Title: Panzerkampfwagen III and variants
Post by: zak on October 10, 2020, 03:57:00 PM
I will change the title when you get it.

This is a different kettle of fish to the Tamiya kits.
In this kit all the suspension is made up of many parts, unlike Tamiya where it is all moulded on the chassis.
So here are some pictures, the spring is made from 3 parts and the bit above is also 3 parts.
the bottom picture shows the assembled spring.
So lots of bits to stick together.

It is a tank, but what sort, it is German, if that helps.

Here is a bit more, this just shows the number of bits needed to make part of the suspension.

Only another 3 to assemble.
I think I'll go and have a lie down.

This is the PzKpfw II D/B from MiniArt and as you can see lots of bits to keep me busy, this one will take a bit longer I feel.
Title: Re: Panzerkampfwagen III and variants
Post by: zak on October 12, 2020, 01:45:52 PM
I have just about completed the suspension on one side.
Lots of small and intricate parts, including some etched brass.
It probably looks better the right way round.
Title: Re: Panzerkampfwagen III and variants
Post by: zak on October 12, 2020, 02:41:52 PM
Sometimes I wonder if kit makers just try to make something from as many bits as they can.
Each pair of wheels is made up of 9 parts.
8 to build.

And so you really know that you've built the model.

The track is composed of 96 links on each side, each link has to be taken from the sprue and cleaned up.
They are then connected with 2 track pins.
The picture explains it all.

You'd have saved yourself a lot of time and trouble if you'd built this series using the 'First to Fight' 1/72 scale releases!!!

Thankfully no, that is usually metal tracks, a la Cyril!

One side down, t, ime for a lie down!

Hi Zak,
Not only a lie down, you deserve a G&T, and a medal.
Love the Panzer builds, I'm being educated in the types development with your builds.

Quite a few bits of etched brass, I have attached 8 so far, but really too small to see well.
The next ones are a bit bigger, a grill and some chains on the smoke dischargers.(I presume that is what they are)

Looking good - when you have painted the very very small chains, will you go back and clean out each hole in each chain link ?????  hohoho

A little more progress.
A close up of the cable and attachments, all etched brass and the ones on the corners are quarter circes that have to be bent up at the edges to guide the cable.

Hi Zak,
Some left over paint from some household decorating, 'fuschia pink?'
No doubt a purely reasonable explanation for undercoat for a forthcoming scheme.
Cheers,

All over rust?
Title: Re: Panzerkampfwagen III and variants
Post by: zak on October 17, 2020, 04:01:05 PM
Not overall, but using the hairspray technique, I wanted to depict a tank as used in Norway, towards the end of its life, looking tired and worn out with primer, bare steel and some rust.
Only 15 III B's and 30 III D's were produced and use to invade Poland. The armour was not up to much and there were wheel and suspension problems. They were relegated to training and then given a new lease of life in Norway in 1940.
I have trying this out on the turret for now.
Title: Re: Panzerkampfwagen III and variants
Post by: Bigkev on October 17, 2020, 04:22:12 PM
That looks very good Zak.
I will watch and learn, I want to try out the hairspray effect too.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Looking excellent. By the way what's the hairspray effect? I've missed something somewhere.
After painting the tank with the desired undercoat (mine was supposed to be lead oxide primer), this is allowed to dry and the model is given a coat of hairspray - proprietary chipping solutions are also available.
This is allowed to dry.
The top coat is applied and is allowed to dry.
This is then worked on with a brush or whatever(toothpick, cotton bud) with water and eventually the top coat loosens and comes of in patches to reveal the undercoat.
I have posted another picture to try to show the effect.
I am notb sure about the colour of my primer, but I was trying to avoid a too orange look.

The problem with the real primer is that it was dark and bold so you would have had to tone it down for scale effect anyway on the outside. A great job, well done.

While waiting for the paint to dry on my Marder III, I started this. This is a later variant and has the better torsion bar suspension and only 6 road wheels. This model is from Das Werk. It is  Sturmgeschutz III with moulded on Zimmerit. So far a very nice kit.

It is, some etched brass details but a nice kit.
The tracks are single link around the idler wheel and the sprocket, then lengths and single links to fill in.

As is often the case, assembly went really well until all the parts had to come together.
I struggled to get everything into the hull and to fit correctly, several attempts, some filing and trimming were required and some gentle persuasion.
Eventually it did fit, just about.
