Title: Ilyushin Il-2 Sturmovik
Post by: MSea on August 22, 2020, 02:18:42 PM
As my back is bad at the moment and not getting a lot of modelling done, decided to do the planning for the next model.
Get the smelling salts out for Kevin - its a plane, but don't get your hopes up.
It will be done well after the war and in either a Russian scrap yard or outdoor storage area at a museum.  John will be happy, lots of RUST on the central armoured section and faded paint on the aluminium wings and body, engine bay empty and pilots area damaged and full of rust - thats the plan at the moment.  If it ends up in a scrap yard will remove part of the wings so will have to sort out what the internal wing construction would look like - that should keep me happy and quiet for a few hours.

Ee tha does like trashing some great kits, lol!!! Looking forward to seeing the end result. Don't forget to drill out the pilot's console to make it look like the clocks have been salvage. A nice touch that

On the list alongside engine removal, port wing to be bent up, props to be bent backwards. most plexiglass removed and the 37mm gun and reward facing machine gun removed as well, was thinking about removing the pilots seat but think it would look better all rusted and messed about.

Cool project.
Don't forget the birds nest in the engine intakes...
Andy.

Pilots seat ground out and the pilots console has been drilled out ( showing that Chris has been around nicking things ) second photo is the engine compartment  bulkhead and the last photo is some of the bits painted gloss black and overcoated with aluminium.

You come up with some great ideas  Martin. Sounds good.

Thanks Chris - my philosophy is "why just make it out of the box when you can make lots and lots  of extra work for yourself"-- the other thing is that you can always tell one of my models from the rest on the table.

Yes that's all true on all counts.

Yes, indeed, always make extra work.

It's funny how we modellers always seem to make extra work for ourselves. The number of times we say 'I'll build this OOB', then..........

Body, pilots area and prop fastened together.  Dark rust on the armoured tub and some aluminium on the rest of the body.

Bits of wire and bits and bobs out of the scrap box to add some interest to the empty engine bay - when dry will rust them all up.

How is the wire wool rust going?

Hi Msea,
Looking nice, another forgotten item.
Just check as you go along, most IL-2's especially later variants, had a large proportion of wood in thier construction, wing's, fuselage's, etc.
Although, it could be an orginal Msea item, not standard stock.
Cheers,
Bigkev

You are correct about the construction Kevin but I want to do an aluminium surface in its old age - so its a combination of old and later sturmovik ( in other words another abomination out of my head - hohoho)

How is the wire wool rust going?

Put the wire wool and vinegar in the jars and they are at the bottom of the garden - not looked for a few days, must go and see but its the LIVERPOOL match now so will check another time.

Coat of chipping medium and then light grey over this - then some chipped off showing the brighter aluminium showing through.
When dry will give it a wash of white/aluminium and then more chipping medium and the camouflage colour of faded green and brown.

Just doing some long overdue catching up.  I'm liking this one MSea.  It takes a good amount of imagination to destroy an aircraft convincingly, and you're not short of imagination!

Wall and sign made next job is to try and make the wall stand up more, then some wood blocks with tarps over them and general bits of cast off materials and planes.

Box with tarp on top and some general rubbish to go behind the plane. The plane has now been covered in hairspray and some liquid mask on the rusty cockpit and engine bay.

Green and brown added to the plane - when dry will remove most of this to show the aluminium colour underneath.

Its in the outside holding area of the museum, so it could have been in that position for a long time.
You know I don't like pristine paint jobs.

No Haddock ---  RUST on the armour plates that  made up the cockpit area and just distressed aluminium on the rest of the plane that was riveted to the metal cockpit.
