And here's the next one. Got this from Croppers with Xmas prezzy vouchers. This gives me an excuse to splash out on "accessories" so I've got some brass barrels, wooden decks and a brass fret from WEM.
The fret gives you the option to build different periods in her service life provided the weapons fit and other bits are correct.
There seem to be umpteen paint schemes, it's just a case of selecting the right one.
I'm sure Trumpeter will have provided the usual silly mistakes but problems are there to be overcome, or ignored as the case may be.
Watch this space.

I am watching !!!!!

Have you finished the last one yet??
-
Last one's done Kiteman.
At 588mm long this is quite a large model, about 100mm longer than Texas.
First job is to fit the waterline plate, you have the option of waterline or full hull so no need to "waterline" the hull. The hull is quite flimsy so it needs the plate to maintain the hull shape in plan view, unfortunately, it's not rigid enough to keep the hull flat so I've added 2mm of plasticard to stiffen it all up, works quite well. The edges of the plate aren't very pretty and there's a radius all the way round the bottom which leaves a dirty great seam to fill.
Next job is to remove the moulded on anchor chains, they're very nicely moulded but because of the wooden decks, they have to go. I plan to attach one end of the chain to it's anchor, run it around the capstan and let it disappear down it's own hawse pipe, so holes in the hawse pipe are needed, then a hole through the base plate to pull it all ship-shape and Bristol fashion.
Trumpeter never seem to manage to get the deck to sit level with the top edge of the hull, this one needs shimming up by 0.25mm, with the wood deck in place, if I've got it right, the deck should be level with the vertical edge of the hull.
Back to the shipyard.

I do admire your work, fantastic attention to detail, and with the tenacity of a jack russel but you are a glutten for punishment aren`t you. Bordering on masochism I would say.
-
Here's some of the "goodies".
There is a school of thought that says using wooden decks is a bit of a cheat as you don't have to paint 'em to look like wood, they could be right. However, it don't 'arf add to the modelling effort. As seen, they're 0.4mm thick, 0.1mm is accounted for by the peel-off backing and I reckon the self-adhesive layer is about 0.05mm thick so not a lot of wood left.
If you don't get the build and paint sequence right, they won't go on and they're very fragile. You need to be very careful not to spill paint on 'em and finger marks ain't allowed. It is possible to make adjustments but it's very limited, you can only cut off, not put on. There are 16 sections, 3 cover the main deck from bow to stern.
I'm not convinced the colour is right but who's to know. I like the effect and don't mind the extra effort, so there!
As for the brass, there are 115 part Nos, I'm sure I won't use 'em all. If you look hard, you may see something that looks like spiral staircases, on LH, one RH, that will be fun.

Hi Haddock,
Really looking forward to seeing this one.................................!
Question. Has there ever been a Saint Haddock? If not, I reckon you ought to be first in line, as your attention to detail and perseverance would try the patience of a saint!
Good luck with the spiral staircase's.
Bless you.

Just to save me typing it again!! Wowza Haddock!!

Here's a few sub-assy's stuck together, and what it could look like when assembled. Lots more to add yet.
Haddock.
-
Need I say anything.
You engineer you.
-
So here's the main and secondary armament, 8" and 4" respectively. I suppose now, I'm going to have to add some brass ladders to the main turrets, the moulded ones are a bit pathetic!

Yes you are going to add brass ladders, can't have you only doing a 99% HS.
Have you decided what paint scheme you are doing yet????
-
Paint scheme will be January 1940, see pics. Two tone light grey, no swastika's on the decks. The weapons, searchlights and radar fit looks spot on for the period, with one very small exception.
Haddock.
Just realized, you can blow these images up and pan around them to see detail more clearly!!

This really is an èlluva ship. It almost inspires me to build one........(word to self...steady on, rembember they can`t fly)
-
Be inspired!!

Understand I missed this last evening? Sorry, the sunny shores and balmy weather north of the border made demands on my time. (Did see the new HMS Queen Elizabeth 1/1 kit though?)
-
Not much progress lately due to one thing or another.
However, got some paint on the hull and the wooden main deck in place. Fitting the deck isn't without it's problems. The deck is sandwiched between the plastic deck and the vertical surfaces adjacent to it, the locations for the next part of the assembly are less than 1mm high, so not much to glue to, hence the styrene strips to provide some surface area.
Not a criticism, just an observation but as you would expect, the wood isn't a perfect fit so some careful trimming with a sharp scalpel blade is needed to get it to sit down as it should.
Haddock.
-
...and you have certainly got it to stick down as it should. Very tidy work as always.
-
Next phase. The upper deck is fitted and needs it's "planks"
In this instance, the superstructure fits inside the wood, I think the photo's explain it OK.
The wooden decks seem to dominate the way you tackle the build.
Haddock.
-
Nice work as always.
-
The 'planking' seems so much more in scale than some of the others I've seen. Does this one come with the kit?
-
It certainly adds authenticity to the model...it really is looking good. Keep it coming Haddock....I am being inspired.
-

The "planking" is separate, this set is manufactured by Pontos Model, don't remember who I bought it from but It wasn't all that expensive, less than £15 including postage. It could have been BNA Modelworld, who are in Australia.
Haddock.
-
Well that's the upper deck "planked". The planks need a bit of trimming to let the superstructure sit down as it should and there's a bit of detail to add before it can go on, looking promising though.
Haddock.
-
If I were to attempt this it would certainly look very different. More like a sawmill I would say.
-
All these small brass bits seem to consume vast amounts of time. Hey ho!
If it's not painted, it's not glued in place but these give some idea of what the finished article should look like. Lots of detail to add though.
Haddock.
-
wowza!
-
Really looking good so far. (What else 'wood' I expect?)
I've just found wood 'planking' as a waterslide decal from Andysbmodels on Evilbay. Messaged them and there will be a range of 'ship-scale' sheets in the new year!
-
Bit more progress, if it's in the picture, it's stuck in place.
Haddock.
-
Pure Magic!
-
Beastly!
-
Now then, it's me again. It's so long ago since I posted anything, I've nearly forgotten how to do it!!
Progress is painfully slow but here's some pics of the bridge area. It's now obvious that the fore-mast is way too short, I'm plucking up the courage to chop it off and graft one on that's round about the right height.
Haddock
-
Faint heart never won fair lady!!
Should look OK with a bit of a clean up and some paint sloshed on. The extra gusset is just to stiffen it up a bit, shouldn't be there really.
Haddock.
I do like it when a plan comes together.
-
Is the ranting over now?
Can we all get back to normality at last.
Looks ok Tony, does it telescope?
-
Looking good!

Rant over. It doesn't telescope, it's the main-mast that may telescope. As an aside, I've found a picture of Prince Eugen's main-mast. Even allowing for the perspective, the two crows nests are very close together, suggesting that the middle portion of the mast has been lowered. I can only assume that this was a feature of all ships in the class.
HOWEVER.
I'm now building the cranes.
Pic No 1 shows the port side crane roughly in position, note the end of the jib resting on the ships boat.
Pic No 2 shows the starboard side crane roughly in position, note how the jib neatly stows between the ships boat and the edge of the hull.
Pic No 3 shows the port side with the crane removed, note the huge gap between the two ships boats and the mounting position of the cab ( about 10mm too far forward ). The gap isn't there on the starboard side boats!!
Pic No 4 shows the starboard crane with the jib jacked up a little to clear the rails. Both sides should look like this according to my reference pictures.
How Trumpeter manage to get it so wrong is beyond me.
Now I need to decide what to do with the portside crane, now ain't a good time to be attempting any major surgery!!
Haddock.
-
Wowza Haddock, repositioning that crane isnt feasable is it?? What with the wooden decks and all. This is a major error from Trumpeter. Would it be possible to adjust the crane to a higher angle to clear the boat, railings or whatever may be in the way??? Just an idea.
-
More rants then!

That's what I intend to do, pics to follow when it's done.

Job jobbed, not ideal but it'll have to do.
Haddock.
-
Oops, I am a Silly Billy, forgot to add the platforms under the bow and stern of the boats.
That's better!!
Haddock.
-
Well done the master! Looks ok to me, a fine solution I would say!
-
Here's some railings an a bit of rigging.

Hefty looking chains.

Hefty looking chains.
Don't get him going on the size of his chain.
BUT it looks like another Telford winner to me.

Hefty looking chains.
You could be right but my photographic evidence says not.

It was not a derogatory comment, merely a comment.

All comments are welcome.

I like it, hefty chains or not!
-
Hi Haddock,
I know that you will give me the correct 'gen' on chains when I advance that far in my ship builds.
They look okay to me.
Cheers,
Bigkev
