Well at last I have sorted out the photos so this is the workshop I am working on at the moment.
The base and sides are from MDF (that's medium density fibreboard to you lot )with acrylic windows. The sign above the door is built up with 4 layers of plastic to give a 3D effect on the hammer and sickle.

Looking Good Comrade!
So far, your verk is satisfactory, Ve shall not be sending you hof to de Salt Mines................Yet!
Kommisar Mankini BigKevisky
-
Ah, grand to see you online Martin and extra good to see the Russian Workshop project! The last meeting was a bit fast and furious so I only got chance to quickly snap the models for the newsletter in between events so missed on the chance to have a good look at your forge. I'm looking forward to seeing this come together.
-
Glad to see you have joined the on line group with photos.
Keep forging ahead.
-
Just had an idea !!!
Should I change the colour of Kommisar Mankini BigKevisky's mankini from yellow to red and place a hammer and sickle badge on the front ?????
Or would that definitely get me a trip to the salt mines if I post it on line ?
-
An image of the ROSTA window on the front wall. the printing plates made in Moscow and sent to different locations to be printed locally. They had political comments and most in the form of cartoons because a lot of the population
ilitttera illitera ilaterate could not read.
The posters on the inner wall I have tried to make some look like they had been up for a while, did it work I don't know but they look OK to me.

Yes, they certainly pass muster. It's coming on a real treat and those little details make all the difference. What scale are you working in?
-
Hi Wizzel its in 1/35 scale.
-
Its looking good Martin.
-
Looking good and good to see you online presenting sumat a bit different...a breath of fresh air. (not that the rest of us are stale) ;)
-
Fresh Blood is always welcome.
If Msea carries out his idea of colour change and embellishments, it will his blood...............................never mind the Salt Mines.
Joking apart, great work Martin, a super idea, with very nice original touches. Keep it up, its great to see something different.

Well Plan A is to put supported girders along each wall and run a gantry crane between them holding a small tank in the air - we will see how it goes.
The girder have detail 2mm nuts on the gusset plate and 3mm holding down nuts and bolts - Briggs and Powell in Beverley have a good range of small bits and bobs. Before anybody asks NO I DID NOT make a double ended stepped bolt and thread it 2mm for the bolts between the gusset plates - I leave that stuff for Tony - all I did was drill holes and push a small brass rod through and push the nuts over the ends.

Much as love gluing plastic kits together, there's something even more satisfying about diorama work and making summat out of nowt, this is great stuff Martin. Are your girders scratchbuilt too? If so, how did you do them, they're very effective either way and I continue to be inspired.

What/ who is/are they, I think I need to visit them
-
Well Wizzel the girders are not scratch built but bought from Croppers in Brid see photo. I sound like a salesman "get your nuts and bolts from Briggs and Powell"and "get your girders from Croppers"
You ask who are they Zak its a small old fashioned hardware store in Beverley in the square and they see to stock nuts and bolts down to 2mm unlike most other places.

-
Many thanks for that Martin.
-
Yes, many thanks Martin. As I say, inspiration has struck again so I may just pick up some girders in the near future.
Briggs and Powell is one of the few remaining shops in Beverley that was in business when I were a lad and for goodness knows how long before that too. It's a real shop with real stuff sold by real people. You'll find it just opposite the Market Cross on the other side of the road from where Akrill's gun shop used to be.
-
This is all terrific stuff......love it!
-
Decided to make some window grills - seen them on another model and liked them. Made a jig and superglued them together. If I did them again I think I would use the jig but solder them to give added strength - one came apart as I was fitting it to the window, also I would use thinner brass bar.

-
Very artistic.
-
...and a nice touch
-
Agreed. They really do set it off a treat. Will all the windows be done? There's an awful lot of them but it will be worth the work.
-
No just the side windows.
-
Well this is the main door and the side gate made, next job is to dirty them up and also to rust the girders.

-
Nice work Martin, very tidy.
Reminds me of my railway modelling and model building days.
-
I love the uneven planks too - very realistic. Is it based on an actual building or just from your imagination?
-
very nice work...I am enjoying this project, keep it coming.
-
Yes Wizzel its from my head - my head is full of very very very strange things !!!!
-
Yes Wizzel its from my head - my head is full of very very very strange things !!!!
I think we already knew that!
:)
-
Well a before and after shot of the girders, now they have been rusted up a bit - next a bit of muck and dust on the tops when I have a spare 5 mins.

-
Bear in mind I'm NOT an engineer, but I'm looking forward to seeing what purpose the bolts in those triangular supports serve. Happy to wait and see the thing come together or you can all tell me. I am enjoying seeing this take shape though Martin. Do you find it helps speed things up a bit when you have the pressure of keeping us waiting or is it just me that's like that?
-
Well the first bit of weathering on the tops of the girders - a before and after shot.
First time EVER using weathering powders so still a lot to learn. Think when all are fitted to the workshop another top coating of dust will be needed ?

-
Looking good, very clean work indeed...watch out Zak!
-
Yes, I will have to keep an eye on Martin. he will want to wear yellow soon I think!
-
Nobody wants to wear yellow!!! ;)
-
I would rather a red splinter group than wear yellow. HoHoHoHo
-
Well the next bit of kit is a forge. Since the comments at the club meeting about it needing coke and was not finished - I have added some painted cat liter - are you all happy now ????
-
Brain must be turning to mush as usual. I forgot to add the photos. That will give some people lots of opportunity to make comments.
Nearly hit the post button again before adding the photos.

-
Things hotting up then?
-
I'm really enjoying seeing this come together. Really good details Martin, I look forward to seeing the complete thing.
-
You sure are forging ahead with this one.
-
Forging ahead -- well the forge needs a blacksmith so here he is. He started life as an Academy "IDF Modern Infantry Set" figure with the uniform details carved off and an apron made from wine bottle metal top. Keeping to the club motto "it must be cheep" the set of 4 figures was reduced to £1 39.

I am very impressed with your attention to Detail. A very enjoyable project to see is this one.

Are you turning into a chicken Martin?
Cheep, cheep?
Looking good, I like the figure conversion.
Will you be adding any machine tools?
-
Is the blacksmiths name Luke?
-
You will see at the next club meeting, about chickens - cheep cheep cheep.
No his name is not Luke it's Black Bob - that was the name of the poor man who tried to teach me about forge work in the dim and distant past - and he failed miserably.
Next job painting the oil can to go onto the workbench.
-
Wasn't Black Bob a sheepdog?
-
WHY AREN'T YOU BUILDING A SHIP!!!!!
Haddock.
-
I am I am I am don't give me a hard time Haddock. The conversion of the modern oil tanker to my dads ship "British Pride" on the Arctic Convoy PQ8 is ongoing. Should I put that on line as well ??????
-
Why not!
-
I thought that Luke would fit better, then you could say "use the forge Luke"
-
Or "may the forge be with you".
-
I like " may the forge be with you" so the blacksmiths name is now LUKE. I think I am going as daft as the rest of you !!!!
-
Well now we have sorted out the blacksmiths name. This is the work bench, most of it is from the Tamiya kit "WW2 US Field Maintenance Yard."
Because me and Tony are engineers or should that be - Tony and I - he will complain that the bench is not dirty enough, so to keep him quiet, its to be dirtied up when I do the main and side doors.

-
I see no ships, only hardships!!
-
Hay Martin, that is a bench mark in modelling. Shall we call the vice squad? ;D
-
It need to be grubby, like all you engineers.
-
Steady !!!! >:(
-
Ignore him, he doesn't know any better!!
-
Oh yes I do, I have witnessed some in action and its not a pretty sight.
-
site.......sight? oh dear!!
-
Sorry an oversight on my part, corrected now though.
I will get detention now - sorry.
-
write 100 times, "this site is not an oversight" and then report to me when you`ve done it!
-

-
A few bits and bobs for our blacksmith Luke. ---" feel the bath Luke " ---- its cold, was the answer.

-
What is the water Bob?
-
Just painted filler with a couple of layers of Klear on top. Thought about putting a couple of sharks fins cutting the water but will save that for a ship model - ho ho ho.
-
Looking Good Martin,
Took you a while to show the light from under the bushel, but boy does it shine bright.
Great work, shows the great research you have done.
Brilliant.
Bigkev
-
Thanks Kev just trying to keep up with the rest of you.
Blacksmith Luke needed a rack for his holding tools and his light saber as well - I am getting as daft as the rest of you.
First attempt ally bar superglued - not very strong, so make a brass rack soldered together. The tools are brass bar flattened at the end and a box joint filed into them so they could be soldered and look the part.

-
Starting to look busy now, hurry up and get it done so you can get to work on the boat.
Haddock.
-
Looks like one of those metal puzzles I had as a kid.
-
Great work Martin.
-
I never get chance to see the models in much detail at meetings as I'm undertaking the rest of my duties so it's a real treat to see this come together. Stacks of detail Martin, Great work.
-
After 20 years as a marine engineer the main thing I learnt was that "if you can't fix it with a hammer its not fixable " so decided to make Luke some hammers and more forge tongs to keep him happy. Now for a couple of days working on the tanker to keep Haddock happy and make sure he doesn't shout at me !!!!

-
Keep bobbing along, Luke what you have done.
-
Lukeing good!
-
When I look at the models the rest of the group make it reminds me that I am only an HAMMERteur.
-
Luke here. Bob, stop messing around.
Do I really need to hammer home the point?
-
Now we have finished with the hammer jokes - I will bash on - This is the main door fitted, still needs a bit of finishing to the paintwork and walls.

-
Well, I'll be jamb-ed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
To be serious for a moment (if that's possible for you lot), Martin, I have in my possession a half full bottle of
E.M.A. plastic weld, If it helps you out, I can bring it on Tuesday night.
Haddock.
-
Thanks Haddock that would be great. now all I need is some of your skill.
-
Well the next set of figures are transferring oil from a drum to an large oil tank. The figures started life as Academy "German tank supplies and crew set." I have removed the uniform detail and added wine bottle top for the boiler suit legs - next job painting them ( I will have to improve my painting skills to keep up with Oli )

-
I forgot to ask Kiteman a question in the last post - my brain is going to mush its an age thing.
Well Kiteman you changed my blacksmiths name from Black Bob to Luke - so what are you going to call my next figure who is an Oxy-acetylene welder ???????
-
Sparky???
-
Ethylene
-
Torchy.....................
-
Hinges ready for the side door - when dry will fasten doors in place and sort out figures entering from the outside yard.
At the moment "she who must be obeyed" thinks Torchy is the best so far.

-
Oxy-Jean?
Archy?
Anarchist?
-
Well this is the man with no name (No he is not Clint Eastwood from the spaghetti westerns ) he is the oxy-acetylene welder. So have fun naming him !!!

-
Nice bottles......shame about the chain!
You should have consulted Haddock, the resident- links to the mm -expert.
-
it looks good Bob, keep up the good work and don't let our cheeky wise cracks put you off.
It is an inspired build, with lots of potential.
You are safe from the Salt Mines.................................for now Comrade!

-
How long have Zak and Haddock been members of the KGB ????
Your very own hit squad.
-
If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the forge!!
-
We have ways of making you behave.
-
That`s look so real.
Congratulations
-
Yep, that's looking fab.
-
Your minions might be low level KGB but I am high level KGB (see my card) so who has to behave now ???

-
Just to get you thinking more - was the card a "red herring" or just a HADDOCK ???
-
I'll be kippered if I know?
-
Just goes to show, our website is the 'PLAICE' to be............
Bigkev
-
It all sounds fishy to me !!!
-
Well, I am back now and you have all been very busy. Had a nice pint with Tony and Martin. I have a question about the welder...he seems a bit thin...does he have "a set à lean" legs???Get it? Acetylene?
Seriously nice work Martin.
-
Well its been a long time but back on the workshop again.
Started to make the crane and control box to fit between the main girders. The top and sides will have wood top and sides.

-
Crane tested in place and some colour on the wood tops and the crane section. Now for some food, that for me not the model.

Very well constructed MSea. Tell me, do you have one of those gadgets I read about the other day (wait, I'll look it up) NWSL Chopper? Kind of a guillotine with various inserts for cutting angles - the plastic modellers version of a mitre saw I suppose. They looked quite good for the scratchbuilder. Just wondered how you get it all so neat and accurate?
-
Sorry Wizzel NO gadgets, just chop it with saw or knife and clean up the ends.
-
Wood sides and tops fitted.
-
Just found some photos that I thought I had lost.
The walls with the windows and how the walls fitted for strength to the base. Before Wizzel asks the slots made with a plough plane and then a very very very sharp chisel.
-
the rest of the photos.
The walls have been covered with filler after the plastic edge applied. The sign has been made from 3 levels of acrylic to give them a 3D effect
-
Impressive scratch work there Martin, love to see it, what I call proper modelling.
-

He won't tell you this but being an engineer, he probably uses a hammer, chisel and his teeth (you just bite it off in the right place and spit the bit out you don't want, simples).
Haddock.
-
You engineers have some lovely habits !
-
All precision instruments in the right hands.
-
All precision instruments in the right hands.
Being a non-engineer, I can use a precision instrument with my left hand also!
-
Hi Wizzel,
Never knew you were Ambidextrous.....................!!
Bigkev
-
He may be lots of things but ...............................
-
Being an engineer the old saying is, was and always will be -- " if you can't fix it with a hammer its not fixable"
The man in the control box has been started from a German soldier by Tamiya with new head, arm replaced and equipment removed.
-
Can't wait for the day when the only thing left of the original is the left hand!!!
-
No left hand but the crane hook is now made.
-
Just love your ingenuity.
-
Thank you Zak - but as I keep telling you "One day engineers will rule the world"
-
I don't think so, they spend too much time pondering!
-
Stopped doing that, it makes yer eyes water!!
-
Hi Msea,
Just another super part of this project. I look on with envy, and wonder how much medication you're on!
Joking apart, great stuff from a master.
Bigkev
-
No just the apprentice to you lot !!!!!!
-
The crane motor, and surrounding box made then gusset plates added - placed into the correct position but still needs removing and cleaning up and painting.
Also couple more posters added to the walls, will make 2 display boards for either side of the main door on the inside, with information on product production and workers information.
-
The hook drilled to slot the wire through. Rollers made to allow the centre section to slide along the outer rails. Wire and hook fitted to the crane and then fitted to the main girders.
-
Speedy stuff, coming along nicely.
I just love to see things made from bits and pieces.
-
Thank you very much Zak.
I only make one model to your 58 in the same time scale - but I have FUN so its OK with me.
-
Brackets made for the pipes to run around the walls of the workshop.
-
I do like your attention to detail MSea and I'm really enjoying seeing this coming together.

It's amazing what you can do with a "Dave Clark 5" - or is that a bit old for you youngsters ??????
-
No, it was one of my first records - a 45rpm that is!
-
Mine was Olga Palovsky, the beautiful spy, 78 rpm.
-
Now I'm Glad all Over.
-
Couple photos of the forge with "LUKE" added - man with "no name" in the crane and the oil tank added.
Pipes running round the walls have now had the brackets and I am trying electrical cable with flanges added, to make the pipe ends ( the flanges are 5/8 inch outside size and 9mm inside size -- I only have large imperial wad punches and metric small size - that should make Haddock laugh.)
The bit of white plastic tube is an attempt to make the ends of the pipe clean - I have removed the internal wire for about 5mm and glued the tube into the space - will chop it off neat with my teeth.
