Question Mr Haddock,
I see some deck mounted torpedo tubes... Where the ship launched torpedoes bigger than sub or air launched weapons??? Its just the tubes look very big.
Looking good.
These were MK15 torpedoes, 21 inch dia by 24 foot long, don't know how this relates to the other stuff
you mention.
Out of interest, there were 102 Buckley's built.
306 ft long with a design speed of 24 knots ( 1 knot = 1.1 mph)
Built as Destroyer Escorts, they didn't have the speed or were as heavily armed as say the Fletcher class.
Main armament was 3 inch guns plus a variety of AA guns which were constantly being updated as better stuff became available.
They could carry up to 200 depth charges, launched from the waist by the "K" gun, four each side, and
over the stern from 2 DC racks.
Sonar was fitted as defense against submarines.
A hedge-hog was fitted in front of the forward superstructure and various types of aircraft warning radar
at the mast-head.
They had open bridges, so no protection for those on watch. This was intended to provide better all round visibility and cut down top weight.
They carried a crew of around 213 officers and men.
Many survived the war and went on to serve for a number of years.
Haddock.
