Title: Revell Type VIIc/41 1/350
Post by: Bigkev on October 16, 2020, 07:18:59 PM
Hi All,
This is my current project.
A Revell Type VIIC/41 in 1/350.
The submarine was an improved version of the Type VIIc, with the provision for a 'Snorkel' to draw air into the submarine to allow it to recharge its batteries whilst remaining submerged.
Also around its time of introduction, the change of tactic's was to stay up on the surface if caught on the surface, hence German submarines were up gunned to provide extra anti aircraft protection.
The tactic was quite successful and many aircraft were either damaged or shot down during attacks, only superiority in allied numbers/resources degraded the tactic.

Anyway, I have got so far with the build, and have started to add the Eduard etch brass for this kit, and I am happy with the progress so far.
But it is a time consuming progress, as Haddock will agree with his ship models.

Some pictures of the progress to date follow:-

Cheers,
Bigkev

Good job with the etched brass.

Thanks Zak,
The 37mm gun was eye numbing, and you needed four hands to do it.
I'm going to attach the conning tower railings next, then paint job of this and hull, finally adding last railings and all guns periscopes, etc.
Well that's the plan at this moment....
Cheers,
Bigkev

Very nice. You can't beat a Type VII. Great skills on show.

Hi All,
Thankyou for all your comments.
I've made a little more headway with this kit.
Managed to attach the conning tower railings and get some ID yellow airbrushed on.
Noticed that there was a seam on the upper conning tower that needed attention, this was filled with 'Greenstuff' and then some Mr.Surfacer 500, then sanded back. Now sorted.
Some pictures follow:-

Bigkev

I like the idea of a balsa block sub. Nice, exacting work.

Clever wooden hull.

Yes, this was a late German project to save the use of valuable metals.

The use of light weight materials was designed to give the German Submarine fleet over its rivals, however as can be seen, the idea of streamlined designs had not quite caught on at that time....

Clever wooden hull.
I think this version of the Type VII was designed for fighting it out on the surface against air attack.
Great skills on show,
Andy.

Hi All,
Been a while since last posting.
I have now managed to get most of the painting done, and weathered the sub.
Moving on will be any detail painting, final etch brass items, the aerials, periscopes', breathing apparatus, and weapons.
Model is shown in its glossy varnish, so will be toned down once all items in place.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Mental note to self; must dip into club site more often.

That is a fine build Kev, excellent work on the etch and overall a very convincing build. I have no doubt it will be a fine replica.

Hi All,
As promised a few more pictures of the progress to far.
I have added the railings, and rear stanchions, and touched in the paintwork, added the propeller's, and painted the anchor.
Also, I have painted the lifebelts, added the motif to the front of the conning tower.
Hopefully, I will be able to bring it all together this week.
Cheers,
Bigkev

That's a really nice looking model.
Have you thought about one in a diorama, at sea or in a dry dock or U boat pen?

Das Boot even for inspiration.

As you're probably aware, I'm not very fond of submarines.
This could change my mind.

Long Range version by Bronco models.
Should have a little more to show you shortly.

What role did the Type IXc play?? Was it a mine laying boat???
