As the sidetracked post got sidetracked into dioramas, I thought I should move on.
I have a diorama in mind but it depends on the club night tonight.
So that is on hold.
At the Northern Model Show I bought a Hobby Boss Huey and thought something in Vietnam would be appropriate. After talking to Chris at the Committee meeting, I thought that I would make a start.
A UH-1C as a gunship, is it a Frog or a Hog?
Certainly not a slick.
You're quick!
It's a hog.
Will we see a 'Slick Huey' in due course?
Perhaps you might even consider a Chinook, and a Skycrane.
Kevin
Not a slick yet, but an M84 from Italeri, again 1:72.
Decalled, weathering and a matt varnish to follow.
Grand.
looking good Zak.
Looking great - how many models/figures will be in the finished diorama

At least 2 vehicles and maybe a couple of helicopters, a paddy field and so on..............
Here is the M48, the Vietnam soil was very red, or so I believe!
An Italeri 1:72 M113.
Still to be weathered.
Meanwhile, I have started on an Italeri 1:72 Bell Uh-1D Iroquois, yes, A Slick.
I bought a CMK UH-1 Helicopter Crew. After building and painting the interior, it was a real problem to get the crew to fit.
Some serious carving and trimming of the crew and the interior was required, I eventually got them in, but a bit of a tight squeeze.
Wow this is quick, they are looking good, I want to see the paddy field.

At least they will be cosy together.......
Did you give them the Right Guard treatment first......?

No they are used to the smell!
Odour Modeller!!!!!
Looking very nice Dave. I also had a similar issue with the CMK figures.

Maybe they are oversize?
Door gunners added, with some dubious looking guns, until I find something more in keeping!
I found this quite a challenge!
Looking pretty good Dave.
I expect next time I see you - you will be hummmmming the "Ride of the Valkyries" hohohhohoho
Maybe, but it will only be to ride the surf!
We will talk over Vietnam on bacon butty day
Onwards and upwards, a slight Irish flavour to the diorama.
Yes, it is a Paddy field!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looking forward to this.
Some colour added.
I have been making Palm style trees from paper.
The trunk is a paper tube and the leaves were printed and then cut out,
Then some paint added.
Awesome!
Looking very good Dave.
Great model under construction - love the palm trees. I use wine bottle tops to make banana plants but think yours are excellent. :) :) :) :)
I think I have applied the Mod Podge a bit thick and it is slowly curing.
In the meantime I will progress with board 1 and 3, the Paddy field is board 2.
A large diorama then?
BUT what will be the final size ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Who knows?
Time will tell.
Thoughts and pondering on the make up of the next board,
Vietcong village maybe?
How about a river and some swift boats at speed - and don't forget the Shell tanker delivering aviation fuel ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

See below, I think a shell tanker would be a bit big in 1/72 scale.
There would be room for a further board with a bit of river and maybe a Pibber?
That would be interesting and unique.
Never seen a small scale pibber in a diorama.
Watching with interest.
Nice work.
Kevin
Adding some rice(?).
Looking very nice Dave.
The village looks pretty good.
You still on steroids - the rate you're going.

Speed maybe!
More progress, too hot to be outside or work down the allotment!
Nice.
Like the prop wash on the rice paddy fields, good attention to detail.
Kevin
Very nice indeed. I agree with Kevin - nice rotor wash on the paddy.
The three planned boards are now all started, the fourth may be added at the RHS and have the river on it, I am no sure yet, I would have to source a Pibber from Mach2 for the scene.
Lots more scenic work to do yet.
You're creating a whole scene. Looking great.
NO Chris he is creating the whole of Vietnam, well at least the southern section ::) ::) ::) ::)
He'll probably end up doing the whole length of the Ho-Chi-Minh trail........
Gonna need a bigger table.
Kevin
What about Charlie's tunnels under the village. Any thoughts on that?

I wonder who that could be?
Helicopter attack!
Very nice Dave.
Plenty of action in this diorama.
Nice work.
Kevin
Door gunners added to the flying helicopter.
Some scratch building required.
They certainly look like they mean business!
Kevin
The first board is just about complete, a few soldiers added, there may be more, time will tell.
Now which board next?
Well its the Vietcong Village board with a shoreline, I have been adding some sandbagged areas made from DAS modelling clay, a partially shattered tree and some shell holes.
Excellent diorama in progress Dave. I wouldn't want to tangle with the door gunners. Looking forward to completion.
Hi Dave,
Are the Viet Cong Huts scratchbuilt? they look very good.
Kevin

No they came as part of an Italeri Battle set and are laser cut mdf.
They are produced by Sarissa Precision in a variety of scales mainly for wargamers, the same company also do Pegasus bridge and other well known battle field scenarios.
They fit together well.
I have enhanced the roof and some other parts.
I now need some foliage, maybe the dreaded elephant grass and some Vietcong to populate the diorama.
It seems to be getting a bit crowded, but I suppose selective compression does that.
Tunnel rats will be here - just for Martin, no Zombies though it may be Legend! (will he get the reference!)
Could be "The legend of the 7 golden vampires" - a kung fu/vampire movie that made me laugh out loud
The diorama is going to be full.

I am Legend - Zombies, Will Smith movie!
Now adding some grass, several more layers are required yet.
The masking tape stops the road/track/path getting grassed!
Looking GREAT - when do you do the other 17 sections ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
I had forgoten all about the Will Smith film - sad ending for him but good for the other peole that had survived the outbreak. Loved the animals and plants taking over the city - got me thinking about a model - NO MUST finish ALL the ones under construction first, but maybe soon, now who shall I model the mad out of control zombie on ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Very nice indeed Dave. Displaying tomorrow?

No Castle and trebuchet tomorrow!
Wet days do wonders for modelling progress.
Some foliage and figures added, more to go, yes, figures and foliage!
Very nice indeed. It'll be fantastic when complete.
Adding some smaller details, packs, crates, barrels, plates and so on, the question is when to stop!
Oh, that's an attempt to build a sampan from paper.
sampan looks OK BUT what about the Shell tanker - hohhohohohho
Very nice Dave. Lots of great detail.
Looking excellent Dave.

Sorry, otherwise engaged watching grandson playing football at Wolves and Walsall.
The trip down the M1 was a nightmare, as was the trip to Manchester to take the Aussies back for their flight. I am beginning to think we live on one big car park!
Next week we are entertaining our granddaughters.
Remind me what modelling is!

On the Model day, I started the Mach 2 PBr and what a kit...................................
Least said soonest mended, but it is the only offering in 1:72 as far as I am aware.
More flash, holes and missing, badly moulded parts.
I managed to clean some of it up and waterline the hull.
It is now back in the box while I continue with the rest of the diorama.
More of the Pibber.

Looking nice, I?ll sent you the article we spoke about on Sunday.

No doubt you'll show it who's boss, either that or it will get stranded on a beach with battle damage?
I have eventually got back to some modelling, the back base has been grassed and I am now making more trees.
You might notice the small opening in the grass for a tunnel entrance.
Planning / Thoughts on the layout.
There's a lot of thought going into this. It's going to br one massive diorama.
It will be 4, 1ft x 1ft boards that all fit together.
Don't forget the other 6 boards for the Shell tanker ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
You have to find me a small Shell tanker, or plans or photos, did they run small ones up rivers?
Just for Chris, here are the 3 boards together.
Eventually there will be 4, the river to be added to the right.
Italeri watchtower - built and painted and dry brushed, this sits on top of the hill.
Quote from: zak on August 17, 2024, 08:40:05 AMYou have to find me a small Shell tanker, or plans or photos, did they run small ones up rivers?
Small - Shell H boats only 18,000 tons not like the last ones I sailed on 330,000 tons - I am shure you could fit one in - hohohohho
The diorama is coming along nicely. Ready for the next club meeting?

A little more progress, in between digging potatoes and allotmenteering!
The hillside looks effective. It's going to be good.

The scenic work continues, DAS clay sandbags.
The M113 is a resin printed item, awaiting painting.
Another masterpiece
Forward Supply base.
Coming together at a pace.
Going to be a very impressive diorama.
Think you will need to stack these up to save space.
Kevin

certainly, it is all getting out of hand - as usual.
The back board is just about complete.
The Vietcong have been tunnelling under the US base.
LOOKING great - don't forget things like "Bac Ho se chien thang" uncle Ho will win painted on the walls/fence/etc
Yes I had looked up comments to go on the French long dock model - so I have also got "tieng Phapra" and "nguoi Phap ve nha" if the comp is correct that should be French out and French go home - or it could be something else instead - blame google
Three boards, side view.
That's some mammoth diorama Dave and very busy too. Excellent.
River scene

I may have to moderate you!!!!!
HoHoHoHoHo
Was thinking if you did a Shell "H" boat it would only be 2.36m long - this was the ship I went up to Saigon in.
If you decided to do a Shell "L" boat - one of my later ships it would only be 4.88m long - the speed you go it should be finished by Christmas yohoyohoyoho
I knew Martin would ask about the tanker. Fibber looking good.

Back to battling with the Mach 2 Pibber.
Well the parts are really badly formed and a lot of fettling and scratch building will be needed, as well as filler.

First layer of water added, Mod Podge, it takes a while to dry.
Good looking water

Looks like you've been very busy whilst I've been sunning myself in Anfield and Liverpool (birthday present). Great work.
Aborted attempt at having a crashed Huey in the river, it did not look right and so I abandoned the attempt.
Pibber undercoated and the first coat of paint applied.
Looking great but still no tanker hohohho
Tank you too!
The diorama is looking great Dave.
Waiting for the water to cure, it seems to take forever.
Meanwhile on with the tanker - in your dreams Martin!!!!!
Ohhhhh you had me going - hohhoho - :'( :'( :'( :'(
Thought you might make a road tanker with Shell on the side overturned into a paddy field - maybe just toooooo keep me quiet ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
Shoreline added at the other side, initial ground cover, some dark green stuff left over from something.
Next some longer grass/foliage, when this is dry.
The water is certainly looking good.
Just the foliage to complete and then this is about finished.
Maybe a couple more figures.
I think you need to enter this in the diorama competitions at one of the shows we go to.
The whole model.
