross that finish line.
