Hi all,
Sorry for the lack of posts lately.
I am just getting over the flu, spent most of Christmas in bed, still I built this before Christmas but was not sure whether to post anything or not. I am not up to modelling as yet, just taking it slowly.
Neil sucked me into his Battle of Britain stuff, it seems I am now a member of the SIG - lucky me.
I started by building a Control tower in card from GPM from Poland.
It seems to be a card copy of the 1/72(76) Airfix one, even down to the runway bearing.
Further research leads me to believe that this is not a control tower that existed during the battle of Britain, and so back to the drawing board.
This is actually 1:50 not 1:48, but the difference is quite small.
-
If you were at the last modelling day then you will have seen me sticking small bits of card to larger bits of card to make a better fitting control tower for the BOB period.
The carcass of the building is card and this is overlaid with brick sized pieces of card.
Conveniently in 1:48 scale, 1 ft = 1/4 of an inch, bricks measure 9in x 4 in x 3 in and so the small card chads measure 1/16 in x 3/16 in.
They are stuck on with PVA glue trying to keep the courses as straight as possible.
After completion they get a coat of Shellac/knotting to stabilise the card a bit more.
-
I know its time consuming - but the individual bricks look great.
-
Thanks Martin.
First mark lines on the building, apertures already cut out.
Cut out individual bricks, with a scalpel and ruler. A sharp blade is essential
The white pot is the PVA applied with a brush.
The PVA is applied to a small area of building.
The bricks are picked up on the scalpel point and applied.
Quite tedious and time consuming, but therapeutic as well.
This is the bottom storey of the watch office/tower. 1959/34
Square plan 22 ft x 28 ft
They were built in brick and concrete and I believe there was one at Driffield.
Throughout time these buildings have been adapted and converted to suit more modern flying.
-
Hi Zak,
Hope you are feeling a bit better.
This looks fabulous!
It will be very impressive once complete.
Will you be doing some Nissen Huts, Parachute Store, NAAFI, Aircraft Revetment's, to complete the diorama, it'll only take you a week or so...…Only Joking!!!
Get well soon, but with this build, Neil should be overjoyed!
Bigkev
-
Hi Kevin, improving every day.
Don't think this is happening now, remember it was all a month ago, I am playing catch up.
Here is the tower added to the watch office.
The glazing is clear plastic sheet, glazing bars are from this styrene strips.
-
Excellent model - BUT what will Neil be getting you to do next, now you are a members of his SIG ????????
I was thinking of starting a SIG -- "The strange, weird and who would want to make a model like that" SIG think it sounds like most of my models - hohoho
-

I think that there may already be one of those, run by Terry Campion- GSIG of Goth, right up your street.
-
The control tower work in progress, figure gives some idea of the size.
I have added an interior of sorts - last two photos show this.
-
Tamiya 1:48 British Light Utility Car 10HP.
Lovely little kit, all you have come to expect from Tamiya.
It still needs a small amount of dry brushing and weathering.
-
Here is the Airfix 1/48 Albion 3 point fueller.
-
Airfix 1:48 Bedford MWD.
-
Here are some views of the diorama as it progresses.
The hangar is a card kit from Poland.
No suitable aircraft available as yet, others will supply those.
I have also made lots of bits and pieces to go inside the hangar.
-
Excellent work - thought it was a photo of a real hanger on first look.
Will you/Neil be employing Pickfords to get it to Telford - hohoho .

Happy to drive a van if we need to use one to get everything there! Looking superb.

Oh, you might regret that comment Roger...!!
Build away young Zak.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
It will need to be a very big van.
-
Maybe two vans...…………….
Watch office without tower, used at dispersal sites.
-
Well I did ask Neil if he wanted anymore models.
He mentioned dispersal pens.
So I did some research and came up with this.
This will be an E type pen for fighter aircraft.
This one at Kenley seemed appropriate.
-
So, luckily I had a stock of unwanted corrugated card and started with that as a basis for the embankments.
I stuck the card together and added a layer of brown gummed parcel tape.
-
The structures were then given a coating of Polycell textured paint for ceilings.
The end of the walls are brick and these are brick embossed plastic card, really for O gauge railways (7mm = 1 ft. (1/43)). this was painted and the mortar courses added.
I make my own grass from sieved and coloured sawdust rather than buying it.
The whole lot will be grassed,
The concrete areas were scored in 10 ft. squares and painted a sort of concrete colour.
-
When do you move into 1:1 scale - now that would need a very large van - hohoho
-
Ha, ha, its getting out of hand as it is.
Grassing.
-
Hi Zak,
Another creation from Goblin Enterprise's. Is there no limit to your skill and knowledge...?
It looks like Neil is going to have A LOT to be grateful for with all the items you have created and built.
Excellent stuff, and build. Lots of 'how to do it' also, which I find very useful and inspiring.
Can you show how to create 'Time' please, its the only thing I'm lacking at the moment.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Yes, the faster you go the longer it gets, Time dilation principle.
-

Hi Zak,
I thought you would know...…
Bigkev
-
Some small buildings to add.
A small concrete storage building and a type 22 pillbox, for airfield defence.
-
Crossley Fire Tender 4x4 Foam and CO2.
Accurate Armour.
-
Dispersal pen again.
-
Was thinking ( must stop doing this it's a very bad habit - hohoho ) you seem to have ALL the none essential buildings but have missed out the most important one ----- the toilet block.
-

Thanks Martin, it is around the back of the hangar!
-
I have been messing about with the different watch offices/control towers.
-
Hi Zak,
Great stuff.
I suppose the final placement of all these watch towers, will only be made easier when aircraft and figures/vehicles are also in the scene.
They all look impressive though.
Have a house point.
Bigkev

I tend to favour the watch office with tower whatever the rest think.
The vehicles and so on are still a work in progress.
I think the diorama needs a couple of Hurricanes in the hangar under repair and some outside as well.
It should keep me busy.
-
Don't worry, lots of Hurricanes on the way.
Roger
-
More trying things out.
Hurricane under repair in the hangar - collapsed undercarriage,
its not finished, just testing placement.
The next to last shot shows the roof on and the lights as well.
-
Here are all the parts stuck down on a removeable base.
-
Looking good, a bit on the clean side ( but that's from an ex-engineer)
-
More messing about.
Mugs of tea available for those engineers, especially for you Martin.
-
Motor Transport Shed (2 bay), usually for fire tenders or petrol tankers.
(I did not have room for a larger one)
Scratch built from card and embossed plastic card.
-
The airfield needs some sort of ambulance(s), the only ones available as kits are from Accurate Armour and Matador Models, both the K2 ambulance and both expensive.
I have bitten the bullet and will attempt the Accurate Armour Austin K2Y, 4x2 Heavy Ambulance.
The kit is resin and brass.
I started by identifying all the parts.
I found one part, the bell was missing, Accurate Armour will send another, it is a tiny part.
I lay out all the parts and number them on some paper.
It also helps you familiarise yourself with the parts.
-
They were then all given a wash in water and detergent and then rinsed and allowed to dry.
-
Very organised - for a zombie that is !!!!
Will look forward to seeing it ALL put together at Telford - how many tables will it take up ?????
-

All 60 ft.
No, just one.
-
It seems a LOT larger in the photos.
-
It seems a LOT larger in the photos.
If Zak says it will fit on one table believe him.....
However the one table is 60ft long.....!
Cheers,

It is in separate sections, so it will fit anywhere.
Having said that it is quite large and a photo session in Bill's dining room proved how difficult it is to get around a large model, much more room will be needed to get decent photos I fear.
-
The fit of the parts is excellent after cleaning up and removing them from the runners with a fine saw.
I sand with water to try to reduce the risk of dust and wear a mask - yes, yes, I await the usual comments, that must be an improvement, I thought you wore one all the time and so on.
I replaced the linkage on the front wheels with brass rod, the one supplied snapped.
-
Would anybody even think such a thing as connecting you and masks -- its not worth the retribution - you would take.
-
More of the same sort of stuff really.
-
Undercoating/priming in progress.
-
Some photos as things progress.
-
Looking great - is Neil and the SIG paying , per building, per item or per brick for ALL the stuff you are doing for Telford ????
-

Oh, I never thought of that.
However in the first photo you can see his stomach on the left and my fingers on the right, Bill was wielding the camera.
-
Painting/spraying in progress.
-
It is such a lovely day, there is no choice but to model (what a pity), it is pouring it down and very windy.
Perfect modelling weather.
-
While I wait for everything to cure/ dry I am contemplating adding another part to the airfield.
This will be the motor transport section.
I think it will consist of two 3 bay sheds for vehicle storage, offices, latrines(especially for Martin), crew quarters and a petrol pump(s). It is all in my head at the moment.
Unfortunately to keep it all balanced this may also involve another section.
-
Will it be one table or one HALL at Telford
-
Modelling done during yesterdays 12 hour power cut.
Motor Transport Shed, card mainly.
Coated in a Polytex sort of stuff.
-
Hi Zak,
Great stuff.
Bempton, better not be cut of too long at anytime.
It just allows your creative and high output skills to flow.
We might need a bigger Telford this year!!
Good as always,
Bigkev.
-
Power back again.
More work on the ambulance.
I just need to add the bell.
-
Hi Zak,
Oooooh I like that.
I have built several of the Airfix 1/72 models but none looked as good as that,
Watching this thread with interest.
Cheers,
Bigkev

I'm blushing now!

You are to buildings what Haddock is to ships - blush away.
-
At the moment I am busy re-roofing the Motor Transport sheds with corrugated iron.
I made this from Aluminium trays, the sort from ready meals.
I scribed on the corrugations and cut it up into scale sized sheets.
-
Roof fitted and repainted, black.
-
At least YOU have got the panels on the correct way round.
-
I have redone the roof again, happier with it eventually.
Here is a David Brown Tractor VIG. 1/462.
Still needs decals.
I will not get any proper modelling done for the next week.
Off to Halifax tomorrow hopefully.
Then granddaughter is here all next week.
So I am trying to get things to a state so that I can clear up and do some modelling with her. She is 6!
-

That should improve the quality of your finished models - hohoho - I know I will pay for that at a later time.
Enjoy Halifax and have a good week after that
-
Hi Zak,
What element of the diorama are you going to let her do?
Bigkev
-
David Brown Tractor just about completed.
Some views of the completed buildings.
-
Fuel bowser for the tractor to pull.
-
Nissen hut for the Motor Transport Department and general accommodation.
Scratch built from card and thick aluminium foil.
-
Another excellent building - but don't forget the toilets - hohoho
-
When will it end!!!!!!!
-
Another excellent building - but don't forget the toilets - hohoho
Ablutions Msea, Ablutions.

I'm flushed with embarrassment....
Bigkev
-
Here is a conversion from the Airfix Bedford MWD into a water tanker, I have shown it with the original.
The fuel bowser is being repainted.
-
Fuel Bowser just about complete.
-
Neat, like the tractor.
Haddock.
-
Next, I am going to convert or try to, the Airfix Albion into a tractor and trailer.
Something like this.
-
I see you will now need 2 halls at Telford - hohoho.
Not sure if I am going to the show this year, but think I need to go just to see ALL your models in one place.
-
Here is the converted Albion together with a trailer. The trailer was scratch built from plastic card.
This is what I built at the club modelling day - another Nissen hut. It still needs windows doors, end walls and painting
-
Versatile as an egg!!
-
Load on the back of the Albion, it is a Hurricane, this may be sacrilege to some of our members -I will send Neil a copy as he never looks on here.
The Albion is being refuelled.
Yes, the wings are under the tarp.
-
Slightly side tracked into 1/76 scale for Roger.
He wanted a dispersal hut.
So after a whizz through the Battle of Britain film, here is my best guess, about 24 ft. x 12 ft.
Made from card with a thin wooden veneer overlay.
Painting next.
-
Do you take orders for 1:1 scale sheds ?????????
-
Do you take orders for 1:1 scale sheds ?????????
Hi Msea,
I think he does, but the waiting time is horrendous...…
Possibly as long as 3 days...…….ho, ho, ho
Kevin ;)
-
Here is a bit more on the 1/76 or is it 1/72 dispersal shed.
The ruler shows the size.
-
While the dust settles - well paint dries, I decided that I had better build one for Neil in 1/48 scale.
What do you do with your old cereal packets?
-Mine are about to become a dispersal hut.
The bottom photo is so you can compere the sizes.
-
The front and back panels of my weetabix box are saved, to make things from, such as test models of building to get the size and shape. The side panel is cut into small squares to mix glue on then throw away.
-

Maybe we should run a thread on the use of cereal packets and other household items?
-
Here is the 1/72 or 1/76 one completed.
-
Guess what, here is the 1:48 one as well.
They are very similar, except the size of course.

Could even be a "cereal packet SIG"
Haddock.
-
Just perfect, what a clever chap you are! Better get some more Hurricanes built to go with it.
-
Well, its back to vehicles, here is the Airfix Albion fueller being converted to a MkI Coles Crane carrying vehicle. Supplied to the RAF in 1936.
I built one of these in 1/76 scale some time ago, and I not the photos have been deleted.
Again I used the plans I had and scaled them up.
Crane details were very sketchy and so best guesses and total fiction applied.
-
This lot is deserves a table all on it's own.
Haddock.
-
Thanks Haddock.
The fuel tank was moved, a new deck built for the crane and a window cut in the rear of the cab.
Here we are sloshing on some paint.
-
Meanwhile I must turn my attention to building a Hurricane, for Ginger Lacey - local connection.
I will not post anything here as you see enough Spitfires and Hurricanes.
While it is drying and so on, I may attempt another vehicle.
This will be a white metal Kit from Assam Models, they produce a whole range of 1:48 vehicles, not cheap, but there is little alternative.
Here is their website.
http://www.asam.co.uk/
It will be a Bedford OD with a Queen Mary Trailer.

Your pockets must be the deepest in Yorkshire!
I think 'Herr Robinson' should be down the Yorkshire Pudding Mines to help offset this monetary effort, though his pockets are sown up to the start of the pocket, so perhaps not.

By 'Odd Look' is that a description of the man, or a statement of his intentions.....

BOTH!
-
More painting.
Decaling.
Shading and dry brushing.
All in progress.
-
Almost finished, just a little bit of touching up.
Here are some better photos.
-
I got side tracked again into another cereal packet, cocktail sticks, copper wire, clear plastic and card.
Here is the result.
Catfoss Control Tower or Watch Office if you prefer, it is a bit rough around the edges, but it from nothing.
-
If that is "a bit rough around the edges" what the h%$% does that make my models ??????
-

It may look better in photos!
-
A bit of a local connection, here is Ginger Lacey's Hurricane, he lived in Bridlington for quite a number of years.
It is the Airfix MkI.
-
Just messing around with the diorama really to see how it all looks.
-
NAAFI Van for the RAF personnel.
This will have to be scratch built, using some wheels that I purchased in 1/48 scale, I can't remember what they were really for, probably resin replacements for the Airfix Bedford MWD.
Construction is mainly plastic card.
I always find it difficult to get everything square.
-
Hi Zak,
That looks really good, I love it!
Pity no manufacturer has catered(excuse pun)for one in 1/72 or 1/48th..
Yours will be very unique.
Can I put an order in for a Bacon Bap and Mug of Tea please??
Cheers.
Bigkev

Another excellent model - put me down for 2 bacon butties and a MUG of coffee
-

Sorry due to self isolation, it will not be open for a while.
-
More progress, the Airfix ground crew have been slightly modified.
Lots of bits and pieces for the inside and shelf.
-
More
-
Hi Zak,
Just Fabulous.....!
Bigkev
-
Splendid!
Haddock.
-
You know what I think - how do you do it - will you have your OWN BofB table at the show, or do you have to let Neil etc share your limelight ????????
-
While the paint dries I have decided to attempt an AEC Matador flatbed as a scratch-build.
I had some plans in 1:76 that I resized on the printer/scanner. (x 158%).
I then looked for photos and further information in the books I had and on the internet.
I found a nice walkaround. https://www.net-maquettes.com/pictures/aec-0853-matador-walkaround/
The chassis is the place to start and due to social isolation I may give you the whole build in detail. Be warned.
-
Here are a few of the tools/ jigs used to get straight lies and right angles - I still struggle.
-
Thank you I will steal some of the ideas above

-
Meanwhile back to the NAAFI Van, complete with figures.
-
Looks like our show - more people at the food van than in the hall - hohoho
-
Back to the AEC.
Progress continues
-
Hi Zak,
Great Stuff.
You are a master at scratch building.

Thank you kind sir.
Here the mudguards are formed from plastic card moulded into a ring by wrapping round a former, immersing in boiling water, cooling and then the plastic retains the circular shape. This is then cut to the desired lengths.
-
The steering wheel formed from solder wrapped around a former and cut, the rest is superglued in place, there will be some detail in the cab, but just a suggestion of brake lever and gearstick.
-
I am going to try making some wheels from balsa, the photos will show the process hopefully.
-
Flat bed added.
I am not happy with the wheels, I will try and improve them.
-
Hi Zak,
I'm sure those wheels won't hold his build back.
It looks great as is, but if your not happy, then I'm sure you will make it so... (Captain Picard)
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
I am attempting to make a new set of wheels in plastic, a similar procedure but they hold an edge better,
Time will tell, its taken since 8:30 to make one.
Perhaps I should get some casting resin and moulding rubber?
-
Here is the first one, I think it is an improvement.
-
Looks good to me - I have never had much luck making things from balsa unless it was a flat section.
-
Hi, spent a lot of yesterday making wheels, still not totally happy, but they will have to do.
Paint sloshed on in the method of Haddock.
Colours of RAF vehicles during the Battle of Britain - almost anything goes, they seem to have been transitioning from blue to disruptive and anything in between.
Sort of khaki -ish at the moment.
The black, mickey mouse ears pattern was later.
Seems almost like army colours, but maybe they were too busy to repaint ground vehicles.
-
While the paint dries, I started this on our modelling day, I have eventually finished it.

I have sourced some online, just waiting for a price and maybe they will look better.
-
The scratchbuild stuff takes my breath away. That first world war thread you did went on forever and was brill. I'm going to enjoy seeing them for real hopefully at our show!
-
I am still awaiting a price on some wheels, so I am having another go at making some.
-
Wheels on their way, reasonable price too.

That's wheely good - hohoho
-

That's wheely funny as well.
Here it is without wheels.

My wheels and some kit wheels?
-
I am adding a load especially for Mr. Robinson - what can it be?
The tarpaulin is made from tissue paper coated with diluted PVA, it will of course need painting.

I know the answer, I know the answer...…!!
It's a pack of toilet rolls...….
Bigkev
-
No, its just one very large toilet roll, but it might be something to do with Rolls?
-
Is it a load of bread cakes then?

it is not a 'Rolls Canhardly' , it is an 'Rolls Andrexly Special 2020' with underhanging cleansing attributes.
What else, could it be...?
Bigkev

No its a bird of prey.

-
Just been to the allotment and done some digging.
Still lots to do.
Picked leeks, parsnips, broccoli and cauliflower.
Here is my latest model.
This is a white metal and resin kit.
Not strictly used on airfields but it is an ATV.
Lets say it is on loan from the NFS or AFS for general station use.
-
I think now it is onto a fire tender, this will be a scratch built streamlined one, about 100 were in use from 1935-36 and so I presume some would still be around in 1940.
It will be mostly guesswork, using a few photographs and the dimensions of the Crossley chassis used to make them.
Here is one of the photos just to give you a flavour of the beast.
-
This is what I will be working to, rough and ready I am afraid -a bit like me.
-
"Rough and ready" -- that a kind description - hohohoho
-
I have finished my AEC Matador, here it is with commercial wheels.
A Merlin engine under the tarpaulin.
-
Hi Zak,
A very nice build and from scratch too!
Shame it wasn't a 'Kestrel' engine rather than a 'Merlin', the Kestrel being more well known, but agreed the Merlin powered the Spitfire and Hurricane, so I suppose that is to expected, Neil knows what he wants.
Nice finish, and a great replica, thumbs up from me! :)
Cheers,
Bigkev

In truth it is the wrong mark of Merlin, hence the tarpaulin.
-
Will Neil be putting tarpaulins over any aircraft he thinks are wrong ??????

I have just checked -- no yellow stripe Kevin !!!! so you can tell Neil - hohoho
Just think of the trouble I will get into when/if Neil ever gets online !!!!!

Progress on the Crossley Streamlined Fire Tender, it looks something like.
Lots of little details to add.
-
Looks good to me
-
Sorry, but I was building this in-between waiting for the glue to go off and things to set.
This is a huge chunk of white metal that I assembled using low melt solder - I tries epoxy resin (POXY really) with little success, superglue for small bits.
I see from the photo the odd joint needs work.
Photos are cruel.
If the weather improves I need to get 4 x 39ft rows of main crop potatoes in.
Luckily allotments count as exercise - lucky me, so modelling will be on the back burner maybe.

Hi Zak,
So at least we know where we can come to get some potatoes for our chips!!

While the decals set and such I have started the next vehicle, it follows on from the last one, it is part of the same picture.
This is the ambulance on a Morris Commercial D chassis, the one on the left of the picture.

Great stuff Dave.
Your going to need a bigger house for all that.
Andy.

Sandra won't let me!
Here is the chassis for the Morris Ambulance.

Don't worry Zak,
Biggles says you can use his garage free of charge....
Most of your builds will be on the BoB display.
Sandra might say 'No' to you, Jill will say 'No' to Neil,
Who really has the power...?
The Wive's.

I know my place.

The diorama is coming on at great speed - should be good.

Don't even think about storage in my hut -- am working on "she who must be obeyed" to get new furniture inthe model room for display -- wish me luck !!!

Oh, nice one, I could do with some of that, what are you getting.
I should probably get a very large Nissen hut.
-
I thought you had made a lot of them already !!!!!
-
Not full size ones though!
Glazing.
-
Blurred!
-
Blurred!
Just like me then. Hides all the faults.
-
Hi Zak,
No wonder it is blurred, I bet you took the picture after the mentor session with Biggles.
You hands must have been shaking with excitement of seeing him post.
Its looks nice, any chance of clear picture, please.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
The hanger looks really excellent Dave. It did look like the real thing at first.
-
Is this a better picture - all faults on show, cruel camera.
I am really struggling with this Morris Commercial Ambulance, it just does not feel right, looks too modern.
I may have to try again.
-
That's better.
Persevere with the van, it'll turn out OK.
Haddock.

Most models don't 'look right' until painted and decalled.

I was just taking photos of the finished streamlined fire tender, assuming I had done all I could.
Looking at the photos, I notice that I need some mirrors, those easy to forget details, it is not like a kit where the bits are there. I need to write a checklist, in fact I think I once did, I wonder where I put it?
-
Undercoating, looking a bit better.
I found my list, filed it just where it should be.
Starting handle required? and valves on the tyres.
-
Vehicle storage box, I took the photo so I will know where they go when I pack up after a show, if ever there is another.
-
You're going to need a big box to put all the little boxes in!!
-
Will they be made of ticky tacky, these little boxes?
-
I just hope we get to be able to display all Zak's vehicles and buildings at some point in the future!

Something to look forward to...

That’s a really good idea 💡.

Quivering in anticipation.

So, while the first coat of paint dries on the Morris, it is onto the Fordson, the last vehicle in the photo.
This is a 3 ton Fordson 6x4 on an E917T chassis, many of these were used in the balloon winch role as well as foam tenders. They were also fitted with bus chassis for bomber crew transportation. The Fordson Sussex seems to be very similar.
-
Blimey you're batting on with your modelling!
I'm about to spray some Sky under surfaces on a trio of Spitfires (I know, yawn!!!), that I'm doing as a diorama based, upon a real photo of three No 92 Sqn Spitfires taking off at Manston in the autumn of 1940.
I have just painted the pilots, but maybe should have glued them in to place BEFORE I joined the fuselage halves, as it looks like I might have "fun" easing them in to the cockpits! Doh!

Careful Haddock, I think you mean walking the plank, be careful with those consonants.

More progress, the Morris has had two coats of Blue.
The Fordson continues.
I am trying to leave the Fordson as individual bits, but it is quite hard not to stick it all together.

I would if I knew what a consonant was.

-
I thought it was somebody who went into space - hohoho
-
I have been trying to work out the foam apparatus on the rear, no plans and very few photos of this particular vehicle, so best guess.
The bits and pieces are made from anything that fitted the bill.
-
Hi Zak,
Very clever stuff that, impressive collection of models for this diorama, you'll be having your own IPMS 'Special Edition' at this rate.
Excellent.
Bigkev
-
Hey Zak,
You could fill a magazine with a 'Modellling Battle of Britain buildings and vehicles' series of articles....
Looks like IPMS Magazine might be the beneficiary???
It would certainly be an alternative 'take' of the more traditional Battle of Britain fare!!!
Love 'em,
Neil

Seconded!

Hi all,
I have just watch a short film on 992 squadron - it is here on line
https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=992+squadron&&view=detail&mid=261C44EE882993715481261C44EE882993715481&&FORM=VRDGAR&ru=%2Fvideos%2Fsearch%3Fq%3D992%2Bsquadron%26FORM%3DHDRSC3
I found it interesting, just for the vehicles, some are Fordson Sussex types.

Aaaah, but is your tan through waiting as good as mine...!
Bigkev
-
More progress on the Morris Commercial.
Roof not stuck down yet.
-
Mirrors and starting handle added - I always forget them, lights still to paint.
As I said earlier, could be better, but it will end up the farthest away on a three vehicle diorama so what the photos sees the eye doesn't.
-
Well, I have spent the last week, messing about with the idea of a barrage balloon in 1:48 scale - quite big, yes.
The idea was to coat a balloon with brown papers gummed parcel tape, a few layers I thought - 3 or four, add some fins and see how it went.
Well it went quite well.
Martin at the shop supplied the balloon.
I duly coated it with the tape - it has a water soluble adhesive on one side, so cut it into pieces and stick it on. $ layers.
I allowed it to dry and coated it with a thin plaster wash, allowed it to dry - lots of sanding in-between.
Then I popped the balloon - disaster, the parcel tape had stuck to the balloon and here is the result. I am not sure that I can retrieve this?

Try again, this time you will succeed,

-
Deflated, deflated...…………. I had to gasp for air...…………… a did use a few expletives and then saw the funny side.

Why not do it as a part deflated balloon being winched up or down - never a disaster just another idea for a model
-

I am attempting a repair but the surface is not as smooth as it should be.

I have to ask myself "why did he pop the balloon?".
Haddock.

I could have gone on about diffusion across a semi-permeable membrane, pressure differences and maybe even osmosis.
But I didn't.
I used a piece of thick wire, pieces the balloon and pulled out the dents, rather like a car body shop.
I will add a few more layers of gummed paper and see how it looks.
What a way to spend your day.
-
It looks like you are getting there with this Dave.
-
With all that work can we have the airfield display when the squadrons have flown off into battle, it all looks good.
-
That's a great idea -- no planes -- hohoho sorry Neil
-
What no planes!
-
Don't worry Chris --- Helos are accepted just no planes
-
As the first layer on the balloon dries, it is back to the mini diorama with the three vehicles.
Here they are, posed just to look at the effect, the foam tender is still unfinished, and I knocked the mirroe off the streamlines one.
-
Still not sure if it is your model or a photo -- so well done that man.
-
Hi Zak,
Great, just great...
Never seen anything matching this.
These will get a lot of attention when released to the general public.
Have a big pat on the back from me.
Cheers,
Bigkev

What ingenuity... absolutely fascinating.
I am awe-struck!
Biggles
-
If you were to take these pictures in black and white, they could easily pass as photo's of the real thing.
Brilliant.
Haddock.
-
AWESOME, Just AWESOME!!!
-
To (mis)quote that line from the 'Calander Girls' film – "we're going to need a considerably bigger display area" to properly display all these wonderful buildings and vehicles!
If we DO ever get around to photographing them for the IPMS Magazine and/or the IPMS Battle of Britain Special, (which I am determined we will), the three vehicles infront of the buildings can reproduced exactly as the photo of the original... even with the Spitfire, Gladiator and Blenheim in the background...
If the INFLATED barrage balloon attempt fails, could you maybe reproduce it in DEFLATED form and position it next the the vehicle as a diorama in its own right? As if the crew were just about to inflate it? Just a suggestion.
I'm still awestruck...
... and can't wait to see them on a display table!
Biggles
-
Many thanks for the comments, he said blushing.
-
Really excellent models!
-
Back to modelling, just started the barrage balloon winch.
-
The 3 vehicle pictures really do look realistic, they look great.
-
Slow progress, the rear had a flat part, presumably for carrying the balloon.
Well that's what it seems like from photos.
-
Presumably all s ratch built Dave?
Looks excellent.
-
Yes, all scratch built apart from the wheels.
Here is the cage that the winch operator sat in for protection.
Built from wire and thread.
-
Here is the cage door showing the technique used. Wire across the plastic card frame and then thread at right angles.
-
I thought the cage was for me !!!!!!!
-

No, it's the doghouse for you, as usual.

I think that is a complement, but not sure about comparisons with Martin.
I don't put a full interior in the cab, as once the windows glazed it is quite difficult to see inside.
So seats, steering wheel, gear stick, hand brake and some form of dash board.
The winch had normal controls, brake, clutch throttle, gears and a handbrake for the second engine fitted behind the cab and the winch cage.
There were two dials on a sort of dashboard. Mostly guesswork.
They do apparently have one of these at Hendon.
-
I concur with Kevin. I'm amazed at the scratch building you are doing!
Chris
-
Scratch building is what I enjoy most, At least all the mistakes are mine.
Here it is ready for painting, although it looks complete, it comes in parts for painting, then a few more details to add.
-
Brilliant Dave!
You are a scratchbuilder par excellence!
Have you sorted out the barrage ballon 'problem'...
... or is that still a work in progress?
Awestruck Biggles

Astounding amount of modelling with excellent skill.
Well done.

While the balloon winch is in the paint shop(corner of the model room) and the balloon is being coated with varnish(in the garage) - notice I am not allowed in the airing cupboard.
I decided to tackle the Accurate Armour Thompson Fueller.
The photos show
The box art
The box contents
Kit parts laid out for checking.
-
A few comments.
I am busy cleaning up the parts and unfortunately there are a number of faults to rectify.
The pictures tell you all.
I wonder how long their moulds last? It appears some of the mould is left in the axle hole on one of the wheels.
-
However bad it is -- it will not stop a man of your caliber - hohoho
-
Wonderful as ever. HOW did you do the steering wheel?
-

I will do a demo sometime.

The new cutting mat - especially for Chris.

Hi Dave/Zak,
(I'm never sure how to address members on the website, by their username or the actual name? Or does it matter?)
In any event, you certainly employ a FULL range of modelling skills and materials in your models.
Wonderful.
I look forward to your demo when we have our next Modelling Open Day at Cass Hall... something to look forward to when this awful pandemic is over.
BTW: Have you changed your photo?
Is it an 'old' photo or have you grown a beard since we last saw you?

Here is the Fordson Sussex Balloon winch, once again, it still needs mirrors. Why do I remember when I look at the photos?
Brain dead or what? (no, you don't need to comment Martin)

The balloon winch truck is looking good Dave. I am really impressed with your scratch building. Keep going.

That looks brilliant Dave...
... there's a endearing fragile quaintness about these late 1930s vehicles that you have captured perfectly.
When this pandemic is over we're going to have a great time seeing all your vehicles and buildings in diorama settings.
I'm still masking-up Spitfires and Hurricanes, prior to airbrushing some colour on them.
It's perfect spraying weather (warm and sunny) where I can open a window to let my spray booth extractor pipe out.

As I have reached page 20 I am wondering whether to start part 2?

The Thompson re-fueler is a strange looking machine.
Great stuff,
Andy.
-
I have just about finished the Thompson fueller, I put the nozzles for the fuel pipe and oil pipe in a safe place, still attached to the resin runner, so its bit enough.
Now where did I put it?
I can't find it anywhere, hopefully they will turn up.
-
Pictures, so far.
-
Sure is a strange looking beast.
I think this is becoming a bit more than a BoB diorama, more
like a treatise on WW2 airfield vehicles. Very impressive. It could even overshadow the aircraft!
Haddock.

The aircraft enthusiasts seem to forget the amount of infrastructure and manpower need to launch their much loved Hurricanes and Spitfires, with only one person in them.

I thought the pilot did every thing. Carrying his tool box in the back of his Morgan...
Andy.

Hi Zak,
Another fine model to add to your now extensive collection.
What's next, a 'Morgan' for the pilot, plus obligatory tool box as Andy suggests.

Hi Zak,
Absolutely mind-bogglingly fascinating how you manage to create things out of cardboard, tape, bits of plastic and brown paper...
You are a true modeller in the proper sense of the word...

Absolutely mind-bogglingly fascinating how you manage to create things out of cardboard, tape, bits of plastic and brown paper...
You are a true modeller in the proper sense of the word...
... and your speed on construction. Amazing.
I think I may take up stamp collecting, I am way out of my league amongst you lot!
Awestruck Biggles
Its never mind the quality feel the width though!

Hi Zak,
At this point, can I ask are you bragging or complaining?
No matter which it is, it all looks good to me.

I was meaning that they lack quality, but there is a lot, never a perfectionist, jack of all master of none.
Do you get the drift?
I am a little too impatient to produce a superb model.
Anyway back to modelling.
Earth colour added, it was some terrain cover from Vallejo that I had left from a previous project.
-
Looking really great Dave. I can't believe how quickly you put this together. So while everyone else are doing the aircraft you are single handedly doing the airfield. Magic?
Chris

By the time he has finished Chris there will be no room for any aircraft - hohoho

Very true, but do I care?
Not really, it is entertaining me and keeping me relatively sane.( I know I am giving Martin ammunition to say something really complementary.)
Well, while the scenery is drying I have been giving thought to the searchlight and generator problem.
I have a poor plan of the searchlight in 1:76 from the Airfix book, " Modelling RAF vehicles" By Gerald Scarborough, and quite a few photos on line, so I shall resize the plan and take it from there.
I am intending this to be a 90cm searchlight (light projector), like the one in the photo(see earlier).
The generator will be another problem, no plan, some photos and videos on line that are quite helpful, but they come in various shapes and sizes.
I think I will opt for the Lister JP4 type and see how it goes, it will be mounted on a two wheeled trailer.
So after spending three hours down the allotment, I may attempt something this pm, again it will be plastic card and commercial (resin) wheels.
I have found a website that list all the Lister engines and gives some critical dimensions, I will be able to use this to guesstimate sizes from side views.
I do not know if all searchlights had generators or if some operated from base supplies? Anyone know?
-
Would I DARE say anything - hohoho
-
Well, I have made a start on the generator, there is a good video of one in operation on U tube.
Here are my techniques for forming circles in plastic card.
The first is a fairly new acquisition, it is the big brother to the punch used to make discs.
The second is the more usual, smaller punch set, I also have a rivet former bought 6 or so years ago at Telford, I actually have two of these, they did not work as well as they should and so the Hungarian company sent me a replacement, I used it to put rivets on WW1 tanks.
Lastly the trusty compass cutter, I have two of these.
I don't have the fancy one like Bill, so all my circles have a small hole in the centre.
There will be a few circles to cut.
-
Hi Zak,
Don't get too dizzy with all those circles.
If it was Msea, then dizzy might be a normal condition.
No doubt, I will be on the hit list from Msea, once the club meetings resume.
Something to look forward too.....
Cheers,
Bigkev

Todays effort at scratch building the generator.
-
Wow Zak,
Speed modelling in evidence.
Bigkev
-
Very impressive Zak - and quick.
I see from Kevin's comment about me that he is looking to get a more horrible model made of him, than the one I have done. Will have to go back onto Mighty Lancer web site to find one if that is possible - hohohoho

Will your next thing be a vintage lawnmower to cut the grass ???
Funny that you should mention that, as most fighter airfields were grass they must have cut and rolled it at the very least.
So, they must have had tractors and grass cutters, mostly this was done by contractors, but some airfields did have their own. Who knows, food for thought?

By the hairs on my chinny chin chin is a quote from somewhere I think.
Anyway back to modelling.
The generator is coming along.
It will be painting and then onto the searchlights.

All I can say is EXCELLENT

All I can say is wow!

Superb!!

I am blushing again, many thanks for the comments.
I have added some wheels, the whole lot was on a trailer.

Generator painted and completed
-
When do you turn professional ????
-
Hi Dave,
That's an incredibly quick turnround from starting the model to it being finished and painted!
Wonderful!
Have you started on the searchlight yet????
Will it be finished by tomorrow!!??!!
Can't wait to see all your vehicles and buildings on display!

Phenomenal work Dave. Scrolling through this lot has bowled me over and occupied the last couple of hours very pleasantly thank you. I love the airfield maintenance kit used during the war and could be easily tempted to model many of them.

We all could learn a lot from Zak,
He takes an idea, and makes it into a superb model.
Nothing but respect.

Many thanks Francis, It has kept me almost out of mischief and trouble.
I was amazed just how much infrastructure was required to get a plane off the ground.
There is still plenty left to do, if I can sustain my enthusiasm.
-
I've just spent over half an hour following this from the first post to now and like Francis I'm overawed. Phenomenal work Dave. Glad I work in 1/72 so I can get away with a lot more. I don't have much room for dioramas (as in Tracy says I take up too much room!!) but do my best.
Are you charging Neil for all the work you've done?

I am awaiting a delivery of some figures to go in my searchlight pit. It has been 8 days since they were sent, but nothing has arrived yet, I did order some peas online and they arrived yesterday.
I have contacted the sender, but am in limbo.
So on with the searchlights.
I will not post pictures of the build as you will have got the idea of the techniques used so far, it will be just more of the same.
I am also going to scratch build a Thornycroft ZS/TC4 4x2 searchlight carrying truck as well.
I intend to make two searchlights, one for the pit and one for the truck to be unloading.

SELF INDULGENT.
Sorry, in a moment of idleness, yes I know, I thought I would set up a diorama, well here is the result.
Motor Transport for an Airfield.
I have even included one of those things with wings for you aircraft types!

Brilliant! Love it!!!
Dioramas really bring the models to life.
I've got my boxes of (1/48) pilots and ground crew figures 'out of storage' and am looking at making them up and matching them up to diorama scenarios.
Dave, you're Mr Motivator!

Yes, I should, but I was worried that I might overdo it, remember all those beautifully clean aircraft that our club members built, surely they did not drip oil?
I will do at some stage Tony, a light pass with a wash in the airbrush or some pastel weathering perhaps?

Have you tried "spattering" different colours with a tooth-brush, it's a bit random but effective.
Haddock.

Excellent. I especially like the pebble-dash on the buildings.

Excellent dioramas Dave.

When do you move out to live in the shed , so that you have enough room in the house to put ALL the items you have made for the BofB ???????

You won't be putting any of my aircraft in then, I don't do factory finishes, lol!!!

Here are two 90 cm searchlights, they are not quite exact as the plans were very sketchy, but a representation.

No, sorry, I did think about it, but had no LED's left.

I am going to use the Tamiya 1:48 British ones.

Really good!
Hi Howard, the 1:48 figures are tiny.
-
Regarding pilot and ground crew figures, the ones that come in the Airfix 'WWII RAF Ground Crew' set are huge by comparison to the Eduard, ICM and white metal Dartmoor Military Models examples...
Painting small (1/48 scale) figures is a whole new modelling discipline for me so if anyone has got any advice/suggestions they would be most welcome!

I have painted the figures and added them to the diorama. I am not sure about the placing of the generator, but modellers licence needed it to go on the diorama.

It passes the time during these strange times, what else could I be doing, not housework or decorating, heaven forbid.
After the rain, the weeds will be having a field day down the allotment, so plenty to do there no doubt.
Next it will be some sort of airfield tractor, I believe the David Browns were later and mainly on Bomber Airfields.
It will be based on a Fordson, but not exactly.
This is because the Accurate Armour one is no longer in production and I failed with an order to Matador.

We will have to hire the Rix Pavilion so you can display this fully, nice work Dave.

Just think when I do the Virtual Models on the Table slot on the web site - Dave will need a lot of space for what he has done since last month.
Thinking about it the page was for what you would have brought to the meeting and he only has a small car so would NOT be able to get all that stuff in it, he would need at least 2 articulated lorries !!!!!!

Scratch built, sort of generic flyboys sports car, based on an MG.

Just to keep Martin Happy, here is a picture during the build.
This is a car from the film, no plans, just some photos, the car still exists albeit in a different colour, it is now green. There are quite a lot of different Alvis 12/60 Sports around, this is a 1931 version,
This is my best guess, I think it may be a bit wide, but it is too late now.
The car has been rebodied in 1950's.
Alvis used different coach builders, so they are all a bit different.
This was by Carbodies?
I bought some new Milliput - turquoise - very trendy. It sets better than my old stuff.
Look at the rear end.

Colourfull and fast - what more could we wish for !!!????

Steering wheel, dashboard and wheels.
Undercoat and then white top coat.

As far as I can make out, the grass was cut and rolled, particularly on grass airfields.
This was often done by contractors but sometimes the RAF had their own machinery.
I hope your lawn mower is a nice RAF blue though.
Have a look on page 23 of this theme.

First prize, well done, an Austin 12/4 from 1937.

Will it be painted black??? or rainbow coulours with adverts all over it as seen in London these days.......very sad if you ask me.
-
Here you go Dave, claimed to be 85 squadron's crew taxi at Church Fenton in September 1940. The Apocryphal tale is it appeared at Church Fenton after a night out in Leeds, was concealed on the base for a time before reappearing camouflaged in dark earth/dark green with the 85 squadron checkers and a roundel on the doors. Apparently it never ventured to Leeds but was frequently spotted in York.
-
Many thanks for this Francis, I was going to make it as the one in the BOB film, where they are in London at a bombed out street.
But this is certainly a novel idea, a crew taxi, well I never.
More progress, the wings were formed from green stuff around a former.
It is quite an odd filler.
-
I think Francis has a good idea for the colour of your taxi Zak - it will link in with the other vehicles etc.
-
Yes that'll be different.

You could also have a drunk hanging out of the taxi - very realistic - hohohoho

Mostly undercoated and in parts.
I need to paint the interior and make the hood at the rear.
I am pondering the colour?
Black as a taxi or camouflage as the Church Fenton one?
-
Camouflage please
-
I'm with Martin, camouflage with roundel and squadron colours.
-
A camouflaged taxi would be very different.
-
I'm with Martin, camouflage with roundel and squadron colours.
What were the squadron colours - all the photos on the web of the taxi seem to be post WW2?
-
Squadron colours for the taxi are a bit of a conundrum if the date I've been quoted for the photo is correct. Of the squadrons [71, 73, 85, 87, 249, and 306] stationed at Church Fenton during the Battle of Britain period the only one with chequer board colours was 85. Now their colours were red and black which doesn't look credible on the taxi photo, even allowing for orthochromatic film.
If we ignore the claimed location then it's possible the taxi could belong to 19 Squadron whose colours are white and pale blue. Fortunately they were very active during the Bob show so the camouflaged taxi with flashes would still fit the picture.
Lastly an idea for a diorama that I came across in my 85 squadron file.
-
Thanks for the information.

Hi Kiwichappers,
I was looking at your picture of the said 'Taxi'.
I think that probably 19 Squadron would fit the bill, pale blue and white chequers, though its location does not fit. The colours of red and black would not probably not show as they are in the picture, being too light in tone and variance between the two.
If I remember right 85 Squadron badge was a 'hexagon' or something similar?
A great picture though of things liberated by the RAF into service, by what/any means.
Cheers,
Bigkev

The photos that appear on the Church Fenton website are all from the 1950's, so from when the taxi was used I don't know. It also states that it was used by 19 squadron.
Maybe a bit of poetic licence, as it seems like a pre-war taxi.
-
Either way it will be an interesting addition.

Home made decals, using white transfer paper and an inkjet printer and a coat of gloss varnish.
They are a bit thick but the best I could do.
The model needs a coat of varnish and glazing and mirrors as well.
The figure is just cos!
-
Looking good Dave. Up tp you usual standard.
-
Meanwhile, in between paint and transfers and glue drying I decided to attempt a Bedford OY GS truck.
I am struggling with this as I can't quite get the cab right.
-
Well it looks OK to me - but what do I know !!!!!

Taxi finished.
Nearly forgot a photo.

Dave,
Your 19 Squadron taxi...
Brilliant!
I love it!!!
Where did you get the inspiration for that from?
I MUST make some 19 Squadron Spitfires now to place around it!

It was posted a few days ago, have you been taking isolating to a new, higher level....

Hi Zak,
Have you looked at Aerobonus (by Airies) on Hannants?
There are some RAF figures that might be of interest to you, especially drivers of vehicles.
Worth a look maybe?
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Thanks Kevin,
Yes I saw the figures, but baulked at the price.
-
Refuelled and ready to go.
-
Excellent!
-
When you lay it all out in position -- how large an area does it take up ???????
Is Neil paying by the area taken up or the number of models ????? and will you need smelling salts for him when you present your bill ???????

No cost, just undying gratitude, there are several areas, one about 6 ft x 4 ft and another 3x2 or thereabouts.
I am not sure that I would take it all anywhere all at once.
So one area is the hangar, control tower and the MT sheds, the other is the dispersal pen.
Neil et al also have some scenic bases for control towers and sheds to go on. The overall size of the BOB display was supposed to be 60 ft x 4 ft at Telford I believe.
-
Thanks for that Zak - but I still think Neil should cough up - hohohoho
-
I've already had one heart attack, and all this talk of PAYING is starting to raise the old blood pressure again!
By the time Dave has finished producing Battle of Britain buildings and vehicles etc, he'll be able to fill TWO 60ft x 4ft displays!
I may even run out of Spitfires and Hurricanes to populate the dioramas!
As everything is in modular form, as Dave mentioned, different buildings/vehicles/aeroplanes could be used to create different dioramas...
... the world is our lobster.............!
Tally Ho!

Hi, Francis, all better now - only Francis will understand this, earlier photos are ok.
-
Excellent, just thought it didn't
warrant a full blown public debate.
-
More progress, some details added to the taxi, mirror and wipers.
More progress on the truck, rivets on the rear and fuel tanks under construction.
-
Really excellent work, if Telford doesn’t happen we should have a full viewing.
Bob c
-
Progress, canvas (well brown paper) tilt added.
Interior to cab as well.
-
Holy sh**. Just catching up.
Wonderful Dave.
I've just started my Blenheim. Pics to come this week.
Andy.

Hi Dave,
Great stuff, as we have come to expect from the master.
We have been spoilt well and truly by this post.

I have a couple of BOB aircraft if I could be bothered.
Both 1:48, a Defiant and a Spitfire.

I think Neil has some catching up tp do. Wonder when we'll get a chance to see it all in the flesh?
-
As long as its the models in the flesh NOT Neil in the flesh - now going to try and get that image out of my head - I blame you Chris - hohohoho
-
Sploshing on some paint.

That looks real good.
Your bloody cleaver.

A cleaver is a really big chopper(axe).

Can these figures really be the same scale?
Tamiya British Infantry
Dartmoor Models Mechanic.
At 1/4 inch = 1 foot, the ruler at the side gives some idea of the sizes.

Or Jaws from the James Bond films.
-
On Steroids?
Transfers added and matt varnish.
Needs glazing, wing mirrors and a few extras adding.
-
Just about finished, no weathering - sorry.

Whether to weather?

Whether to weather?
Whether or not to weather is the question?

Another excellent scratch built model Dave.
-
Thanks Chris.
I have been trying to put together some smaller vignettes, here's one for Bill.
Captions on a postcard please and keep it clean.
Foibles to the fore.
Figures still to be painted, a work in progress.

"I'm feeling a bit grey today"
-
Brilliant Dave!
I've noticed the different 'sizes' of various manufacturers' figures... the ones in the Airfix 1/48 groundcrew ser scale out about 1/43rd scale!
Been doing a bit of modelling outside on the patio table this afternoon, trying to catch up with your output Dave...
... but failing miserably!

Keep trying, I may now have peaked and BOB modelling is nearing an end - just preparing you all.
-
I am busy painting figures at the moment and so nothing much to show really. I did attempt another taxi but am not very pleased with the results.
The windows were glazed with Humbrol Clear and I am not that impressed with my efforts.
Note to self - must do better - always on my school reports " Could do better, must apply himself more". No not as a pupil as a teacher.
-
That's a hell of an area to glaze with PVA!
Or have I misunderstood what you have done.
Haddock.

Haddock.
No, you have understood, Humbrol Clearfix is clear and an air drying glue, if it is persuaded to span a gap it usually sets as a window, maybe the area was a bit big, I have done it in 1/76 with success.
Here is a figure so far.
-
If possible I'll cut clear perspex to size and then glue with Clearfix etc. Kristal Klear for smaller windows.

Hi Dave,
I think you have done the Battle of Britain period proud...
... and in an area that very rarely (if ever) gets modelled... ground crew vehicles and buildings... AND figures!
The only consolation is that the Battle of Britain's loss will be some other area of modelling/history's gain...
It'll be interesting to see what takes your fancy and imagination next.

Thanks, knitting maybe.
-
I wait with anticipation !!!!!!
-
Not quite ready to knit yet, a few things to finish off.
More figures painted.
Enjoying the NAAFI van.
Maybe I will have to build an aircraft or two.
-
If you take up knitting Zak -- I have a mental image of you during the French Revolution, sitting by the guillotine with the other old biddies knitting and watching the aristocrats heads fall into the basket -- or will that image and spreading it around the web site get me into trouble - hohohohoho
-
I had a few minutes to spare this morning after digging the allotment, doing the crossword and some modelling, the pictures show the result, Oh I also Skyped Australia.

Still no sign of the wind-up gramophone! but I do have a certain M. Caine nearly ready for you. Just adjusting the accent!

Thanks Bill.
I am sorry to disappoint you, but I have decided to have another go at a Fordson Tractor.
Here is a start on the engine.
-
More bits of plastic stuck together.
-
Looks like the Battle of Britain is not quite finished yet then in the Zak output!
Loved the NAAFI van...
... and essential item on any RAF airfield!
Wonderful.

-
Hi Zak,
Nice to see another creation in the making.
Love the NAAFI diorama.
Cheers,

-
Here are the rear wheels, they are 6 discs of 30thou plastic card stuck together.
The raised portions are plastic strip.
I have not decided how to do the treads yet.
-
Excellent wheels - now what shall I make so I can make my own wheels for ????????
-
The choice is limitless, well only limited by your imagination - so no limit.
I find the available information limiting.
I found a really good site for my tractor, it's just gone offline? Sods Law as usual.
-
There seemed to be two choice (for me, anyway) for the treads, either the green stuff or plastic strip.
I was mixing some green stuff for the rear axles as they are sort of conical. and thought I would try some on the tyres, it failed, stuck to me too much, so it will be thin plastic strips.
Here is the engine and rear axle so far.
-
So I went with the thin plastic strip for the tyre treads.
-
Splendid!
-
Front wheels, three layer of plastic card and added detail.
-
Fuel tank and radiator.
-
Hi Dave, how long did it take you to do the tyre treads? They are amazing.
You have certainly given me some enthusiasm to have a go at a diorama sometime. Just working upto an idea.
Chris

I'm not sure really Chris, time just disappears when I start modelling, probably 3 hours, but that is a guess.
-
Not much modelling today, busy down the allotment.
My reference website is up and running again - breathes a sigh of relief.

Them treads look fantastic.
Ace.
Andy.

More engine detail added.
-
Continuing progress, sticking bits of plastic together.
-
Splendid!
-
Amazing!
-
More detail added to the engine and chassis, levers, pedals, throttle, dial, steering wheel, exhaust and air intake.
This is a petrol tractor.
I once worked on a farm, as a raw 16 year old lad, they had a Ferguson tractor that started on petrol and then you switched to T.V.O (tractor vapourising oil - paraffin), the exhaust was vertical and should have had a flap over the exhaust to stop water getting in. I was told to get the tractor, and did not want to seem the raw lad, so I did not ask about it. On switching on and turning the engine over a cloudy of oily water came out the exhaust and covered me - much to the amusement of the other workers.
Once you got it running on petrol and the engine was warm you switched over to TVO.
Callow youth - served me right.
-
Another class in 'How to Model'. Great work. I like how you made the front wheels and may copy the idea for something that's in the pipeline. Thanks for the inspiration.

It's a pleasure, just stick those bits of plastic together.

But you stick them so well

Tractor undercoated and shown next to the original.
The second picture shows a roller (compactor) under construction - one will pull this across the grass, the other the fuel bowser.
-
That's a great looking model, and with a grass compacter too boot!
Bigkev
-
Is that flat or angle iron for the frame? I'll be making a frame in the future.
-
I used flat, but many rollers also had angle iron frames, this is based on an old Britains one.
-

Hi Zak,
It looks good to me whether flat or angle-iron. I can just imagine it trundling up and down the runway, with some 'erk driving the tractor.
Have a house point!

Great work Dave, you must have more equipment than the rear RAF.
-

Thanks Bob.
Nearly, but this may be it, for now.
-
Can't be the end - you still have not made a zombie running around the airfield - hohohoho
-
Transfers being added, then a coat of varnish, so what next?
I think a tractor in a different scale perhaps.
-
We're going to have some of the best stocked (and best kept!) airfield dioramas that have ever been modelled.
I even did a bit of modelling myself this afternoon...
... sanding down the join lines on a Specail Hobby Fiat BR.20...
... on the patio in the sunshine!
keep safe and keep modelling ya'll,

Absolutely spectacular Dave! I'm Speechless ,really!

All these modern things (aircraft) are a bit beyond me, but where does a Fiat BR.20 fit in the BOB scheme of things?
-
Another great model from Dave.
-
Not quite finished yet, I added some plug leads and wires as well, not that easy in this scale.
The last photo is a Revell Packard.
-
Hi Red Lancer,
The Italian Corpo Aereo Italiano (CAI) – a task force sent by Mussolini to "help" the Luftwaffe in October/November 1940 had
Fiat BR.20s as their main bomber.
I foolishly decided that it would be good to build 'something different', but the kit isn't very good and is fighting me all the way, as some kits sometime do...

Thanks Biggles. I never knew about that. I bet the Luftwaffe was really chuffed!
-
Hi Red Lancer,
The Luftwaffe was SO pleased they sidetracked the Italians to airfields in Belgium to try and keep them out of the way...
As you might have guessed they didn't do very well and suffered quite badly at the hands of RAF fighters...

NAAFI Van again.
It's amazing

There is a Bit in this months Scale Aviation Mag informing WW11 diorama builders that ICONICAIR
are about to release a resin David Brown Tugmaster Tractor, which was used to haul the bomb trolleys.
Apparently they do bomb trolleys as well.
There is no mention of scale, which is pretty unbelievable for a Model Mag!
-
It's also in SAMI with no scale given but a quick online search says it's 1/32 scale.
-
Hi all, this diorama and models are sitting on my back bedroom wardrobe and it looks like time to move them on.
I will probably try EBay.
They are mostly 1:48.
If you are interested then e mail me.
They did appear in the IPMS magazine over two issues.
I may consider posting my e mail address later for non members.

For anyone interested in any of the models, you can contact me at
