Title: Battleship Marat 1941
Post by: MSea on September 04, 2022, 08:18:59 PM
Just sorting out the next model for Playday/DooDahDay/Serious Modelling Day (take your pick hohoho )
Decided to get this out of the stash, got it at Telford a few years ago, now to decide how to make it.
To keep Haddock happy it should be in water so it could be waterlined and placed in 1937 England for the coronation of King George 6th, or it could be 1939 shelling Finland during the Winter War, or it could be 1940 alongside a jetty with flags and posters for the 70th anniversary of Lenin's birth, or it could be 1941 near Leningrad with some areas flooded to tilt her over and increase the range of her main guns to shell the attacking German troops, or it could be 1942 with her bow blown off and the ship raised to use the center and aft sections to be used in the defense of Leningrad, so lots to choose from. All would keep |Haddock happy but knowing I will get a clip round the ear, she will be made full hull and museum style on a plinth - so why.  First have made her sister ship the Sevastopol in 1917 alongside a jetty, so been there done that. Looking at the shape of the hull after modernization in 1928/32 loved the hammer and sickle bow and funnel so this was a decider, also the chains running from the ford deck down to the plate under the bow, never seen this on another ship. Now must get some more 2 section etch brass rails and brass bar for replacements and some form of head protection for when Haddock sees me - hohoho

Sorted out the base - I like these Zvezda ones that look like sea.
Now will it be done blue as sea - not a chance - will try and make it look like old rusty and worn bronze - if it is not good, can just overpaint it  blue.

Base coat and then 2 coats of chipping medium, then top coat of 70859 black red, the some of this  removed with warm water.

Some more rust tones added to the base and then coat of mat varnish..
Next some areas covered in chipping medium and others in crackle medium and then a coat of verdigris over the top, when dry will remove some of the top coat.

Yes lots of rum and think it looks like the inside of my head - yohohoho
Some of the top coat removed, will now walk away and come back to it later, so I don't overdo the removal all in one go. Will also pick out the ships name and surround with mat black.

Playday 10 work -- hull and bow sections  fastened together and cleaned up, some work done on the main decks and bridge  sections as well as new brass parts made for the mast.  Think also a LOT of talking and putting the world to rights as well as some model making

Two very thin coats of dark sand hand brushed onto the wooden deck - will let it dry and see if it needs another coat and then its on to picking out the individual planks in different colours.  then a wash of dark sand and Flory wash to show the edges between the planks - the joy of ship building.

Five more colours added to the planking - think I will add another different five next time I paint the decks, making a total of lots and lots - yohoho
Title: Re: Battleship Marat 1941
Post by: MSea on September 28, 2022, 08:25:44 PM
Planks picked out with 10 different colours and then a thin wash of the base colour over the top to tone them down..
Now painting the parts that are grey and when that is done will give it all a Flory wash that should tone it down some more, as well as picking out the gaps between the planks - that's the theory we shall see how it turns out - yohohoho

NO Zak full hull to show the bow and the chains at the front of the ship.
The sixteen 120mm casement guns now have brass barrels replacing the bits of plastic.

All twelve sections of brass tube cut for the main gun barrels - to be cleaned up and then glued together.

Lower hull painted black.
I think brass is so much better than the plastic - but it drives you mad doing it
I don't know how Haddock makes such an excellent job of it and still remains sane

Thought I would have to plat some copper wire to replace the chain that gives strength to the bow, but found some 32 links per inch that "she who must be obeyed" gave me a while ago and it fits the small holes in the bow plate.

Title: Re: Battleship Marat 1941

Not sure Zak, most of this class had problems with the bow and wet ford deck under rough weather..
Not found anything in my books about the chains and if they improved the ship.  Most talk about the funnel and smoke on the bridge and how the AA armament was improved. I just like this as its totally different to any other ship.

Working on the paravanes  that are fastened to the sides of the two center turrets.
The model instructions say paint them scarlet and this is shown on several models that have been made and displayed on the internet, the Kangero book about the ship show them as grey - so I have decided to do them subdued red (Vallejo hull red) as think this looks the best - rivet counters do your worst - hohohohoho.  Waiting for them to dry before fitting so am painting the blast bags at the moment.

The holes in the end of the spreader bars are not etched right through and when I have drilled them they have split - SO have drilled a hole in the center of 2 spreaders and glued them to a thread, when dry, and I have had lots more coffee, will try and glue the outer threads onto them.

Next try - have found my small drills and drilled out the holes on the end of the spreader arms - its 0.2mm before you ask..
As you can see on the second one its very very easy to break off the ends when drilling, good job I have a few spares. Next job when I have 2 quality ones is to thread he wire through and fix in place -- think its a 50 50 chance of me getting a good job done.

My plans show 6 spreader ariel, that's 12 ends to thread , that's 48 wires, that's 72 holes to thread them through - that's a LOT of coffee and naughty nautical language.  :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Think for the next ones will hold the spreaders in locking tweezers and fasten these down onto the bench, then fit each wire through both spreaders at the same time - see how this goes.
