Well another scratch built model from history. Korean Admiral Yi Sun-sin used this type of ship when fighting the Japanese about 1592.
At the moment am sorting out the size and have decided to do it in 1/144 scale this will give a model of about 250mm long by 69mm wide. Have just fastened a couple of bits of wood together to make the former for the top cabin, this will be covered with thin strips of wood and plastic, then its onto the lower hull, masts and dragons head.
Have had this model in my head for a while and got the Osprey book to provide more info alongside the images on the internet I have found.
-
Totally Turtle!
-
Good luck with the Dragon!
Haddock.

Haddock.
Just need Zak to sit still for 10mins to get the correct likeness - yohoho
-
Just make sure the light is right and you get my best side.
-
You have a best side -- now I know you are joking -yohoho
-
I didn't say how good it was, only that it was ever so slightly better!
-
An interesting build Martin.

Can we call you Touche' Turtle from now on.
Bigkev
-
Top and bottom former cut to build the turtle ship around - well that's the idea at the moment.
Looks like this might be the model for Playday/DooDadDay/Modelday a week today.
-
That should keep you busy on Sunday.
-
Don't have time to be busy on Sunday - lots and lots and lots of talking to do - yohoho
-
Sorting out sizes for the cladding on the turtle ship - so I have all materials ready for the 10mins work that will be done on Sunday - yohoho
-
The 4 posts have been fitted and the blue plastic has been marked to represent planks and fitted to the sides of the ship. When it is all dry and hard will cut the sides down to shape and fit the extra balsa wood sections.
-
First photo tape removed and second one with the sides cut down to size
-
Ford and aft cross bars added - next job the curved bars for both sides.
-
Turtly magic!
-
Turtly driving me up the wall with the curved side bars >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
Top and bottom bars made and fitted to both sides of the ship - now for coffffeeeee and let the steam out of my room :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
-
Cross bars fitted when dry and solid will give final smooth down to shape on the balsa - also fill in any bits missing then drill out the holes for the cannons.
-
Getting there.
-
Ford and aft top wood curved bars fitted and a start made on fitting the top sections of iron plates.
-
Rest of the top sections added to the ship. When dry and solid will clean up the edges and also mark on the plate shapes and drill out for the spikes on each plate.
-
There's a lot of work in this one.
-
It has kept me quiet and away from humans - so some good has come from it - yohoho
-
Roof cut to shape and the holes for the ships cannons drilled out.
Now to listen to the Liverpool match - come on the reds -yohoho
-
The 2 mast housings have been added as well as the 4 hatches for working the masts. Before you say the masts are two long, it is just a test to get the correct angle.
-
Coming together nicely.
-
Seems very very slow to me - if I was Zak would have made about 6 of them by now Chris.

Yes, I'd have finished a similar number!
-
Zak has not done any modelling for about 7 weeks!
-
Zak has not done any modelling for about 7 weeks!
You have had MUCH more important things to do - so just get on and do them the plastic can wait - yohoho
-
First 15 anti-border spikes made and fitted ONLY another 52 to do - the joys of scratch building :o :o :o :o :o Why don't I just buy a kit and glue the bits together ::) ::) ::) ::) ::
-
Had to stop making spikes - think it was because I laughed at Zak when he got cramp in his hand at Playday - it has now happened to me and WILL NOT go away :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
-
Cramp gone and spikes finished - Card jig made for the side panels on the ship, 2 plastic sides made and now to scribe the planks on them - must remember to get the correct side scribed.
-
Sides made and fitted and a trial run with masts and flag pole.
-
Masochist.
-
Are you trying to say I work with a lathe - oh no that.s a machinist yohoho
-
Have tried a little rust colour on the top plates but not happy. So will coat with natural steel colour and then rust them up.
Before you say that it should be cast iron not steel - its only a model and think it will look better. Also the clever people are still arguing about what covered the ship - some say wood planks and iron darts, others all iron - so just being a simple modeler its read your research and take your pick. They also say that the top was covered with straw so the people jumping onto the ship did not know what was a metal dart and what was safe to land on - but I like the model without straw.
-
A coat of natural steel on the roof.
The block of wood is the start of the dragons head that goes on the front of the ship - well that's the plan at the moment, will see how it goes.
-
Have you sourced any figures to go on the turtle ship?
-
No figures - but as it was all closed up and the people where inside, can get away with no figures, just the ship and sea/waves to keep Haddock happy.
-
Looking very good Martin.

I'll be exctatic!!
-
it's looking good, but where do you get your ideas from.
-
it's looking good, but where do you get your ideas from.
Don't ask!
-
Dragons head cut to rough size - not happy , so will make another one.
Will try and cover this one with plaster of Paris and glue to enlarge the mouth ( this one looks like a duck ) and also let me carve in the eyes and other bits and bobs.
-
Are you quackers or what?
-
I will duck that question - yohoho
-
Silly wuestion but would you be better off with a nicer piece of wood?
Haddock.
Or even something like Fimo modelling clay.
-

Haddock.
Or even something like Fimo modelling clay.
Or even a shaped inner from plastic/ metal padded out with filler?
-
First 8 corner reinforcing plates made from paper fitted to the gun ports - only another 62 to do - think I should come up with ideas and then sleep on them before starting and decide if they are worth it :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
-
The other 62 reinforcing plates now fitted. Also the gun barrels and the 12 oars made, next job make the base and fit the ship to it and then add waves.
-
The scratchbuilding that goes on within the Club is an inspiration. Memo to self 'Must try harder'. Fantastic job Martin.
-
Thanks Chris - its the only way to keep what is left of my brain working at its normal 19% efficiency - yohoho
-
19%? That high, hard to imagine.
-
I exaggerate a little well -- 19% actually
-
A lot of work Martin but I'm sure it'll be worth it.
-
We will see in the end - but at least its FUN and keeps me away from normal people - yohoho
-
Base cut and first layer of filler added
-
Black flag made, next job is to paint the sign that says turtle on it in Korean - if my painting is not good and it says something else, very sorry.
-
Flag painted hope its says what its supposed to say - my Korean is a little rusty.
-

Ancient or modern?
-
Eastern written languages such as Chinese and Japanese (Kanji - Chinese writing) are stylised pictograms so your effort will pass muster.
-
Thanks Chris x 2 - now should I have a couple of dead bodies stuck on the spikes and who would they look like - yohohoho
Outer frame now made, just needs priming and a coat of black paint.
-
Your getting there.
-
Yes but very slow
-
Looking good Martin.
-
Ship with base and outer frame now done
-
Oars, cannons and flag mast added
-
Looking the part Martin.
-
Coat of gel on the sea
-
Come on where is the dragon?
-
Come on where is the dragon?
Posting on the web site at 3.36- yohoho
-
Sea looks a bit frothy!
-
Wood head changed to remove the section on the top of the head and some horns added, the white bits of plastic on the wood block will be teeth added to the jaw when its all covered with model cley. Well hats the plan at the moment we will see how it looks when finished :o :o :o :o :o
-
A good start on the head Martin. We wait with baited breath.
-
Hats the plan?
Spull chucker agin?
-

Spull chucker agin?
YUS - hohohho
Coat of clay on the wood former - now lets let it dry before I mess it up - hohohohho
-
Looking good.
-
Any spare teeth? Tracy has one with lots of cracks and has been told it will have to come out so I'm looking for a cheaper solution.
-
Have some large pliers if that is any good ::) ::) ::) ::)
The first 2 photos show the cracks after it had dried overnight - last one shows the head after some more clay smoothed into the cracks.
-
Looks like another labour of love or maybe rum!
-
Don't tell anybody Chris, BUT I am really enjoying making the dragons head ( Zak told me to just get on with it ages and ages ago, but I put it off and off) now think I should just have done what he said - but don't let him know that or I will never hear the end of it - hohhohohoh - :o :o :o :o
-
Finish it and the will be the end of it?
-
But what will I end up with - hohoho
-
But what will I end up with - hohoho
A bottle of rum no doubt.
-
Rum - me drink rum, think you are thinking of another person Chris - yohoho
Hair and mouth blocked in with base colour, when dry will coat with pledge and then add the scales and coulor in the eye and add the acrylic teeth.
-
Just as daft this year as last - forgot to add the photo
-
Scares me!
-
Just wait for the eyes :o :o :o :o
-
Scares me!
The head or Martin?
-
Scares me!
The head or Martin?
I think you all decided this morning it was me not the head - just you all wait - hohohoho
More work done on the head - think t needs more green and less white in the eye >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
Those eyes looked scary in Bridlington this morning.
-
Not used to being out in the sunshine/daylight - hohohoho - good to see you both
-
Too much rum me thinks.
-
Not this year until Feb - hohohoho
-
Teeth added and larger green eye section, when dry will outline with black.
-
Looks great!
-
Thanks Chris but it is just like me - needs some more work doing on the head - hohohhoho
-
Head added to the ship
-
Another great piece of 'real modelling' well done.
-
Thanks Chris
-
It certainly looks the part. Excellent model Martin.
-
Looking forward to seeing it.
