Had a day out yesterday to York - first time in about 16months.
Popped into Monk Bar and decided to get the "Call to Arms" set of figures of Roman infantry ( thought its only a small sale but hope it helps because of the shops being shut for so long).
The first few will be made as "Romans Nil - Barbarians One" -- looking at the figures they need a little work to remove some excess plastic joining arms and shield - but heyho it was only £5.50 for 16 figures
No doubt a Zombie Legion will be in the pipeline?
Had not thought of that but thanks for the idea Chris -- hohohohho
Hi Msea,
Lots of detail painting to keep you quiet with these.
What type of plastic are they moulded in? Hard or Polythene type?
I think the Walkington Legions will be making their presence felt.
Cheers,
Bigkev
Hi Kevin - they are a hard plastic, with good detail. Only problem is the way they have been made the shoulder and the shield has a large amount of extra plastic - but it will soon be removed along with the seam lines.
The set contains 4 sets of 4 different soldiers so could make them into 2 or 3 different dioramas - you know I like my history, so we will see what comes of this. If nothing else its another sale for Monk Bar Models and more for the shelf of shame in Walkington - hohohoho
I don't believe you have a shelf of shame Martin.
I'm sure you'll come up with a masterpiece.
Thanks Chris but I DO HAVE A SHELF OF SHAME - but every model I have made has given me some fun and enjoyment.
Its the making not the finished article for me - but if you ask Zak he will say I am strange at the best of times - hohohohho
Yes I agree Martin. I get the most enjoyment from the making of the model. It's icing on the cake if it looks good.
I too enjoy the making especially if there's some research/history in the mix.
I thought they were all of a polythene like material, soft plastic surely, thermosoftening, thought you taught technology.
There is hard plastic, soft plastic and very soft plastic - hohoho - its how it cuts and sands not what they say is in it or how it was made ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
Backdrop for the first of the Roman models now made - next job is making the base and the backwall to paste the poster on.
Shouldn't that be in Latin?
What did the Romans do for us?
Latins a bit rusty like a lot of my models - hohohho

As Zak will tell you - it takes me all my time to do English :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
I once tried removing seam lines on soft plastic with a heated pin as suggested. NEVER AGAIN!!!!
Being Grammar School educated, don't you know?, we had to study Latin for the first two years. The school motto was 'Labor ipse voluptas'. I'll leave that one with you. A clue. it wasn't most of the time!!!
Like you I did Latin for 2 years.
Labor Omnia Vincit.
None Sibi sed Mundo.
Especially for Haddock " Viva lampada Tradunt.
All mottos of one sort or another.

Sorry Chaps, its all Greek to me....

My school was approved - so no Latin
Found Latin to be most useful when riding out a force ten off the Norwegian coast.

Should it be "vitea lampada tradunt"?
I don't know, it was a guess.

I was trying to remember Haddock's old school motto and obviously got it wrong.
I am confused but I am most days - hohohho

Correct answer means you dodge the home, this time.
Bigkev
PS. If you don't succeed, I have arranged that my room is next to yours....!
I will bang on the wall to let you know I have arrived Kevin - hohohoho
Think I have just found Haddocks pen from his skoool skoll scole school days with the school motto on it - hohohoho
Base and back section made and painted black. Sign added to the back wall ( sorry for some of you but its not in Latin - supply your own version - hohoho) and now to work on the figures and the section of ground they will be on.
Looks good.
Start made on the second Romans model.
Four soldiers at the corners of the empire - not sure if they will be looking inward towards Rome or looking outwards and protecting the borders of the empire - decisions decisions decisions - hohohoho
Very artistic!!
No you lot are the martyrs for having to look at it - hohohoho
Did the figures succumb to an overdose of Greek yoghurt?

From about 100AD they should be lookinh inward... ...maybe.
Great idea.
Have tried them both ways Andy - looking inwards it just looks like 4 soldiers about to beat each other up - so its outward facing for the finished model.

I think this would be better.
Trial run with figures and rocks and then second photo is coat of filler and the rocks pressed in while still wet,
Looks good Martin.
Some block colour on the 4 Romans
Two templates made to get the eagle wings and unicorn horn on the shield design.
Next job is to paint them and hope they are symmetrical and look OK and pass the Zak test without bad comments
Two different gold colours added to the shied, next job is the copper edge on the shield and then the black or red markings to add to the gold sections after a coat of varnish.
So far so good Martin.

Looks like the test has been passed, but you must always try harder!
Thank you teacher - hohohho
The other 4 Romans have now been painted bronze, when dry will be mounted on the corners of the map of the Roman Empire.
Looking good.
Hi Msea,
When you bring this to the next club meeting, will you be wearing full Roman Gladiator Uniform??
Only asked because you seem to like to dress like 'Magnum' on most club meetings!
Ooops, bet I am in detention now.........

2 horse power or 4?
4 Chris - need the power to keep ahead of the rabble - hohohho
Romans on duty guarding the frontier of the empire
Very ROMAN (tic).
They look a little brassed off to me - even thou I used bronze paint - hohoho
Bit more work done on the other Romans. Next job finish the colour on the base and remove the soldiers for small detail painting such as the scutum, cingulum militare, pugio and gladius (that's shield, belt, dagger and sword to you lot - hohohohho)
Excellent Martin!
Thanks Chris.
Each soldier carried 2 wood pickets to help protect the camp, this has been made from 2.5 mm square acrylic.

Don't forget the yoke to carry all their personal gear as well.
I have a list of things to make and scatter around the model including a banner with a wild boar on it - but thanks for thinking about what I could make.
Very imaginative Martin. Looking forward to see it finished.
This should be interesting once it all comes together.
Rocks dry brushed with lighter shades and first layer of grass added.
Very scenic.
Just going for FOOD - have done some more work on the figures and even added the studs to the boots, or should that be studs to the caliga to keep you Latin speakers happy ::) ::) ::)
Actually it's caligulae!
In my book it said caliga and that was a "military boot" - but I don't even do English.
Romans added to the base - when solid will start to make and then add the bits and bobs
Looking good Martin.
We are both right with the latin.
Thanks Chris its good to get something correct with words - now we just have to tell teacher Zak that I have done something right and wait for his reply - hohohhoho
He'll probably come up with some ditty ho ho ho .
While waiting for Zaks ditty, some ideas for the shields.
Top row the disc cut from thin aluminium, and a hole cut in some paper/card. Middle row paper fastened to disc and bottom row paper cut at the edges of the disc.
Works OK but will have to make a lot to be able to choose the best, and will also try and think of another way to do it. Might try and fasten a bit of solder around the disc edge and see how that goes - suppose I could just paint a ring on the risc edge but would be best if it has a slightly 3D effect

Outwards for me!
Fantastic!!!
Well done!
Painting on shields looks great!
Twentieth Legion flag made - when dry will bend and crumple a bit then add to the defeated Romans
A couple of francisca thats just for you Chris --- the rest of you that is throwing axe for the Frankish warriors, next job paint the metal head and wooden handle.
Some more bits added to the model - now working on a couple of Celtic type shields.
I like your ideas Martin. Great result.
Very bloodthirsty!!
Celtic spears and shields added
Gore......!!
It looks fantastic.
Cheers,
Bigkev
Yes, excellent Martin.
