Title: Building DDG 139 "NINGBO"
Post by: Haddock on June 10, 2014, 06:57:34 PM
Now the Prince Suvorov is finished, I was wondering what to do next. My last two builds aren't suitable for the September competition because of the period and I don't have anything else that is already well travelled so I don't have a competition entry.I was going to build HMS Queen Elizabeth in 1:350 but I've decided that September is a tall order to do it justice what with the camouflage scheme and all the brass-work, which I haven't ordered yet and is going to set me back £60!. The kit was about the same but I used all my Cropper vouchers ( pressies from the family ). Not only that, Mrs Haddocks annual tour of Great Britain is looming ( a weeks holiday ) and our relations from Gillingham are threatening to visit for a week. On top of which Mrs Haddock has informed me that now the weather is improving, it's time I went out  a bit more and got some fresh air and exercise, nipping down to Croppers in the car with the window down don't count, and we've got school holidays looming so grand-dad duties will be expected. It looks like modelling activities are going to be severely restricted.
I've decided, after much soul-searching to do the "Ningbo" . I'll send some pics later as Ive just opened the box and don't know what I'm in for yet but it looks to be a nice kit.
Haddock.
Here's  a couple to start with.

She pulled em out long ago, didn't half make my eyes water! Still, anyone that can put up with me 47 years deserves the occasional bit of attention, only occasional though, got to get our priorities right.
The kit looks very nice, all the brass you need is in the box with the exception of some inclined ladders with hand-rails but I have some generic ones that should do. Not bad for £24.99 as ship kits go.
I've made the fatal mistake of doing some research, if you look at the two pics enclosed, the anchor windlasses and the hawse pipes that lead the chain into the chain locker don't look big enough, also there are two dark objects to the right of the windlasses, I don't know what they are and whether the chain runs over them or to one side. Looks like a bit of re-engineering and some artistic licence is in order. Perhaps Martin might be able to shed some light.

This is progress so far, not much glued together, just building sub-assemblies ready for painting. It fits together like a dream, much credit to Trumpeter. There's a few shims, mostly hidden, 0.005" and 0.010", then a few swipes with a sanding stick but nothing drastic. I started on Tuesday morning!
I'll dash upstairs, pull it to bits and take some pics of the sub-assemblies.

And here they are in all their horrible glory!
The picture doesn't do justice to some of the fine detail that Trumpeter have achieved on the mouldings.

Beware decorating and holidays!
they seem to ruin the modelling flow.

small parts, small parts, small parts.
All this lot are assemblies, the guns at top left consist of 16 parts.

For a ham-fisted oaf like me , this is quite difficult but if you can't build this, the whole kit is useless! There's more stuff to go on top yet. Phew!

I was quite pleased to get this bit built, I'll be even more pleased when the railings are fitted on the platforms, all seven of 'em.

This might seem a bit brutal but I've chucked the water-line plate away and substituted it with evergreen rod. The holes I've hacked in the deck will let me do a lot of the glueing from below, hopefully, giving a nice neat joint between the deck and the superstructure after painting.
Haddock.
Getting close to being able to slosh some paint on.

Here's some nice shots showing the wake pattern at a fairly low speed. I could use these for the sea.

Ha ha, very funny.
To be serious, they are very clear pictures and if the colour reproduction is anything like, I should be able to get some good colour matches using our favourite paint. The deck colour certainly isn't the same as Trumpeter's spec.

Thought I'd better post something just in case you all thought I'd emigrated (some might say I should).
Sloshing paint on up to now has been what might be called " fun ". Vallejo do Model-air pale grey blue and model colour pale blue grey which are distinctly different and not anything like the photo's posted earlier. Trumpeter call for Neutral grey for the decks which they certainly aren't so I settled for field blue, Tamiya field blue is considerably darker than Model colour field blue, Model colour looks a better match although it doesn't look blue enough till it gets a coat of Klear.
I primed the hull with Vallejo grey primer, mixed 50/50 with Vallejo thinners and misted on several coats, about 5 mins between coats to get good coverage. Then I thinned the field blue and sprayed it on. I ended up with a horrible mess, don't really know why other than there is a build up of semi-dry paint in the nozzle of the bottle,I think this is getting into the paint and won't dilute with thinners. The only option was to strip the lot. Mr Muscle shifted the blue but wouldn't touch most of the primer, I eventually shifted it with Vallejo air-brush cleaner, poured on the model and scrubbed with a soft brush.
All this pantomime meant I had almost run out of brush cleaner so an emergency dash to Boyes was in order, while I was there, I had a look to see if there was anything else colour-wise, I spotted some Game-colour " Wolf grey " ( it doesn't look grey to me )purely by accident, it's the best match yet for the hull and vertical surfaces  so that's what I settled for,you can see the results, though not very well, on the enclosed pics.
What you see isn't glued together, just a load of sub-assemblies with a lot more detail to add. Long way to go yet.
   Haddock.

Not so bad once you get started, not keen on the pictures though, might look better with a coat of matt varnish.

Hi Haddock,

Great work mate! I too use anything that fits the bill as a third hand, so 'good on yer' mate!

Great work as usual, can't wait to see it in the flesh.

Keep that nose to the grindstone, it obviously pays off.
Another win at a show, well done you engineer.

Foredeck with railings added. Now for a gripe. The etched brass for the rest of the kit is quite nice but now I've got most of them fitted, the rails are a bit of a disappointment. In a lot of instances, the run is incomplete so it needs to be completed by grafting on some generic stuff. Based on the principle that any deck or platform should provide some form of protection to stop the crew falling overboard, there are areas where nothing is provided in the kit, so more generic stuff. Finally, the foredeck is nothing like flat, in fact it rises in a gentle curve from around the missile launchers to the point where the anchor chains disappear into the deck where it levels off almost to the horizontal.
It doesn't need a Ph.D in quantum mechanics to realize that something produced straight can't be bent on it's edge to conform to this shape, fortunately, I have some generic curved rails, sadly, they're not the same pattern as the kit items and Iv'e had to use a mix of both, hopefully, it's not too noticeable.
Any half decent CAD system should have been able to sort this out.
             Rant over.
Haddock.

Acting on instructions, I've kept my nose to the grindstone, here's the result, the after deck surrounded by railings. As usual, the kit items won't fit around the stern area so what you see is generic rails, modified (with surgical precision), pity they're a different pattern to the Trumpeter rails but it does look deliberate.
