Next project folks. Got the kit from Croppers at a vey attractive price which enabled me to invest in some etched brass, wooden decks and metal barrels all at a reasonable cost for a ship of this size.
Now a bit of history which complicates matters.
In Feb 1944, the ship went into Liverpool for a major refit. The weapons and radar fit were upgraded and the aircraft were put ashore, the hangars were converted into accommodation for the crew and the ships boats relocated from the boat deck on the after island to the space that was occupied by the catapults for launching the aircraft. The refit was completed in mid July, she then spent about two months working up.
The camouflage scheme you see in the bottom two bits of the second pic is the Admiralty Intermediate Disruptive(AID) scheme, applied late 1942, the top bit is the scheme applied to all Battleships that formed the British Pacific Fleet which was in existence from Jan 1945.
My problem is that I don't know when the BPF scheme was applied, if it was during the refit then it would be historically incorrect to use the AID pattern with the ships boats as depicted in the kit. If later, then I can use the AID scheme and I'm a happy bunny.
I can't, as yet, find any evidence that answers my question.

Managed to get a bit of modelling done, just subassemblies and getting familiar with the kit.

Few more bits and bobs prepared ready for painting and popped in place. I've a feeling I'm in for a mammoth painting session unless I change my approach a bit.

I have to wonder, bearing in mind the quality of the Tamiya mouldings, is it worth bothering
with turned barrels. However, at £6 for 10 barrels from Croppers, you can't really go wrong..
so they're done.

Water-lined.
The white plastic is 3.2mm tube, it will be stuffed with 1/16" brass rod to stiffen it up.
Bit belt and braces but the whole lot is now quite rigid. All left to dry overnight with some
weight to hold it flat, hope it stays like that. The deck is in three pieces, the fit is brilliant.

I enjoy water-lining ships - its good fun hacking off great big bits of plastic.
I like the idea of the plastic tube reinforced with brass bar ---- will steal this idea alongside almost all the rest of the things you do.

I always do this with the decks taped in place and tube fitted and glued, that way you maintain the shape of the hull.
So.
Mark the position of the holes, preferably below the top of the boot-topping.
Drill holes and fit the tubes, no glue yet.
Tape the decks in position making sure everything is tickety-boo.
Now glue the tubes, thin super-glue or thin cement and allow to set. Leave a bit stuck out at each end.
Fit the brass rod, shorter than the width of the hull, secure with super-glue.
Remove the decks and run some super-glue round the inside tube to hull joint.
Now you can attack the hull with gay abandon, secure in the knowledge that it should hold it's shape.
Fit the decks, you can run thin styrene cement in from the inside of the hull giving a nice clean joint.
On a nice flat surface, plonk some weight on the decks and leave to cure, you should end up with a hull that is the same shape as moulded. and flat.
Now you can tidy up the ends of the plastic tubes with filler etc.

The superstructure isn't fixed in place, just dry fitted.

Starting to look busy now. Superstructure still not fixed.
Note the distressed condition of the paint on the hull, this took a while,
I'm still not sure about it but it's done now and sealed in place so I can't change
it without a complete, re-spray. Msea may recognise the picture that gave
me the inspiration to have a bash.
Next time consuming task is to build the masts out of brass instead of plastic
or a combination of both.

Progress is painfully slow, here's a couple of the reasons.
The railings around the gun deck consist of five individual pieces of three different pitches.
The platform atop the foremast gave me more problems than you can shake a stick at, it's just not designed to fit and a pig to bend and assemble.

Boat handling cranes added. Difficult to build due to the jib supplied in four separate pieces of brass. It would have been so much easier had it been one piece, folded an glued. Hey ho!

The little "fir tree" on top is the "identify friend or foe" antenna.
