I decided to start a new thread about the Coble.
This may or may not evolve into a diorama as Tony suggested.
A beach scene with a boat, shed and method of hauling the boat out of the water.
The coble was scratch built using old cereal packets, a bit of balsa and a lot of superglue.
On the tractor diorama there was some discussion about the naming of parts, this sort of continues from there.
-
Diagram showing the names of some of the parts.
Each coble between the Humber and the Tweed has its own particular peculiarities.

Will this thread come with a dictionary ??????

These are from the Smith Archive, C1990 or thereabouts.

Pictures from North Landing?
Good start Dave.

Yes, North Landing.

Hi Zak,
A nice different model to look forward to.
And something with a topical local flavour.
Looking forward to seeing your creative skills on this one.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Cheers Kevin, I am not sure how this will develop.
-
Here is the shed, made from thick card and then cereal packet bricks added.
-
Another great item in the offing, even if you did cobble it together!! Well done.

Hi Zak,
Chris's puns are as bad as mine.
But this is going to be another startling build, I can feel it.
'Bempton's Best' is on the build again.....
Cheers,
Bigkev

Remember it is a COBLE not a cobble.
-
Progress on the COBLE and the small building.
-
Wow, the cobble looks splendid.
Haddock.
-
Just some words to inspire you.
Old engines (rusty).
Pot winches (rusty)
fish boxes.
fish baskets.
Dahn buoys.
various floats.
drift-wood.
coils of rope.
scrap-iron.

Very useful, many thanks, what is a Dahn buoy?
A pole with a bladder about halfway up, flag at the top and a weight at the bottom to make it float upright.
Used to mark the ends of fleets of pots or lines in the case of fishermen or anything else that needed to be marked. Seine net fishermen used one to mark the "ship end" of the anchor gear. Used in the Navy for all sorts so its not just a fishing term. End of a fleet of herring nets was called the "pole end". The poles on the cobbles at Flamborough are carrying what could be termed "dahn buoys" although they would probably have their own term. Just a marker buoy really.
Haddock.
-
Great modelling and educational at the same time, loving it!!! That explains why the fishermen keep pinching the bamboo poles we use when bird ringing, to make those dahn buoys :(
-
The intention was to make a building/ storage shed for the fishermen to keep their bits and do a bit of fettling when the weather was too poor to venture out to sea, but this looks too posh.
It may have to be saved for something else, but I will finish it, so Coble landing may be on hold for a short time.
I envisaged a chalk building with brick at the corners and so on.
-
Looking good though.
-
I agree,
Zak, did you use to work for 'Wimpy', you seem to be too good at this building lark.
Bigkev

No, but I used to go in Wimpy Bars in my youth.
-
Looking good as ever.

I am in the process of trying to build a "Haddock" style shed, more in keeping with the fishing angle.
This will be wooden with a corrugated, rusty roof and tar streaked boards.
I have another project in mind for the "posh" shed.
-
Now that looks more in keeping with the position it will be placed - looking forward to the RUST - hohohoho
-
Started rusting, more work still needed.
-
Looking good, I like things that look beaten and weathered (no comments about Tracy please, lol!!!).
-
Looking good, the posh one could be a lifeboat house. Be liberal with the tar.
Haddock.
-

Haddock.
Too small, it may become someones workshop.
-
It all looks great again!
-
When is enough rust enough?
It is very difficult to decide, but will leave it like this and see what I think about it in a day or two.
-
Do not understand -- how can you have too much rust - hohoho
-
Rust looks good. Been out in the rain a lot!
-
You know, that is what my mum used to say to me, being a ginger head (when I had hair).
-
Before I got side tracked by Haddock into something by the sea, I was building a motorcycle for a small diorama. Then I thought some of the fishermen would like an old bike, so I include it here and hence the amended title.
This is a 1/35 Thunder Models Indian 741B, but built in civilian mode, quite a bit of etched brass, especially for the wheels.
I have added the stays to the front mudguard as extras so far.

Thought you might say that. Be liberal with the tar.
-
WOW!
How do you do it...
Andy.
-
Still amazing Dave.
-
Spent an hour or two building these workshop tools and fitments, just need to paint them now.

An hour or two???.... it takes me longer than that to decide whether I can be bothered or not!

That must be it, no thinking, just do it.
Picked a bucket full of peas and podded them this afternoon, a couple of lbs of strawberries and raspberries as well, now I might do a bit of modelling.
-
Well, some progress, lean to added to the posh shed, a perfect motorcycle storage area.
Too much hoeing and other stuff at the moment,.
-
Stunning.
Haddock.
-
I agree with Tony.
-
Ditto, I'm awestruck yet again!!!
-
Thanks guys, I have another Indian motorcycle to add and the interior of the building to do.
-
Even more magic
-
No Longer Zak,
It's now 'Diorama Dave!!'
Excellent.
Bigkev
-
Looking good, how about a few fishermen!
-
Looking good, how about a few fishermen!
Give me a chance.
-
This is the workshop/posh shed almost finish, just a few more tools, oil cans and so on the add to the interior.
The roof can be removed to look inside.
-
Amazing, really amazing!
-
Brilliant Dave.
-
Once again, thanks.
Now it is back to the Coble Landing, I bought this to build as a Tractor/crawler/bulldozer to pull the coble(s) up the beach.
This is from MiniArt.
It will be finished in Civilian livery.
-
You ought to try and source a gull to sit on the coble, they'll all be heading back to the seaside now the tourists are out in force!!
p.s. just to be pedantic there's no such thing as a seagull, it's a misnomer.
-
Several companies supply them.
I will see what I can find.
Oh no, not another pedant!
Here is the engine being built, 48 parts so far.
-
Really nice detail, CATERPILLAR cast into the engine block, anotherv30+ parts added, the eyes need a rest now.
Impressive moulding on this kit.
-
Not surprised your eyes needed a rest.
-
While my eyes recover, I decided to have a go at a cliff face for Coble Landing.
This is layers of packing card, cut up and applied and then coated with ceiling texturing material.
It will require a few coated and some judicious painting.
-
More parts added to the engine.
The thin plastic is quite delicate.
-
Another Masterpiece in the making.
Bigkev
-
Sub assemblies, some of the many, still lots to do.
The tracks could be interesting.
-
Tracks, say no more.
-
Tracks put me off making tanks.
-
Looks like a very nice kit.
Haddock.
-
Looks like a very nice kit.
Haddock.
It is, modern moulding techniques, crisp parts mostly, the odd hole in the track links to clear out.
Very nice.
-
Separate links always look better than the old 'elastic band' type of tracks. A lot of work but I think they look a lot better, you have a better chance of getting them to sit properly. Looking forward to seeing how this progresses.
-
Looking good.
-
The beach and sea at Coble Landing start to take shape.
The sand is real sand - from North Landing at Flamborough.
The sea is just paint at the moment.
The coble is for effect.
-
Slow progress, hay fever or something is really bothering me, bad head and sore eyes.
-
Very atmospheric.
Nice work,
Bigkev
-
The cliffs are looking OK

"judicious painting"....not sloshing it on then?

Call it what you will!
-
I agree with Kevin; very atmospheric.
-
A few more details added to the coble, nets, rope and so on.
The coble is named after two of my granddaughters - their middle names anyway.
-
That's really great Dave. Are there going to be any figures?
-
That's really great Dave. Are there going to be any figures?
Hopefully, there will at least be a driver for the caterpillar tractor pulling out the coble.
-
The tractor is taking shape, eyes are a little better today, but still not right.
Here is the Caterpillar tractor so far.
-
If that's with bad eyes what will you do when they are 100% OK ?????
-
Tractor in position, still lots to do on it, just seeing how it all fits.
Closer up view of the tractor - and a driver, especially for you Chris.
This last photo of the underside is especially for Martin - this is rusted using the Vinegar/wire wool mix.
-
Great looking rust, an't wait to see the finished item.
-
Both with the figure and rust looking good. I've learnt someting today - vinegar and wire wool - that's neat.
-
But take care, watch this first
https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=rusting&&view=detail&mid=839E5D61A47346E08539839E5D61A47346E08539&&FORM=VRDGAR&ru=%2Fvideos%2Fsearch%3Fq%3Drusting%26FORM%3DHDRSC3
Some nasty fumes given off at the start.
Here is a bit more progress, tracks painted with under colour still more rusting needed.
It is all becoming rather large, the finished diorama will be over 3 ft long.
Maybe an ideal opportunity to add a narrow gauge railway, time will tell.
-
Love the rust
-
Pegs, especially for Martin.
Figures undercoated.
Tractor distressing in progress.
-
The tractor is just about finished, the tracks have had some sand added and rust as well.
The shed is now in place on the scene.
-
I really like the shed. Did the lifebelt come from Croppers? I got mine from there.
-
I really like the shed. Did the lifebelt come from Croppers? I got mine from there.
Yes, it may be a touch overscale though. I bought two, there is one on the coble as well.
-
Figures painted and added to the scene, some rubbish added around the shed, just building some lobster pots.
-
Lobster pots made from wire card and some netting. All sprayed black, they look a bit worse for wear, a bit like me.
-
If you put faces on the front of the pots it could be a committee meeting - hohohohoho
-
A really excellent diorama Dave. The figures look real good.
-
Brilliant!!
Like the tractor.
Andy.
-
Looking Great!
You are going to need the whole of Cass Hall, NO Rix Pavilion to display your projects when we can all meet up again.
-
Like the pots, very realistic.
Haddock.
-
Thanks again for the comments.
-
Even real Flamborough Head chalk, gets in on the act.
The raw stuff,
Crushed up and placed at the bottom of the cliff.
-
Have you put a snotter in the crab pot?
Haddock.

I wish I knew what a snotter was?

It slides up and down the bait band to hold the bait in place, made out of old fishing line.

If anyone asks me what a 'Snotter' is I now have the answer.
See, the benefits of belonging to such a diverse modelling club.

Hi Zak,
I was there on Sunday, and I noticed that the chalk had eroded a little bit since my last visit, now I know why.
The diorama looks great.
Bigkev
-
Thanks Kevin, you bumped into Neil as well I hear.
A social distancing bump obviously.
-
A narrow gauge railway at coble landing, well it might just happen.
In 1/35 scale, OO track scale out at about 2 ft, the sleepers will have to be hidden.
The two locos shown are from my WW1 building days. One of them actually works.
This may lead on the a second board and have a permanent place in my modelling room. if I can fit it in.
Sandra wasn't amused when I suggested I could take over another bedroom.
-
Busy laying cobbles/bricks at the moment, this may take some time.
-
Looking great - will not go down the cobblers to you route - hohoho
-
It is Cobbles at Coble landing. Punny or what?
-
Right on!
-
WOW!
I can’t keep up with your phenomenal output!
You seem to make a new model every day!
You’re already on page 8 with your ‘Beside the Seaside’ diorama thread!
I hope you do manage to make it a permanent display in your model room(s)!!!! (Sandra notwithstanding!)
Biggles
-
Sorry, not much to add, still laying cobbles, and you may not like a model railway on here, but that's what it will be. It is still modelling and in 1:35 scale to boot.
-
Extension to Coble landing.
This will become Silex Works.
Silex Bay,what used to be Selwick Bay at Flamborough.
Silex is also a form of rock/sand - I will let you look it up.
-
I see its going the same way as some of your other models - not only excellent but getting larger and larger and larger. How many tables would this take up when its finished if you took it to the club meeting or a show ??????
-

Too many, I intend to make this "model railway" a permanent display in my modelling room - hopefully.

Two ex-WD Simplex locos await deployment.

Is your model room like the Tardis - expands to fit ALL your models ??????????
-
Your modelling room must be the size of an aircraft hanger!!! I've all on finding room for my 1/72 scale stuff and that includes 3 display cabinets in the garage. Looks like another great diorama in the offing.
-
Yes looks great. Far too big for me. Now I know why I stick with 1/72nd.
-
Most of my built models are on the loft in boxes.

Hi Zak,
What most of the members don't know, is that all of 'those' models you have produced as been the catalyst for the the 'Dave Smith' tower of Bempton, akin to 'Trump Towers'
I can see it from Bridlington Hospital even now......
No doubt flying restrictions will follow very soon.
Cheers,
Bigkev

Bempton Towers, is quite low really.

Grassing and fencing work at the top of coble landing.
-
What did you use for the different grasses ?
-
What did you use for the different grasses ?
It is home made dyed sawdust, it was dyed with poster paints of different greens, many years ago.
It seems to go on and on,
-
Great stuff Dave,
using your railway modelling skill here...
Andy.
-
Looking good Dave.
-
Hi Zak,
Nice work on the grasses, at least you will be able to show the differing textures and colours of grasses. Despite to common belief, all grasses and foliage is 'different'.
Keep it coming.
Cheers,
Bigkev
-
Excellent Dave.

More stunning stuff!

And building at an incredible rate! The rest of us have much to catch up on.
-
And he does that including a lot of scratch building. Fantastic.
-
Well 1/35 is 8.709 mm = 1 foot, so OO gauge track has a gauge of 16.5mm, so it is about 2ft.
So I have been scratch building a coach in 1/35 scale on the lines of the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.
Here it is undercoated, running on Hornby OO bogies, I still need to come up with a livery.
Completely out of card of various thicknesses.
It is about 1 ft long, I need a few more and a loco to pull them, then a model railway layout to run them on, it never stops!
-
Have you gone down from 20 minutes sleep a day, to only 5 minutes a day ???????? that's the only way I can figure out your speed of construction.
-
It's amazing built out of card. Hats off to you Dave.
-
That was the prototype, this is number two.
This will help to show how it was built.
I have used various card overlays to get the detail on the coach side.
Three or four of these overlays have the apertures cut in them and then they are all glued together.
I always give card a coat of shellac to help stabilise it a little.
This one has slightly thicker card for the interior side of the coach, this may be a mistake, it was much easier to cut thinner card and it may be better to glue several thinner ones together in future.
I bought the bogies from Cropper, I need to go back and buy the rest of his stock and some brass wire as well.
The prototype coach still needs glazing, door handles, grab rails. foot steps and so on adding, and painting of course.
This all happens as I wait for the car to dry and so on.
-
Blown away - that's all I can say.
-
I still think the cardboard construction is amazing. Do you get the 'plans' off the internet Dave?
-

No, out of books and then resized on the printer.
-
Amazing!
I may have missed it in the previous pages but just how big is this diorama?
Is there a Lighthouse?
-
Amazing!

O, oh...!
Now you've done it.
As we speak, Zak, is contemplating his next addition.
Bigkev
-
Did someone mention a lighthouse?
Here is one.
Sadly the wrong scale, but thanks for the idea..............................
-
HOW that's all I am going to say.
-
HOW that's all I am going to say.
It was something from the stash, from when I was building small 1/350 dioramas of the Humber Forts.
I bought it from Mighty Lancer, part of the Cruel Seas Range, it is resin. I thought it would make a nice diorama, but I never used it.
-
HOW that's all I am going to say.
This red indian bloke seems to pop up from time to time!
-
hohohohoho -- bet you have a horse called silver ???????
-
Here is a bit more of the coach.
Painting.
-
The coach looks good.
John Cook has a lighthouse....you may be able to borrow it.
Come to think of it though, you've probably built one today by now.

John's is the wrong scale as well.
But, a nice idea.
-
More snippets to help with future modelling. All I need now is a spares box like you and MSea and things can start to move followed by the space to put everything in!!
-
Yes, Daves diorama is getting bigger by the hour!
-
It's like the 'Big Bang' of Bempton.
His modelling universe keeps expanding, and at some rate!

red shift or blue shift?
In my case it is the red/green shift - colour blindness problems.
-
Coach repainted, I did not like the white, it was a bit too stark, so have repainted in sort of ivory.
-
This is one to show James.
Like it,
Andy.
-
Can I have a tow back up the Hill?
-
It all looks good Dave.
-
It all looks good.

Looks amazing. The coach looks good. Will you be doing guided tours around it when finished?

Of course. when we can socialize!
