I decided that the next part of my railway inspired modelling needed a larger building.
This is the front of what will hopefully become an engine house.
This will hold a large beam engine for pumping large volumes of water.
The basic shell is foam board covered with individual bricks laid in an English bond.
This has yet to have windows and other detail added.
The second picture shows the start of the beam engine.
Flywheel and beam, all from card.
I coat/soak the card in French Polish, it can then be sanded.
Thanks for the info about French polish - another skill to learn and put into action. It looks good at the moment will follow with interest
The original idea was to use the Airfix Beam engine, but I couldn't find one anywhere online.
I don't suppose anyone has one going cheap!
I really do like the brickwork Dave - excellent.
I there no end to your talents?
I think beam engines go "puff puff" slowly, not cheap.
Haddock.

A bit like you in your smoking days?
Adding the mortar wash accentuates the brickwork.
Windows under construction, again from cereal packets.
You've got some patience Dave!
Bet He's got shares in 'Kellogg's' too.....

No, just a serial(cereal) modeller!
I will NOT go down the line of a "cereal killer" - but that's what you do when we try and keep up with your speed or skills.
I need to eat my cereals faster to keep up.
Fruit and Fibre mainly.
More progress.
Wow!! and double wow!!!
Wow, that is amazing.
All I got out of cereal packets was those little plastic gifts.
Respect for the master of cardboard building.
Bigkev
I did find the Airfix Beam Engine on line and bought it for £20.00 including postage - from Triang Man. He also had lots of stuff from my youth for sale, I wasn't too tempted but the memories of Triang railways and Minic Motorways flooded back.
You'll be cracking on with that then?

I might bring it along on Sunday, too busy bricklaying at the moment.

Nothing stuck together as yet.
Roofing.
Scored, thin card strips to represent large slates on a heavier card underframe.
I sorted through my paints, looking for grey/ slate grey - here are all the greys that I found - i have not included the Tamiya here.
37 I think.
I bet Haddock has more shade of grey, maybe Chris too,
Just had a count up, I make it 28 but I haven't counted Lifecolour or AK Interactive naval colours. Some look more like light blue, some of the blues are really grey and some greens could be grey.
I've now ignore the name on the bottle and just look at my paint chips and their numbers.
Don't get me going about Naval colours, it's a minefield.
Haddock.
I have 27 just in the Mr Hobby paints. Like Haddock there are some blus and greens that are close. I have not gone through the Humbrol enamels.
The chimney under construction.
I see you are going up in the world -hoho

I may reach your level soon!
No way - you are well past the bottom rung - hohoho
More brickwork, I am unhappy with the extension at the rear so may change it.
Looks good though.
The roof looks like WWI lozenge camo. Another great build coming together.
I need to look at the slate colours again, far too much contrast there.
Meanwhile, a new extension added at the rear.
Give it a grey wash to blend them all together - or is that like teaching granny to suck eggs - hohohoho
Here is my patent chimney painting jig - well, ok, its a bit of wood clamped to my modelling table.
If it make life easier then its a hit with me - seeing as its patented, do I have to pay you and how much, to use this idea - hohohoho
A chair with TWO cushions, is that a sign of old age?
Haddock.
No Haddock you are wrong - its so he is higher up than us and can look down on us poor mortals - hohohoh - think its another clip round the ear on Wed night for me.

Only the one?
You need to"PILE" them up.
Ha, ha.
Too much sitting around.
Roof colours toned down.
How ?
Used the airbrush to mist over light grey.

Used the airbrush to mist over light grey.
That worked well.
Yes I agree with Chris - much improved
Yep, a lot easier on the eye.
Gutters and down pipes added to the front.Just a few bricks to tidy up.
Gutters and down pipes need another coat of paint.
Chimney painted, need weathering.
I think you've created another genre.

Do we have to call him Dr Frankenstein now ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
Chimney nearing completion, just down spouts to add.
Then it will be onto the interior and the beam engine.
Have a look at this website and videos, lots of great scratch building and other stuff, even some thoughts about what to do with completed models.
http://www.davesmodelworkshop.com/
Here is the Airfix beam engine.
Built, but nothing glued as yet, painting next and possibly some improvements.
It's all looking rather excellent. Your brickwork looks fantastic.
Inside and outside will be excellent
Will it sort of work or just a static model?

Will it sort of work or just a static model?
I am hoping to get it to work, only time will tell.
I have a suitable motor.
Well built and painted, fine details still to paint, it works, now onto motorising it.
Looks the business.

Motorised
Click on the above, it should work, if you then press the play icon. Or just cluck on the picture.
Two things Zak - great to see it moving but sounds like you have a bearing on the way out - hohohohho
Second thing i followed your instructions and CLUCKED on the picture, I clucked like all the chickens I have heard but it did nothing - hohoho - think you hit the U key next to the I key - hohohohooh or even cluckcluckcluck - I know I will pay for this on Wed evening.

Cluck, Oh no, chicken brain strikes again.
Many beam engines had a walkway around the beam to allow for oiling and maintenance.
This is from card, straws and wire, a bit of tweaking is still needed. It will have to be removeable so I can get to the working parts.
I am not sure how much will be visible with the building on top?
I need to think about pipework, valves and gauges.
Amazing stuff.
I take it the flywheel is running on brass bearings, not plastic to plastic.
Haddock.

Haddock.
No, plastic at present, but with molybdenum grease in.
Had a slight mishap, the chickens were really clucking - well some similar sounding words.
The Repair Shop is now open.
Wow, that is an amazing build.
I could hear the chickens clearly in Driffield.
look forward to seeing it close up.
Cheers,
Bigkev
Repaired, but the wires need more straightening.
Amazing!
Painting and adding a detail or two.
Looking great love the paint detail on the floor.
Great work, as ever. Throw some grease and dirt at it and it could be the real thing!!
Looking very realistic Dave.
Thanks for the comments.
More details added, it seems to go on and on.
Just about visible through the window.
The beam engine is about finished,
The building is complete.
I need to add the wiring for the lights and the motor.
Then I need to make a base for it all the sit on. The building will have to be removeable.
Stunning!!
Thank you.
The figures finish it off.
A model to be rightly proud of.
Bigkev
Magnficent work. This could give Howard a run for his money in the Xmas Competition, lol!!!!
Busy adding some paths and electrostatic grass, I now need to unwarp the baseboard.
Photos after a straightening session.
Busy painting underneath the base to try and straighten it.
I am not happy with the card and ohp film windows, I may build something similar again and make proper windows.
Bridlington Water Works could be a possible candidate, but I can find very little about it.
Finished!
Excellent Dave.
Excellent as always
Better window construction using plastic sheet and self cut strips.
The half circle was moulded using boiling water.
very difficult not to mark the glazing, but will endeavour to do better.
One finished, many more to do.
Replacement windows eh? Double glazed?
Don't ask Chris - he will be round knocking at your door with a a great unbeatable price to sell you windows - hohohhoho

No not replacement, for the next build.
Bridlington Waterworks.
I remember as a small child being taken on a school trip to the waterworks, all I can recollect now is how clean everthing was and the huge black and white tiles on the floor.
Haddock.
Hi Zak,
Very nice work. Where was the Bridlington Waterworks?
Bigkev
Fantastic building.

As far as I can tell, it was up Mill Lane and the older maps suggest that there were two, They appear to have has reservoirs attached, but details are hard to find I may need to visit the library to see what i can unearth.
I was only going to represent the outside of the building.
The only picture I could find was here https://www.flickr.com/photos/erarchives/28662774101
I am going to use it to house a pumping engine. this will be a steam marine engine of the double oscillating type.
Top of Mill Lane, I delivered Sunday papers up there.
Haddock.

Thanks Haddock.
I am going to convert the Airfix Paddle Steam engine and fit a flywheel in place of the paddle wheel.
Another masterpiece in the future then - love the detailed research you do, it proper modelling
Should be good.
Truly proper modelling. AND you have managed to get another of the 'Museum' Airfix Kits.

Yes, this has been started so I will have to see how it goes.
