Modelling Projects / Boulton Paul P.100
« on: September 19, 2021, 04:25:07 PM »
Here's the resin surprise Chris.....
The Unicraft kit of the RAF 'What If' Boulton Paul P.100 ground attack a/c. 22 pieces of resin, 1 clear vac canopy, no instuctions, no decals, no cockpit floor but strangely the seat and console are provided as is a profile of the a/c.
The design can be traced back to a design spec issued, without number, on 7 March 1942 for a 'highly manoeuverable single-seat low attack a/c for employment against military forces on the ground, aircraft, invasion craft and shipping. Initially BP designed the P.99 a twin boom aircraft powered by a rear-mounted Griffon engine driving a six blade contra-rotating propeller. To avoid the propeller when baling out the pilot had a downward escape mechanism where the lower forward fuselage fell away (good luck with that one at low level!!).. The P.100 took these features but replaced the tail-wheeled twin boom with a tricycle undercarriage and canard configuration. Armament was to be large calibre cannons and either bombs or rockets with a desired service entry date of January 1944.
I definitely think this one will be a tail-sitter!!!!

Modelling Projects / German WWII Projected Atomic Bombs
« on: August 10, 2021, 01:37:10 PM »
I bought this set of weapons some time ago with the intention of building them as the occaission arose, the small Uranium bomb will go with the recent Me. P 1100 build. Made by Antares it consists of four resin bomb bodies plus some smaller pieces for fuses, plastic card fins which have to be cut out and a length of wire.
A little background to them as per the insert. By the end of WWII Germany had reached some success in developing nuclear weapons but due to various factors ranging from wrong decisions by it's leaders, inside quarrelling and sabotage the weapons were never used in anger. Four main types were to be develpoed: A small Uranium bomb 'Kleiner Behalter', with and without parachute, SA 4000 isotopic radioactive load with conventional explosives or 'other' substances, the 4 tonne Uranium 'Grosser Behalter and the 4.5 tonne 'Innsbruch' Uranium bomb.
Kora released resin kits of the 4 and 4.5 tonne bombs complete with trailers in the past and these will be used as reference for building my own trailers.

Modelling Projects / Me P.1100
« on: July 12, 2021, 03:09:21 PM »
Following on from the P.1099 the P.1100 had an off-set canopy ala Canberra B (I).8. References show both solid and perspex nosed versions. The Unicraft conversion set I'm using only supplies the off-set canopy and fuselage top and I can't find anything of the correct size in my spares for a clear nose so solid it will be. I started by cutting down the fuselage and got this slightly wrong so have built it back up but a shim will still be needed at the rear. There is no help with cutting lines in the conversion set. The fuselage was taped together after the nose-wheel bay and gun pack were glued together to give some rigidity. Then the conversion was taped on to help in positioning the pilot's seat. So lots of test and dry fitting to come. Not as easy a conversion as it appears at first glance but it will get me working problems out.

Modelling Projects / He 162 Pt.4
« on: June 30, 2021, 11:04:32 AM »
This is the 2012 boxing of the 1965 Lindbergh kit which was issued with 'new decals' and box art which I was kindly given at a Club Meeting a couple of years back. The kit has 18 parts in white plastic, 1 clear canopy, 2 other parts for the stand and no cockpit detail apart from a representation of the ejector seat. Another 'Classic Plastic' which will need some TLC, I'm starting to enjoy these!!!

Modelling Projects / Miles Master III
« on: June 18, 2021, 10:15:10 AM »
After the last build I thought I'd try something a little easier, hmmmm...... This is the 1976 Novo boxing of the original 1963 Frog issue. 41 parts in grey plastic plus a one piece clear canopy. The overall shape is correct apart from the tail and moving surfaces being a bit thick plus in front of the canopy being slightly low. Due to it's age there are lots of ejector pin holes and flash and strangely the seats are of differing shapes. There is no cockpit detail apart from the two floors and seats, so onwards and upwards......

Modelling Projects / Me P.1099
« on: May 18, 2021, 03:55:19 PM »
In 1943 the Messerschmitt design department was working on a further development of the Me 262 known as the Me P.1099 two seat all weather fighter to operate against Allied bomber formations. It utilised the wings and tail surfaces of the Me 262 with a new body and undercarriage which resulted in a change in the centre of gravity so the engines had to be moved back slightly. Further proposals were for an even heavier armed a/c (see my P.1099B build) and an un-armed bomber, P.1100.
The Revell kit, moulded in dark green plastic, dates from 1996 and is of the P.1099A four 30mm cannon version, the biggest omission in the kit is the rearward facing seat for the navigator, this is rectified using the Airwaves etch set. As Zak has kindly given me one of these already it will be finished as an Aufklarer version. Work has started on the cockpit adding the etch, which is nowhere near up to Haddock and Kev's standard.

Modelling Projects / Minenraumer
« on: May 07, 2021, 02:45:52 PM »
And now for something completely different.....
This is the Takom 1/72 scale 1+1 boxing of the Krupp Raumer S and the Alkett Vs.Kfz.617 both of which never got beyond the prototype stage. Both were designed to the same specification for a mine clearing device with the Raumer S weighing in at 130 tons and with a crew of 8. It was anticipated to be ready for testing at Kummersdorf by November 1944 after several delays. The 4 wheels didn't give the 'lane' clearance required by the spec and it is believed that it would have been deployed with a front mounted roller system. The Americans took possession of it when they occupied the Hillersleben test site in 1945.
The Alkett Vs.Kfz.617 was designed with 3 heavy shoed wheels which were to detonate the mines and was steered by power take offs and clutches which operated two chains to turn the rear wheel. Testing was completed in 1942 but the method of steering was found to be unsatisfactory as the rear wheel dug in, the vehicle was slow to handle and it's weight meant it bogged down easily making it an easy target for artillery. The Russians captured it in 1945 and it is now in the Kubinka Museum.
The kit is moulded in grey plastic and comes with a 14 page instruction booklet, an etched brass fret and decals and paint schemes for 3 markings for each vehicle, but we'll see......

Modelling Projects / Avro Vulcan B Mk.2
« on: April 16, 2021, 01:23:24 PM »
This kit has stared down from the 'shelf of shame' for several years and two house moves so it I thought it was time to tackle it (all donations of Valium gratefully accepted). It's from the Airfix Falklands War 25 years set which came with paints, glue and brushes with a catalogue number of A50005 although the instructions give A09002 which would have been a previous release. As I wanted to finish it as XH558 the kit tailpipes were wrong and so have been replaced with a resin set from Freightdog Models of the Olympus 202 tailpipes. I also invested in a set of white metal undercarriage from SMC as I'd put a serious amount of weight in the nose to prevent tail-sitting.
I initially gave up on this for two reasons. 1) I was never happy with my attempts at tidying up the seams, thank goodness for PPP nowadays and 2) I found the wraparound camouflague daunting back then plus the paint wouldn't apply properly. So here we are XXX years down the road filling, sanding priming and hoping for a better outcome.

Modelling Projects / Me P.1107/II
« on: April 01, 2021, 02:30:54 PM »
This is the 1/72nd scale RS Models kit of the Me P.1107 high speed, long range bomber. Whilst the box only says Me P. 1107 it is in fact of the P.1107/II (2). There are two sprues of softish bluey/grey plastic, one clear sprue and a decal sheet with four options, a further release will give four more.
In January 1945 a specification was issued for a fast jet bomber with a crew of our capable of carrying a 4000kg bomb load and a range of 7000km. Messerschmitt proposed the P.1107/1 which had the fuselage from the Me 264, swept wooden wings, four BMW or Heinkel turbojets slung under the wings and a T form tail. The design was later modified to the /II, subject of the kit, which would be of all metal construction and had the engines relocated to the wing roots and a V tail fitted. The prototype of this design was in the early stages of construction when the war ended.
From the instructions you'll see that detail in the cockpit is sparse so I busied it up with etch seat belts and various items from the spares box, with the bomb aiming sight being scratch built.

General Discussion / Quart in a Pint pot!!
« on: April 01, 2021, 01:53:24 PM »
Following on from our recent move here's an example of how to squeeze a quart into a pint pot. We've turned the back bedroom of the cottage into a craft/hobby room but have yet to get fully organised. I've had to downsize as I couldn't fit all but one of my display cabinets anywhere and all my completed models are now in boxes/tubs outside in the sheds (but it won't stop me buying more!!!). The consolations are we have fantastic views across the valley to the Wolds, plenty of natural light and I won't freeze in the winter as there's a radiator in the room. Bliss!!!

Modelling Projects / Matilda
« on: February 17, 2021, 03:11:47 PM »
Whilst Bob is on his Cromwell Crusade I've started the Fujimi 1/76 scale Matilda or to give it it's full name Infantry Tank Mk.II (Matilda Senior). The name Matilda deriving from the Mk.I which was likened to Matilda the Duck, who was Donald Duck's Aunty!! You can tell how long this has been in my stash as the price tag says £1.75p.
Consisting of 59 tan coloured parts, one of which the carpet monster ate, and soft, silver tracks. The markings are for four tanks, 3 in Desert camo; Phantom 42 RTR, Glenorchy 7 RTR and Grampus 4 RTR plus an Austrailian one used in New Guinea. I, however, am going to finish it as Glanton which served with 7 RTR at Arras, which did not carry the usual WD serial. After fitting the sides to the floor I deviated from the instructions and fitted the hull top. This need some adjusting to get it to fit at the front. I'd spent some time researching the tank as profiles show the side skirts above the bogies but the kit has them lower and is also missing the plates on the bogies. I'd found photos which seemed to show them lower so will go with that. As stated above the carpet monster got one of the bogie wheels so I'll find a replacement (or hide the gap!!!).
Once the running gear was in place I started on the 7 piece exhaust system which doesn't quite join together on one side so will use Evergreen strip to fill the gap. Some parts had already been painted using Vallejo Bronze Green Primer which is a match for G4 in the camo scheme and I bought Vallejo US Dark Green as an online source said this is a match for G3.

Modelling Projects / Arado Ar 96
« on: February 02, 2021, 01:11:40 PM »
I started this inbetween waiting for things to set on the Do 215. It's the 1977 Heller release and as such has raised panel lines. The decals are for two Jagdschulen and have yellowed over the years so probably will get replaced. It's a kit of few parts, 30 in total including the clear one piece canopy but you have a choice of engine cowling with or without machine gun and the count could be reduced further as the undercarriage doors were sometimes left off. Extra Tech have produced an etched brass set for the KP kit so I'll see what parts fit or can be adjusted. I'm going through online and my references as I still haven't decided which cowing I'm going to use.

General Discussion / Noises in the dark
« on: January 11, 2021, 04:11:38 PM »
If anyone is wondering what the noises in the dark are it's not MSeas zombies on the rampage or Zaks loft groaning under the weight of all the models!!!
The Swiss AF have 3 Staffel of F-18s flying out of RAF Leeming on night exercises. Apparently they can't do it in Switzerland as the locals don't like them flying at night plus there's the risk of flying into mountains and causing avalanches. So we get to improve our ID of a/c flying in the dark. Bonus?

Modelling Projects / Dornier Do 215B-5
« on: January 04, 2021, 03:24:55 PM »
I bought this kit a few years ago on a visit to Doncaster Air Museum. It's one of a series of releases by ICM of the Do 215. It comes on four light grey sprues, with a lighter fifth for the nightfighter parts, and one clear. There are 148 parts, not all of which are used, including 30 of the 40 m/g magazines, the clear sprue also having redundant parts. Markings are for 3 machines, 1 from NJG1 and 2 from NJG2 with 2 a/c being variants of RLM 74/75/76 and one overall RLM 02 (black). Included in the instructions are cutaways of the a/c which will help in positioning parts. ICM also make this plane in 1/48 so they may have just scaled that down to create this kit I'll check my references.
