I have looked at these kits from Inpact for some time and they were always above what I was prepared to pay for them.
I discovered some at a more reasonable price and decided to build them.
These kits originate from 1966 and are in 1:48 scale.
The first is the Deprerdussin 1911.
The kit was later produced by Pyro, Life Like Hobby Kits and then Lindberg.
Used by many flying schools this model depicts the version with a 50 HP rotary Gnome engine. It has a very shallow fuselage that was a mere 12 inches deep. It used wing warping for control. The sports variants won many races at the time.
Aircraft controls consisted of a wheel mounted on an inverted U-shaped yoke, the uprights of which were outside the fuselage structure. Fore and aft movement of the entire yoke operated the elevator and the wheel operated the wing warping. The rudder was controlled by pedals. The undercarriage consisted of a pair of trapezoidal frames, each braced by a diagonal member extended forwards to form a short upcurved skid to protect the propeller in the case of nose-overs, with a pair of wheels carried on a sprung cross axle between the two frames.
An example is held at the Shuttleworth Collection, but this has the Anzanti engine.
-
The kit was originally purchased from a Fenwick store for 3s/6d.
The moulding is sharp and parts are well moulded, very nice for a kit produced in 1966.
I started it before I took any photos, hence those above from Scalemates.
The instructions and exploded view lead to an easy and clear assembly sequence.
It has been suggested that bleached linen would be the appropriate colour with wooden undercarriage, I have just found a recipe that I may try – Tamiya XF2 x 10 + XF55 x1. I did, but added 1 x XF59 as it looked a bit gray.
Metal parts are light or dark grey as are the tyres.
On the Shuttleworth one, the fuel tank is brass, but this has the Anzani engine.
The kit suggestion is silver.

This will be interesting - models and history all in one.

I like to educate you Martin - is it still possible?

Nah!!
-
Still from the film "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines".
Information about the controls.
-
Assembly and painting in progress.
Parts are not attached simply in place.
I went with a silver tank.
I did try to shade the ribs but it does not show up very well.
I am still unsure about the colour for bleached doped linen.
On the real preserved examples it always seems to have a yellowish tinge - to my eyes anyway!
-
Looking GREAT - the yellowish tinge, is that how it was, or is that how it has aged on the preserved examples.
You could do 2 , one cream on the runway in 1911 about to take off and the second yellowish in a museum setting ;D ;D ;D

Will you buy me a second one?

I have 50 pence left in the bank after doing my room out at IKEA - would that do ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

I will collect tomorrow!
-
Just melting the chocolate to make the 50pence - hohohhoho
-
I have added some turnbuckles, that need painting, they may not show up on these photos as I have only done the ones under the wings as a trial.
-
Another great build. If you're not happy with the bleached linen look then you could lighten one of the available linen colours? I thought I'd seen a photo of one of these in my references but it doesn't appear to be in 'Wings over Yorkshire' which covers from the first planes here to the 1930s. Lots of different makes but not this one.
-
I have just reviewed a book and it gave the mixture as stated, but it looks a little grey.
In truth I am not sure about any colour.
Here we are, taking off, flying and landing.
-
Next it is the Bleriot Monoplane from 1908'
This is the version powered by the 35 hp Anzani, 3 cylinder engine.
-
Did you ever fly in one of these Zak - thought 1908 was about the correct date - hohohohohoho

I think you just beat me to it.
Hot air balloon for you - well hot air anyway. (Ha Ha)

If only it were this easy!

An excellently produced model Dave.
-
Bleriot under construction.
-
Looks like you've had to fettle lots of ejector pin marks. Our youngest son and his wife live below Dover Castle so we've been to the site where Bleriot 'landed'. It's more of an incline than it appears in photos,
-
Yes, lots of those.
Coming together .now
-
Looking great when is the first flight ::) ::) ::)

Now!

Finished.

Excellent - what is next ?

Trust you to ask!
Inpact Kits 1:48 Martin Handasyde 1910
This does look similar to an Antoinette, it is certainly of that type. It is a smaller and stronger aircraft with many interesting features.
The undercarriage had telescopic legs to each half axle, the weight was supported on a leaf spring below the axle.
A J.A.P (J.A. Prestwich) engine was used, so a radiator was not required and the oil was kept away from the pilot by a plate attached to the control column.
Direction was effected by wing warping. Martin Handasyde Monoplanes were made at Brooklands and were available in single and double seat versions, the 2-seater had a gnome engine fitted.
-
Excellent monoplane. The metal struts look great too as well as the rigging.
-
i like these a lot.
Bob c
-
Construction and painting underway.
-
More parts stuck together.
The large screen on the "joystick" is a shield to keep oil off the pilot - every convenience included!
-
Looking very nice.
-
Rigging, turn buckles still to be added and painted.
-
Next it will be the Bristol Boxkite 1910. A copy of the Henri Farman, but had more refined metal fittings. It was generally better built than the French produced Farman.
This was the Bristol and Colonial Aeroplane Company.
It should really be called The Bristol Standard Biplane.
-
The Handasyde looks great even if it does look like the pilots sat in a winged bathtub!! Lots of rigging and struts to keep you occupied with the Boxkite.
-
Finished.
-
Excellently finished there Dave. The Boxkite should be good.
-
Parts constructed on a template.
-
Hi Zak,
Keep 'em coming, they all look good.
Bigkev
-
Looking good so far.
-
More progress on the wings and tail plane.
Large Aluminium plate courtesy of the Brooklands Road Ship Yard. Or Haddocks den.
-
Tricky.
-
Normal service will resume when Sandra is better after her hip operation.
-
Hi Zak,
Hope that she gets back to her old self soon and she can then keep you under control...!

Nearly there - under control that is. Sandra is making good progress.
I just love ironing!
-
Good luck.

Oh great,
I'll send mine around whilst you are so positive....!

After a long break, it is back to the Bristol Box kite, this is quite large and fragile and so I have been allowing joints to fully cure before moving on. Ready for a coat of bleached dope.
-
Looks good though.
-
Rigging underway.
-
Very neat.
Haddock.
-
Rigging just about compete, drove me ,mad!
A few bits to tidy up and a coat of varnish still to be done.
-
Don't you mean "madder" yoyoyo - it looks great
-
Looks good.
Haddock.
-
Cripes! That's amazing Dave. It's exquisite. Is this for the Christmas competition?
-
Well after a few weeks off and having no modelling room I have decided to try to get back into it,
This is the last of this series:
The AVRO Triplane, 1910, designed by Mr. A.V. Roe. Originally fitted with a 9HP J.A.P engine, later models had the 35HP Green engine.
-
Some construction work started.
-
The Box Kite is a beautiful looking model.
Bob c
-
I think i would have given up trying to rig the Boxkite!! Well done. I like the ribs and frames on the Triplane.
-
More glueing and waiting.
-
Good to see some precision engineering taking place!
-
Good to see some precision engineering taking place!
Not from me, hard to get a straight wing on this triplane!
-
More wing warping!
-
While the glue cures/sets, I thought I would start this:
It is the Monogram Wright Brothers Kitty Hawk, described as 1:48 scale.
It contains 2 figures.
-
Lots of ejector pins marks to fill and sand.
-
Back to the AVRO - more progress, very hard to get all the wing parts to line up.
-
You will do it - I have FULL confidence in you ;) ;) ;) ;)
-
Some rigging done.
-
Well rigged that man - now what will Haddock say :o :o :o
-

Splendid!!
-
Looking good, the Kitty Hawk is a really old kit if I remember correctly.
Bob c
-
Yes, Bob, like me a very old kit!
-
Only as old as you feel.
Bob c
-
Some great modelling there Dave and exquisite rigging. Are you cross-eyed after that?
-
Just cross!
-
Finished at last, lots of rigging.
-
Another excellent model -- will we see it at club meeting
-
Probably, that and the box kite at the next meeting.
-
An excellent model Dave.
-
Tail plane assembly on the Wright Flyer.
-
Wings painted and assembled and some rigging started.
-
Was just thinking - did you see the Wright Flyer on its maiden flight ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
-
Of course, I waved at you, don't you remember.
More progress.
-
So you was the old man in the crowd - hohohohoh
-
So you was the old man in the crowd - hohohohoh
Now behave, better than being the old woman in the crowd,
Enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Just about finished, the pilot is still to paint and add.
This is certainly not 1:48 as described on the box.
-
Whatever scale it looks GREAT
-
Fabnstic work, as ever, on these early aircraft.
-
Superb model Dave. It certainly looks the part.
-
Pilot added, now complete.
I think that maybe it for early aircraft, but these do look tempting:

Excellent way to show the build - lots of skill needed in both the build and the animation - now when does yours arrive ?

It is just the price that is stopping me.
-
Brilliant model Dave.
