If you look closely, you can see subtle differences between the two ships!!

Hi Haddock,

Yes, I can see ones longer than the other, or is it because its nearer the camera?

You can call me 'Pike'

That's not subtle.

Here they are together, holding hands. Both not quite finished and need some water, these are just temporary bases so I can move 'em without touching the model.
I was considering mounting them both on the same base but I think separate bases would be more appropriate. Comments.
Just for Zak, Ringo is Wolf grey and Field blue, Susan is Ghost grey and French mirage blue!

maybe a nice little diorama where they are moored up together. Romantic like.  Nice work once again!

A decision has been made. After much soul-searching, I've decided on two separate bases, both ships at sea and under-way. I'm not fond of ships in harbour and even less sat on brass pillars, you never see them like that, they only come alive when they go to sea.
If I did do some sort of a diorama, ships under way would need a huge base, any-thing less than a ships length apart is generally to be avoided. A dock-yard type diorama would involve cranes, vehicles, buildings and probably lots of people so I've chickened out.
Might do one in 1:700 scale some day. Perhaps a Battle-ship and some destroyers, lots of little boats sculling around. White Ensign do some nice little armed trawlers in resin at that scale, quite cheap too for a resin kit.

Now I have to make some wooden bases, as a joiner, I make a good blacksmith. Junior hacksaw and engineers file ain't the best tools for wood.

Too big to go in the oven so can't bake the clay, got to use a different method, cross between Suvorov and Roberts.

You'll just have to come up with a reason to buy Mrs Beesting a new oven.

What about holding Our Christmas bash at 'Haddock's'?

A new oven to cope with us lot would be ideal............................

Here's a base in progress, I'm making  two identical ones.
Went up to what used to be Brid Timber on North-back Lane to see what was available, a very kind chap gave me a lump of 6mm MDF, refused to accept any cash, there's enough for another six bases this size. The square bits came from Croppers, 3mm square and 9.5mm square,it's tree wood.
They're stuck together with "sticks like sh*t"(courtesy of my next door neighbour) honest, that's what it says on the tube, it also says"trade only" so it must contain Kryptonite or summat. This must be the first bit of unsupervised joinery I have done since I made a magazine rack at school, probably 60 years ago.

Plastic wood.

Judging by some of the plonkers that I have had to deal with in my working life, there must be "brain wood" as well!. Some were that wooden it was unbelievable.

I'm pleased it was fer nowt, it goes against the grain to spend cash without good reason.

This looks really horrible at the moment, hopefully, it should look better with patience, good luck and more applications of Mod Podge and paint.

Trouble is,it dries clear and you can't really see the shape that you've put on. A coat of thin paint then more "stuff" starts to bring it to life........if your'e lucky. Just keep shoving it around till you like what you see.. Takes 2-3 hrs to dry between coats.

What is this "stuff" that you use.?For the sea on the Victory I used plaster on a polystyrene base.
Title: Re: Ringo and Susan
Post by: Haddock on November 24, 2014, 11:48:50 PM
The "stuff" is "Mod Podge Lustre". It's an American product, looks like PVA and is about the same consistency so you can't build it up into waves, more like ripples as you would see on a fine windless day (not many of them in the North Sea). It's really just a case of glooping it on with a brush and hoping it dries lumpy, there is a bit of a knack to it. You can give an impression of depth by putting a few thin coats on then a coat of thin paint then more "stuff"in a thick coat. haven't mastered it yet, it's  only the second time I've used it so I might get better with practice.
Scrub the 2-3 hrs drying time, I put a thick lumpy coat on yesterday and it needs a good 24 hrs although thin coats don't take long. It dries crystal clear, nearly too glossy to look realistic.
Not expensive, between £6 - £7 in the UK. That would do probably 4 bases the size I'm doing  now, if put on 2-3mm thick. I used it on HMS Roberts.
Haddock.
Try Googling it and see what you come up with.

I'm pleased we've stopped that silly conversation regarding wood. It was getting to the point where I couldn't see the wood for trees, in fact, I was seriously thinking of packing a trunk and branching out to form my own splinter group.
