If you were at Telford you may have noticed that I dug deep and purchased a resin casting starter set.
I was going to make a two part mould but chickened out. So here is my first efforts at casting a wheel from a simple one part mould.
Maybe a two part next time.
The photo shows the mould and the casting.

Speechless!
That's not like you!
There are no limits!!
Only the depth of my pockets.
And they're very deep, to the point where it's sometimes difficult to extract cash!
I know a few people who have deep pockets and very short arms!
I have now cast 4 wheels and they will be for a model T Ford of some kind, they are a bit flat on the rear but the details seems ok.
I am tempted to attempt a two part mould on a wheel but just need to work up the courage to have a go.
hey, you know what they say..just do it!
Well I have just started the two part process, master is embedded in plasticene and the moulding rubber poured onto it. it may take some time to cure.
I will try to be patient.
Hi Dave,
Looks like you've 'mastered the art' of casting. Be very interested to see how your two part moulding comes along.
Lead the way young Sir!
Bigkev
So will I, part one is curing.
Patients?
I can drop off a few if your short of them.
Bigkev
Did I mean patience?
Silly question but is the master scratch- built or a plastic component? Don't forget I have access to bits and pieces that may come in useful.
Haddock.
It is a plastic component this time for speed, but hopefully will be homemade in future.
Can I have access to your little bits and pieces?
What are they?
dowels, taper-pins, various steel balls, all sorts, what do you need? I could get some casting boxes done but not real quick. Got a box of assorted shim, brass and steel, a few different sizes, can be cut with scissors, all stuff that could come in useful with a bit of imagination.
Haddock.
Well, that's me out then, imagination, not a lot of that about.
Thanks for the offer, will let you know.
My two parts mould has gone _ _ _ _ up. The master detached itself from the bottom mould and is floating on top of the second upper mould. Will endeavour to do better next time.
Well at the risk of going up in smoke here is my second attempt at casting a two part mould.
I bought some generic Lego from Wilko - you get a tub full for £3.50.
The pictures show the master in the mould and then the second is the moulding rubber on top.
It is now a case of waiting 24 hours and then seeing how it has gone.

Going up in smoke??
Are you 'Allibongo' in disguise??
Bigkev
Interesting stuff though, that casting Malarky
Well, things are not going too well, the weather seems to alter the curing rate and my mould barriers are not fluid tight, just having to wait for a bit longer.
Here it is with a few problems, I cracked the mould and then attempted to cast from it. My air oulet needs to be a bit larger I think the resin only filled half the mould.
It has been a really interesting process and I can say that it has inspired me to do better.
Watch this space.

If at first you don`t succeed........... Keep going I am allready very impressed!
I have enlarged the air hole and will attempt another cast.
This is the latest, needs cleaning up, getting better but not there yet.
I need to watch those air holes.

Yep, holes of nothing are worthless!!
Though 'Polo's' did well.........................
Bigkev
Don't you think that's a 'mint' of an idea?
Must be very satisfying to see the learning curve getting steeper. Impressive!
Haddock.
Frustrating as well.
Another cast from the two part mould.
Getting better.
The second picture is a one part mould for some wheels for my next project.
In this case the wheels were scratch built from plastic card, rod and so on.
Front wheel, and the two rear ones. The casts are green and straight from the mould. They need cleaning up.
It probably takes longer to make one of each and cast them than it would to make them all from scratch. I am trying to think ahead (dangerous) for projects in the distant future.
I did make them flat at the bottom on purpose before you ask.

Well, it is getting better, all the wheels for the Model T Fords were cast this way and the wheels for the next project are all done, I now need to build the vehicle.
looking good !
Before I went away I set up some masters and poured some rubber compound around them, they take a while to cure. On arriving back home - 3 days, the mould has just about cured, I think the rubber has gone off a little?
Anyway I then mixed some resin, here are the masters and the result. I do need to clean them up and so on.

they seem to have worked well. Well done for perseviering!
Nice. I imagine it would have taken you more than 3 days to scratch-build the wheels?
Maybe not, but I was away anyway, casting takes about 40 minutes from pouring to removal of the casting. So it is quicker really.
Can you cast more than one item from a given mould??
Yes, that is the point, you can cast quite a lot, I have cast three rear wheels and front wheels so far. there will be a finite limit but I do not know what it is.
Here we are I have so far cast 2 front and 4 rear wheels - the rear ones will be double.
The masters are here as well.
