Title: Albatros DII 1: 48
Post by: Kiteman on December 22, 2014, 08:49:38 AM
So after building a couple of really cheap models I decided that it is time to get back to my roots of biplanes and decent kits. So the Eduard 1:48 Albatros D II is on the menu. Lets see what we can make of it:

I built one some time ago, nice kit, so it should be better than the old stuff you were struggling with.

Should I recognize this kit?

I don`t know....should you?
By the way, I have recieved some green stuff from scallywag Dave for my Xmas present. Don`t need it on this model though. I will have to build another old one to try it out!

Seem to remember Wizzel setting off to Germany with some WW1 kits ( ex Haddock ), thought this might be one of 'em. Looks good though.

Like the wood grain, how did you do it?

....and a bit more. The woodgrain is sheet decal from Uschi van der Rosten. I don`t know if you know it but basically it is A4 sheets of transparent decal with only woodgrain on it, no colour. The hard work is cutting out all the panels so that they fit precisely and getting the tonal differences in the base colour realistic. You can check out the decals on http://www.uschivdr.com/

That's interesting. I considered doing something similar on what I'm sure is the same kit. I photographed loads of wood such as kitchen furniture and bookshelves, anything that appeared to have a fine wood grain. The idea was to print it on decal sheet and cut it into panels the same as you have.
Never got any further than the photo's, flogged the kit to a chap that lives in Germany and started building ships instead.

Hi Kiteman,
Don't worry about the subs they are not due until March, and Dave M has already sorted them, so forget about it.
Onto the build, cracking stuff Kiteman, it is coming along a treat. I love the natural wood effect, something I've always admired yet never achieved. Well Done, Sir!

Look forward to seeing more.

Well, when he says "forget about it", that don't mean you DON'T owe me £12.00!!!

Anyhow, I'm back at last.  Nice to get chance to catch up on here and I'm liking this kit!  Looking forward to seeing more.  How did you find working with the wood grain decals after that kerfuffle you had with the lozenge decal that time?

These decals are a whole different quality than those I experienced on the Brandenburg W29 (old model again). They are easy to handle and go on a treat. I do recommend the stuff von Uschi van der Rosten. It isn`t cheap but it is quality, and make modelling a pleasure.
ps....you will get your 12 quid back.
