Its not my fault - blame Chris. He mentioned about the Roman army using pigs in battle, so that got me looking and finding out about the use/possible use of this ( will not go into details as I know some of the group are a little bit squeamish - hoho )
Now how does this get me onto the next model I can hear some of you say - well when I was young, one of the poems my dad used to tell me was about Horatius the Roman soldier, on the bridge fighting the Etrustcan army, and you know Chris always asks if any zombies in my new projects.
So when reading an article in the new Fantasy Figures International magazine I liked the post apocalypse era one showing a person in a gas mask with 2 children in masks and sussing out a shopping centre. Decided to blend the poem and the article and use figures I already have - so it will be a shopping centre with the steps filled with rubbish and 3 people guarding them, to stop zombies ( so Chris will be happy ) from gaining access to the upper level. So upper level reasonable clean and tidy with the lower level trashed, also I can start making the things for the lower level and blockading object on the stairs as I am working on the other models I have going at the moment. Things to scratch build broken into and empty vending machines, step ladders, supermarket trolleys, crash barriers, sack barrows and anything else that comes to mind - suggestions always welcome. Also Horatius was nicknamed Cyclops because he had lost an eye in battle so must remember to give one of the figures an eye patch.
Oh no, not again, here we go. (Only being ironic - can't spell sarcastic)
You mean skarcasttic sarkastik sarcastick ever so strange - hohohoho
This should be interesting. I bet the rubbish will be great. Looking forward to it.
Thanks for the comments - will try an live up to expectations.
Jig made to bend the outer bar for the crash barriers, small jig is to hold the internal bars in place while they are soldered to the outer frame - that's the idea at the moment we will see how it goes.
Have you seen that ICM do sets of figures from Chernobyl in 1/35 scale? The latest one is 'Rubble Clearers' That should give you something else to play with!!! Oh, and the correct term is Armco barriers, pedantic as ever, lol!!!
Because YOU are a rivet counter Chris you have Armco barriers - BUT you forget that this model is in the future and after the apocalypse and its mine, so they are crash barriers.
One "CRASH BARRIER" finished - just needs a little cleaning up and then prime and RUST.
Hi Msea,
A nice futuristic 'Crash Barrier'.
See, I can say nice things.....
Bigkev
Thank you Kevin - at least you know what they are called - hohohohhohoho
I thought Armco barriers were those strips of corrugated steel that were installed on motorways usually on the central reservation to prevent you crossing over into oncoming traffic.
Haddock
Good barriers Martin.
You're right Haddock they are, that's where I thought he was going with this, silly me!!! So we're both right MSea :p
First coat of hull red and then some Town and Country Scenics Rust-it! Will give a rust wash later, but now onto making some more and the base.
Just back from the doghouse - both floors, back wall for shops and the start of the steps done - its all drying at the moment, not like the weather its chucking it down outside. Just looking at it think I will alter the profile of the handrails when its dry and solid.
Intriguing!
Can't wait for this one Martin.

Excellent. Don't forget the little hooks that link them together... Andy.
Pattern marked into the bottom floor of the shopping center and a coat of black for the grouting. Started to pick out the individual floor tiles in mustard and red for the cross pattern, when finished will give a good coat of "muck"
Some more colour on the floor.
Tartan floor!
Its Howards fault - ho ho. Don't worry when it has been good and mucked up and covered with rubbish you will not see a lot of it.
Just about to give it a coat of pledge and noticed the pattern is wrong - did you not notice or were you being kind and not mentioning it to me - hohohho
As we have no idea what's in your head how could we tell!
How cruel you are Chris, but very true. If you look at the photo above you will see they have 3 mustard squares between the red ones, so the 3 part squares on the left hand side should be red - will sort it out later.
Tartan floor finished and a first coat of white paint on the upper floor and stairs.
The stair sections are a bit of thick card marked and scored on alternate sides , so it bends to the correct position. Then some balsa blocks to keep the 90 degree angle and a section of coffee stick to hold the block rigid. Will see how this goes and if not will try a third method - before you ask the first method was to score a section of plastic and bend to shape - they just cracked at the bends.
Card steps added
Steps look like a success Martin.
Thanks Chris they look the part and are good and solid, with not a lot of work involved in the making of them.
Great skills.
Are you fitting a carpet?
Andy.
No carpet Andy just lots of rubbish and crash barriers
First coat colour on the upstairs floor.
Very colourful,
Trial run for making breeze blocks
Explain how you made them please.
The breeze block was the correct scale size but it just looked wrong, so have scaled it up a little and I am now happy with it - rivet counters say your worse.
Its just a block of insulation foam with 2 holes drilled into it, it was so soft they just pushed through more than drilling. Then a square file used to get the shape of the internal holes and then the outside filed down to the correct size.
Just for you Zak - the photo shows from left to right the block, holes drilled. filed to inner shape and then filed to outer shape.
I think they will look very effective.
I love a bit of scratch building ingenuity, why buy something when you can make it.
Much more satisfying.

I 100% agree with you.
I'm amazed with what you come up with Martin.
Grand.
Thank you Chris - its easy when you are a tight Yorkshireman -- hohohohohho
Stands and panels made for the surround on the top floor.
First section fastened together
Very nice, just like a real shopping mal.
Thank you Zak.
Start made on the front of one of the shops, bricks and tiles painted, the inner part of the roller door made and distressed just the outer parts of the door to add.
Looking good Martin.
Looking good MSea. The diorama not you, lol!!!
Trial run with the parts placed together. Second photo is the 3 lower shop fronts under construction.
Coming along nicely.
Thanks Zak.
Have found this old Letraset "word positioning system" in the loft and have given it a go.
You put the Letraset on the paper as normal. then put this on the clear tape and damp it down, this transfers the letters onto the clear tape. You then remove the wet paper leaving the Letraset on the clear tape, and rub the whole words down as normal.
Useful stuff.
It was good for putting Letraset onto round surfaces - the strange things I have done in the past - hohohoho

Best not go there really.
NO best let sleeping dogs alone !!!!!!!!
First shop front finished just a bit of dirt and graffiti to add.
It's really good what you have done so far. The shopping mal is coming along nicely. Is Horatio at the top of the stairs?
No Horatio at the moment Chris looking through the stock to find the correct 3 figures to go at the top of the stairs.
Your making good progress with this one Msea.
Great skills,
Andy.
Some ideas for the Gin Palace window, with different colours and fonts.
The top is printed on paper and the bottom one is a trial on acetate, before you ask it did not work, my printer is not the type for this so will try and hand colour or just put the acetate on top of the printed sheet.
You can get Over head projector sheet that works with inkjet printers.
I've got some clear decal/ transfer/ sticker paper that takes
inkjet print, if that helps. That's if I can find it, of course!

Sorry for the reduced input - but I know you will not believe this BUT I HAVE BEEN BUSY.
Doing lots of jobs and other bits and bobs - now have a bit more time so am also making a vending machine that has been broken into and now has no food or drinks left, only empty packaging on the floor outside.
What; more rubbish on the floor!
You got it in one Chris
Outside and inside of the front cover for the vending machine - yes Haddock it is soldered at the corners to make it strong - we don't want the zombies to break in do we !!!!!!!
Now off to make the main part of the vending machine.
Nice bit of soldering, thought it was a cargo hatch for a minute, silly me!!
Hi Msea,
Great imaginative work, not doubt the lull in building was to recharge your creative juices.
Cheers,
Bigkev
Thanks Kevin but no, recharged the juices with RUM.
That's more like it Martin.
First photo shows the start of a wall mounted phone booth. Second one is the shop fronts under construction.

Great stuff,

Thanks Andy - bit more work done on the vending machine.
Where are the Twix and Mars bars, don't forget the Marathon, or Snickers, it depends on the date.
Or, at least an empty wrapper or two.
Brilliant vending machine Martin.
Thanks Chris - empty wrappers will be on the floor alongside a zombie or two.
Bet the curly wires taxed your patience. Oh I forgot, you don't do patience!!!
Glad you know my strengths Chris - hohohoho
Vending machine and telephone now in place.
Interesting signs Martin.

But after consideration, how can I punish you for telling the truth........
Love your warped sense of humour.

Looking good. Looking forward to the finished diorama.
Are the traffic cones going to be taken by the Zombies or just the idiots tipping out of the pubs at 10pm?
Nice headwear for a ZOMBIE!

WARNING
Those of a nervous disposition should STOP reading now.
We re-watched the first 2 of the "Matrix" films last night and in the second film Mr Smith the bad guy could reproduce himself and it ended up with hundreds of Mr Smiths. Now if that happened in real life just think about the consequences - not only hundreds of Smiths running around, but would the model industry be able to make enough models to keep him quiet, we would need a much larger web site to displace all his models and think of the amount of insults/hassle the general club members let alone the committee members would get. Now I have passed on my worries for the world think I will go and have a lie down or a large rum - hohohohoho - guess I will be getting another clip round the ear when we meet again

Yes, depends if you want to support the roof.
Very good - hohohoh - no roof will be made or fitted to this model. So which columns will look best, short or tall ?????
I think at the moment, I will go for the tall ones and this will also give me more space to fasten posters to them.

Otherwise another shopping centre on the horizon......with all their faults/omissions

Led Zeppelin, The Who, that's all I can remember.
Meatloaf, The Beatles(Sgt Pepper), The Animals and so on.
Great to see the Sex Pistols, but no Clash, Tom Waites or Warren Zevon, shame!!! We won't go into Klaatu, Rameses or The Hu or I'll lose you completely. The one next to the Sex Pistols looks like a mirror image of Bruce Springsteen's 'The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle'. Bob Marley?

The 3 figures are just from the stash and will be the 3 on the bridge ( must remember the eye patch) they are just cheap Airfix 1/32 scale modern Russian figures, more like kids toys rather than scale figures, but by the time I have mutilated them with my style of painting they will be OK (and the main thing is I have them now so don't have to send off for some and then WAIT)
And for the zombies?

Still trying to find figures that look like the club committee members - hohohohho
Three figures primed black from below and white from above
Progress. You'll have a bit more time now with lockdown 3.

I am intrigued to know how this works, I have read about using that idea.
It is supposed to show the shadow area more clearly - first time I have tried it, so will let you know my thoughts later.
I've not come across this before, wonder if it will work on 20mm? Interesting to see what you come up with.
Hi Msea,
An interesting paint concept, which I will watch with interest.
Cheers,
Bigkev
Most of the shopping center now finished - decided to get "she who must be obeyed" a Toblerone for Christmas, so I could steal the silver paper to go with the outer printed cover from the internet - so extra points for the pressy, chocolate for me to eat and stuff for the model all in one go ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
The 3 figures have now had some paint on them. Think it would have been best to use the air brush for the uniform colour, in very thin coats but my fingers are only just getting back into working order, so done with a brush, will try the black and white primer on another figure to try this method out again later.
Progress.
At last
Looking very good. Lots of rubbish too.
Cant wait to see your work in the flesh. ;D

You zombie you.
Back to finishing off a couple of half done models - the figures have had some more work done - next job is the faces (sorry Howard I do try my best) and then a few bits for the upper floor and another model to pack away till my room is done
Look ok to me!

Look ok to me!
That's because the photo is out of focus - hohohohho
How did you get on with spraying from top and bottom etc?
Not good Howard - my fingers playing me up at the time - so brush painted the figures instead of spray and i lost a lot of the effect i was after. Thinking about it , if i had used a lot of thinned down coats of brush painted coats it might have gone better - will try again on another figure.
Decided to try and make one of those old Chesterfield type sofas for Horatius Cocles to rest on.
It was some thick tube material (as show at the last club meeting) with a cross pattern scribed into it, when all the sections are fastened together, will add a button at each cross section with some PVA and then paint it old brown leather colour.
This is a blast from the past.
That's a good idea - if it doesn't work well I can blow it up and just have the bits as a damaged sofa - hohohoho

And have springs poking out?
Your thought patterns are getting very worrying Chris - you will soon be as bad as me - hohohohoh

I bow to the master.
Seat and arms fastened together and a new thicker back under construction. When all solid will fasten both sections together and then add the buttons and colour it.
Two sections fastened together and a start made on the buttons. The sections at the front are to be cut and added to the front of the arms and sides of the back sections.
Looks the part Martin.
Photos show a base coat of German camouflage black brown, then burnt umber stippled on top, then highlights of mahogany brown and then a wash of smoke to unify all the above shades.
Very comfy looking.
Speachless!
Comfortably brilliant!
Thanks all but think it could be improved - so will make another one on playday5 and relegate this one downstairs to the zombie floor.
Look forward to seeing Mk.II being made on Playday 5.

Me too.
New wood sections made for the Chesterfield sofa - the foam ones are OK but should be able to get the shape better with this lot - Sunday will tell :-\ :-\ :-\
Wood shape now finished and also some tin foil scored to add to this at the Playday
Tin foil sections glued to the outside of the arms and the end sections of the back - now they are dry and solid they have been cut till they wrap round the wood sections and then glued in place.
Progressing comfortably.....
Bigkev
Sofa finished at Playday 5 and now the buttons added with PVA - before somebody (that's you rivet counters ) tells me that I have missed some of the buttons, they will be added when the rest are dry and solid and I can tilt the sofa without the ones that have been done running into an oval shape.
When the PVA glue had dried it was flat and did not do the job - so have cut some small bits of plastic and fastened them in place instead.
Looks uncomfortable!
Yes very uncomfortable Chris - do you want one full size making for next Playday - hohohoh
Nah, I'll stick with what I've got. Ho ho ho ho
Base coat of German Comouflage Black Brown on the sofa
Just ready for the salvage hunters.
What a lovely shade of Brown!
Just need a wooden shed to go with it....

Still working on fixing damage done when models packed away to get my room re-done. The vending machine has now had its door replaced and the figures and sofa added to the top of the stairs and some touching up done on the damage to the breeze blocks. Now just need some non military figures to go on the top deck in front of the shops
Are you just finishing off old models or visiting the shelf of shame?
Both
